An Analytical Revolution in Comparative Politics?
In: Comparative politics, Band 33, Heft 4, S. 475-493
ISSN: 0010-4159
A review essay on books by (1) Robert H. Bates, Avner Greif, Margaret Levi, Jean-Laurent Rosenthal, & Barry R. Weingast, Analytic Narratives (Princeton, NJ: Princeton U Press, 1998); (2) Robert H. Bates, Open-Economy Politics: The Political Economy of the World Coffee Trade (Princeton, NJ: Princeton U Press, 1997); & (3) Lee J. Alston, Thrainn Eggertsson, & Douglass C. North (Eds), Empirical Studies in Institutional Change (Cambridge, UK: Cambridge U Press, 1996). Rational choice & formal theory have gained increasing prominence in comparative politics. Grounded in deductive logic, this analytic turn has often been perceived to be at odds with historical & case-oriented methodologies. The innovation of the three books under review lies in their claim that rigorous analytic techniques are in fact complementary to historical & case-oriented approaches. This review evaluates the strengths & weaknesses of this new approach & assesses its implications for the future of comparative politics. While this new approach falls short of the claims it makes regarding causal validity & generalizability, the authors of these books should be commended for their willingness to engage important criticisms of rational choice theory & their determination to comprehend significant historical episodes. 1 Table. Every profession is occasionally inflicted with challenges which loom large. The challenge may take the form of a book which purports to produce a fundamental revision—in economics these would include Keynes' General Theory, Hicks's Value and Capital, Samuelson's Foundations; or, in the narrower field of international economics, Meade's Trade and Welfare. Or it may be a methodological revolution. Or both. Older members of the profession may try to ignore the challenge. And some of these challenges, ignored, oblige by disappearing. Others have to be faced, sooner or later.
Sobre a compaixão na política: o ponto de vista de Arendt
In: Griot: Revista de Filosofia, Band 20, Heft 2, S. 281-290
When the subject in question is contemporary political thought, Arendt's studies are indispensable. She has become a reference in this subject since the publication of her work 'The Origins of Totalitarianism'. In this article, however, the objective is not to discuss or analyze the concept of this author's policy or necessarily relate it to a particular theory or form of government, but to present in an introductory and elementary way, some aspects of her considerations and positions on the feeling of compassion in politics as understood by her, especially as they appear in her work 'On Revolution'.
Status in world politics
"Rising powers such as Brazil, China, India, Russia and Turkey are increasingly claiming heightened profiles in international politics. Although differing in other respects, rising states have a strong desire for recognition and respect. This pioneering volume on status features contributions which develop propositions on status concerns and illustrate them with case studies and aggregate data analysis. Four cases are examined in depth: the United States (how it accommodates rising powers through hierarchy); Russia (the influence of status concerns on its foreign policy); China (how Beijing signals its status aspirations); and India (which has long sought major power status). The authors analyse status from a variety of theoretical perspectives and tackle questions such as: how do states signal their status claims? How are such signals perceived by the leading states? Will these status concerns lead to conflict or is peaceful adjustment possible?"--
