The value of high-impact practices in undergraduate higher education is well documented. However, very little is known about high-impact practices in Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) programs. The goal of this study was to explore one specific high-impact practice: undergraduate research. Specifically, our study explored the benefits and barriers of undergraduate research for HDFS students as well as the pathways HDFS students use to become involved in undergraduate research. College student identity theory served as a guide for our inquiry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 undergraduate HDFS students, 13 of whom had participated in undergraduate research and 9 who had not. Results revealed three pathways students took to participate in undergraduate research: interest in a specific research topic, connection with the researcher, and preparation for graduate school. Enhanced learning, professional skills, personal growth, and relationships with others were identified as benefits of participation in undergraduate research. Barriers to participation in research included time, lack of awareness, and feelings of fear or intimidation. Specific processes for students and faculty to overcome these barriers are suggested. It is recommended that HDFS faculty and administrators provide multiple pathways and supports for undergraduate students to become involved in research.

The article is devoted to one of the brightest leaders of the city of Barnaul — Vladimir Nikolaevich Bavarin (1939-2003), who made a huge contribution to the development of the city and Barnaul city government. According to many experts, government officials and ordinary citizens, Barnaul was lucky that in the difficult period for the whole country in the 90s and early 2000s, V.N. was at the head of the city management team. Bavarin was a professional, demanding and energetic leader. And his authority, organizational talent, charisma, philanthropy and spiritual qualities contributed to the success of all his activities and relationships both in the team he led, and in effective interaction with representatives of the local community and ordinary citizens. Many events in the socio-economic and political life of Barnaul and the Altai Territory are connected with V.N. Bavarin , and this period is called a whole historical era by many experts. Therefore, analyzing his activities as the head of local self-government, highlighting his role in addressing the development of Barnaul, the authors paid special attention to the image component of this activity, which, in their opinion, significantly affects the positioning of the city and its leadership both in the region and beyond.

Equestrian sports vary in degree of human-animal bond and affiliation, from catch-ride to perceptions of ownership. The Modern Pentathlon has not garnered mainstream media coverage until the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Unfortunately, the rise in conversation and coverage was in response and reaction to poor horsemanship, negative behavior, and aggressive coaching. The events of the 2020 Modern Pentathlon were profound in that they highlighted the extreme juxtaposition of competitions that focus on bonded relationships and catch-riding experiences. The implications are far reaching with increased critique of equestrian sports, transparency about the lack of riding training athletes engaged in prior to competition, and the omission of partnership between horse and rider. The Modern Pentathlon is discussed in the context of the human-equine bond. The standards for equine welfare and wellbeing is considered in regard to the role of the rider in supporting their equine partner in the face of competition, including the implications of emotional distress in reaction to disappointment, and tragedy. Additionally, the role of riders when they are not engaged in the competitive sport (e.g., training and general care of their equine partners). Recommendations for the process and guidelines of the sport are delineated, as well as professional opportunities to strengthen the sport.

Background: An effective communication between the doctor and patient is the foremost factor in establishing good interpersonal relationships. This comprises of both verbal and non-verbal communicators. Particularly in the geriatric population, communication can be hindered due to physiological and psychological deterioration. This study was designed to assess the communication skills of dentistry postgraduate residents (PGRs), with their geriatric patients and provide a baseline for the shortcomings and improvements. Methods: Four postgraduate residents of both genders were selected to take clinical interviews of geriatric patients. Audio-video recordings were made by an expert and reviewed by all researchers. The interviews were transcribed individually and thematic analysis was done. Open and axial coding was done for data organization under themes and subthemes. Results: Data transcription led to initial generation of 61 codes. These codes were categorized under nine codes through axial coding and grouping of similar codes. Persistent overlapping of content was found in data transcription, which may indicate data saturation. Conclusion: Workshop-trained postgraduate students of dentistry demonstrated relatively instrumental communication skills at their clinical encounter with geriatric patients. However, the professional demeanor demands further finesse in soft skills, which can be achieved through its regular practice.

This article argues that there is nothing inherently bad about power over others – it depends on how it is used; that in many ways power over others does not have to be a zero-sum game; and that perspectives and strategies for transforming power from below, vital as they are, should not distract from the potentials for transformations from above. Power over others can be used as power to empower. This requires changes in mindsets and behaviour, with actions like convening, catalysing, facilitating, asking questions, and providing support. Through empowering others, those who are powerful can gain: from better learning and realism, reducing the distortions and delusions of 'all power deceives'; from less stress; from better relationships; and from satisfactions which are fulfilling and enjoyable. It is overdue to pay more attention to uppers – officials, political leaders, priests, teachers, professional service providers, and pervasively to men – to enable them to gain from the win-wins of changing their behaviour, using their power to empower others. One big frontier in development thinking and practice is to evolve and apply a pedagogy for the powerful, for which five practical actions are suggested.

AbstractThis study examines how personality traits and money attitudes influence consumers' decision‐making styles when purchasing investment products in South Africa. A sample of 269 South Africans completed the research questionnaire, which assessed their extraversion, conscientiousness, openness, money power/prestige, money retention/time, money quality, info‐mising, extending, and tax‐free investment purchase decision. Also, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling approaches were used to analyze the survey data.The results suggest that personality traits and money attitudes significantly impact consumer decision‐making regarding tax‐free investment products. However, the relationships between extraversion and money power/prestige and between info‐mising decision styles and tax‐tree investment purchase decisions were found to be negative. Cluster analysis revealed three distinct segments based on the characteristics of respondents and their drive for investment: strong conscientiousness investors, status‐driven investors, and introverted investors. Marketing professionals and investment firms can use the study findings on consumer traits and money attitudes to improve marketing effectiveness in an organisation. Practically, extensive information processing has a fundamental bearing on investment decision‐making in emerging markets. Extraversion and conscientiousness personality traits and money attitudes must be taken into consideration by investment products marketers and practitioners in marketing practice.

Span of control may be a critical structural condition for ethical leadership. According to social learning theory, emulation and vicarious learning processes are mechanisms through which ethical leaders enhance ethical commitment among employees. However, if the span of control (number of employees per manager) is too wide, ethical leadership can be difficult to practice due to a more distant relationship between manager and employees. Using a mixed method design with survey data and interviews, we analyze the relationship between span of control and ethical leadership among doctors in Danish hospitals. Survey results from the study show no statistical association between span of control and clinical directors' self-reported ethical leadership. Interviews with employees and managers support this finding by showing how ethical guidance unfolds through social exchange relationships where employees can act as moral professionals. This suggests that span of control is not a critical structural condition for intending and perceiving a high level of ethical leadership. Span of control is indirectly relevant through the perceived distance between manager and employees. The findings thus enhance our understanding of how ethical leadership takes place in complex, professionalized public organizations. This might inspire managers to lower the organizational power distance and promote professionalism.

What are the crucial ingredients missing in our search for transformative – structural, cultural, political-economic – changes to entrenched systems of oppression right now? Why do so many smart, informed, data-driven efforts fail? This book says what's missing is ART: Action Research for Transformation, a contemporary expression of action research. The book offers surprising, counter-intuitive, and most importantly, experienced-based insights on both what ART is, and how to do it. It reveals pathways to disrupt the academic détentes regarding quantitative versus quantitative, objective versus subjective, macro versus micro, and asks what is knowledge and what is it for. The book offers practical approaches, tools, and case studies, while featuring personal narratives from a wide range of active ARTists about their successes, challenges, doubts, and perhaps most importantly, the joy and value they experience performing ART. Its preponderant thesis is this: the problems of eco-social crisis aren't "out there" so much as within, between and among each one of us, and the types of relationships we create with others. The book is therefore of value to educators and change leaders perhaps especially within our universities' professional schools.

AbstractThe article discusses the results of a research study on social work during COVID-19 in Slovenia. Governmental measures to prevent the spread of the disease have increased the need for assistance to various groups of people but at the same time limited their access to social services. The main research question was to what extent social workers and social services were able to reorganise and adapt to crisis conditions and how this relates to the role of social work in society. Data were collected using mixed methods: online survey and interviews with social workers. Content analysis and selective coding, thematic analysis and univariate descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. The analysis shows that the ability of social workers to respond to the growing and changing needs of people during the pandemic depended on the context in which they worked. Social work was perceived as more effective and responsive in social services where professional autonomy was assured and valued and where horizontal relationships existed between staff and management. The study contributed to a better understanding of the context in which the pandemic occurred and identified some structural barriers to successful social work that are internationally comparable and relevant.

Abstract
Literature suggests health and social care professionals lack the knowledge and confidence required to work effectively with those subject to immigration control. However, thus far few studies have focused on the social work profession. Using quantitative methods, this study explored social work practitioners' knowledge and confidence of the entitlements of adults with 'no recourse to public funds' (NRPF) to adult social care services, through an anonymous, online, national survey (n = 113). Using statistical tests for parametric data, several significant results were found. Training attendance had a statistically significant relationship with knowledge and confidence. Seniority level, years of experience and number of adults with NRPF worked with had statistically significant relationships with confidence but not knowledge. Findings suggest that respondents had adequate knowledge of Care Act assessments. However, confidence was low and knowledge was poor around the entitlements of asylum seekers specifically, access to advocacy and use of human rights assessments. Hence, it is suggested that social work employers should prioritise training on NRPF entitlements, focusing on the areas of poor knowledge found in this study. Moreover, further research with adults with NRPF is needed to better understand their experiences of accessing adult social care.

AbstractThis article examines the early telecommuting discourse of the 1980s and 1990s, understanding it as a pedagogical context for white plasticity, an ecological project in which racial privilege is protected through the transformation of homes and inhabitants. Rationalized initially as a crisis of adjustment, pedagogies of telecommuting were disseminated largely to upper-middle-class white professionals to build a "telecommuting personality," a subjectivity that was also meant to buffer them from the growing precarious nature of jobs. Not content to focus simply on work, however, telecommuting gurus took occasion to urge the enhancement of relationships between partners, families, and communities. The home office was core to this imaginary. Convertible, modular, ergonomic home offices that can be changed to suit the needs of the home's many inhabitants were said to yield more integrated and rounded personalities that would radiate outward, creating emotionally mature children and stronger community bonds. Emerging at a moment when "telecommuting" condensed the political stakes of digital labor, this strand of discourse reveals how working from home was appropriated to ensure the protection of white plasticity—the racialized capability of adaptation that was to be passed as inheritance from parents to progeny.

Employees increasingly claim they do not have enough time to manage the demands of both work and family/life. Workplace flexibility policies have been offered as a key solution to managing these conflicting demands. Yet, employers remain resistant to develop, implement, and endorse these policies. We suggest one avenue to further our understanding is a more holistic look at the connection between availability and use of flexibility, and the workplace context. We specifically examine flexplace. The data derive from 25 in-depth interviews of employees in professional and supervisory positions in the U.S. automotive industry. By examining the variation of flexplace policy availability, we unpack the logics of employee use/non-use of flexplace. We argue that different assumptions of the ideal worker norm undergird flexplace availability, which in turn create different rules of engagement and use. This study offers an analytical model to extend our theorizing on the availability/use gap. Examination of ideal worker norms allows insight into how employees struggle to decipher signals on permissible flexplace use. The findings capture dynamic and interrelated relationships to uncover the constraints of policies and the power of the workplace context.

AbstractThis research shows and analyses a pedagogical experience with ePortfolio into the bridge context between higher education and profession in Latin America, particularly Architectural Design Studio (ADS). The objective was to reveal the impacts of ePortfolio use as a tool of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on the training process to enhance Networked Learning Principles (NLP) into the particular architectural pedagogy. The research had a descriptive methodology with a qualitative approach through a perception survey applied to a sample of students from eight cohorts of the same training cycle (second year) in a ADS across years 2015–2018. The study kept its design and implementation fidelity stable during this time, allowing data from eight instances. The results allow observing relationships between the training process dimensions and the NLP, with indicators to improve this relationship, throughout to observe transformations linked to the ePortfolio conception, implementation and projection. The conclusions are related to the ePortfolio capacity to close strategic gaps in the training learning process to design, organise and provide feedback to improve the NLP, creating training strategies that promote students' autonomous learning, connections, identities, needs, aspirations and professional objectives.

This article considers a culturally marginalised yet consequential gendered discourse that positions women as "wife" alongside their role as mother in working women's talk about divisions of care on Britain's largest parenting site, Mumsnet. Unlike most previous research on Mumsnet that has focused on the construction and partial resistance of normative ideas of motherhood, this paper suggests that the increasingly politicised site is a space where a discourse of wifehood is drawn upon to account to some degree for experiences of domestic inequality. Using a critical discursive psychological approach to data from 14 online discussion threads posted on Mumsnet, the paper identifies two dominant, complementary constructions through which posters frame divisions of care. These are the position of the "facilitating wife", enabling their male partners' careers by taking on the bulk of domestic responsibility to the detriment of their own professional achievement and mental wellbeing; and the construction of partners as "feckless manchildren", as an attempt to manage dissonances with their positioning as "wife" and related overburdening. I conclude that the relationships women form in the Mumsnet space allow them to articulate dissonant views and feelings about their co-existing domestic roles of wife and mother and associated divisions of care.

AbstractThe aim is to describe parents' worries about their family's life situation during pregnancy and when their children are very young. The aim is to form a better understanding of parental worries for being able to better help them in child and family services. Previous research indicates that parental worries and concerns are not always addressed. Data consisted of parents' open answers (N  = 98) to questionnaires carried out at two time points: during pregnancy and the early childhood of the family's children. The data were analyzed by inductive content analysis. The results show that families had six different types of worries. The parents described worries concerning health, parental challenges, relationships, sufficiency of resources, standard of living, and difficulties in obtaining support. Challenges related to family life or parenthood could emerge suddenly or develop slowly and cumulate. Either kinds of challenges were often difficult to solve without outside assistance. Identifying and intervening in parental worries sufficiently early is crucial and effective. It is difficult for the professionals who work with families to form a comprehensive perception of children's and family's life situation without systematic evaluation and discussions on parental worries.
