'Seit Mitte der 50er Jahre ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, daß eine Ehe vor dem Scheidungsrichter endet, beständig angewachsen. Mit Hilfe des 'Familiensurveys' des Deutschen Jugendinstitutes, einer Befragung von rund 6600 Personen aus den alten Bundesländern, die zum Befragungszeitpunkt (1988) in einer Erstehe lebten oder deren erste Ehe geschieden wurde, konnten einige zentrale Thesen zur 'sozialen Vererbung' des Scheidungsrisikos (Transmissionseffekt) empirisch überprüft werden. Zunächst einmal stellt sich die Frage, durch welche Faktoren der bemerkenswerte Aufwärtstrend des Ehescheidungsrisikos erklärbar ist. Eine plausible Erklärung lautet, daß der sozialdemographische Wandel quasi als Initialzündung einen selbsttragenden Prozeß der Scheidungsdynamik ausgelöst hat. Nach der These der 'Scheidungsspirale' sind eine Reihe von Feedback- oder 'Schneeballeffekten' identifizierbar, durch die sich Scheidungsrisiken, sofern ein gewisser Schwellenwert überschritten wird, positiv selbst verstärken.' Teleworking has become a popular work arrangement in many developed countries. Although there are heated public debates over the benefits of teleworking, empirical evidence on the causal relationship between teleworking and health is still rare. Using panel data from the German BAuA Working Time Survey (2015, 2017, and 2019), the authors investigated the effects of teleworking on health and well-being. The authors applied an innovative research design to underscore different sources of selection. Overall, no concrete evidence was found for the positive effect of teleworking on workers' self-reported health, quality of sleep, and psychosomatic conditions. The ostensible better health outcomes among teleworkers could be partially explained by the positive selection on both prior levels and prior trajectories of health into teleworking. Moreover, the health impacts of telework were contingent on workers' gender and parenthood status and the intensity of teleworking. These findings indicate that the positive association between teleworking and health appears to reflect selection bias rather than a causal relationship in Germany before the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Die weit verbreitete Probeehe-These besagt, dass eine voreheliche Lebensgemeinschaft die Scheidungsrate einer nachfolgenden Ehe senken sollte. In einem in dieser Zeitschrift erschienenen Artikel (Brüderl, Diekmann und Engelhardt 1997) haben wir gezeigt, dass dies tatsächlich zutrifft. Yasemin Niephaus (1999) fand demgegenüber, dass eine voreheliche Lebensgemeinschaft keinen Einfluss auf die Scheidungsrate hat. Wir zeigen im Folgenden, dass Niephaus' Ergebnis auf einer Fehlspezifikation beruht. Mit einem korrekt spezifizierten Modell können wir erneut die Probeehe-These bestätigen." (Autorenreferat)

"In dieser Arbeit gehen wir der Frage nach, ob voreheliches Zusammenleben von späteren Ehepartnern das Scheidungsrisiko beeinflußt. Die landläufige These hierzu ist, daß eine "Probeehe" das Scheidungsrisiko senken sollte. Zur Überprüfung dieser Hypothese verwenden wir die Daten des westdeutschen Familiensurveys von 1988. Es zeigt sich, daß - entgegen der Probeehe-These - Ehen mit vorgeschalteter nichtehelicher Lebensgemeinschaft ein höheres Scheidungsrisiko haben. Weitere, differenziertere Analysen zeigen aber, daß dieses Resultat auf einen Selbstselektions-Effekt zurückzuführen ist: Insbesondere solche Personen, die eine geringe Eheorientierung aufweisen, gehen eine Probeehe ein. Heiraten sie dennoch, so ist die Ehe trotz der Probeehe-Phase mit einer höheren Scheidungswahrscheinlichkeit belastet. Mittels geeigneter statistischer Verfahren, die die Selbstselektion kontrollieren, können wir schließlich zeigen, daß eine Probeehe tatsächlich das Scheidungsrisiko senkt." (Autorenreferat)

The central aim of many studies in population research and demography is to explain cause-effect relationships among variables or events. For decades, population scientists have concentrated their efforts on estimating the 'causes of effects' by applying standard cross-sectional and dynamic regression techniques, with regression coefficients routinely being understood as estimates of causal effects. The standard approach to infer the 'effects of causes' in natural sciences and in psychology is to conduct randomized experiments. In population studies, experimental designs are generally infeasible. In population studies, most research is based on non-experimental designs (observational or survey designs) and rarely on quasi experiments or natural experiments. Using non-experimental designs to infer causal relationships—i.e. relationships that can ultimately inform policies or interventions—is a complex undertaking. Specifically, treatment effects can be inferred from non-experimental data with a counterfactual approach. In this counterfactual perspective, causal effects are defined as the difference between the potential outcome irrespective of whether or not an individual had received a certain treatment (or experienced a certain cause). The counterfactual approach to estimate effects of causes from quasi-experimental data or from observational studies was first proposed by Rubin in 1974 and further developed by James Heckman and others. This book presents both theoretical contributions and empirical applications of the counterfactual approach to causal inference.

"In OECD countries, the cross-country correlation between the total fertility rate and the female labour force participation rate turned from a negative value before the 1980s to a positive value thereafter. Based on pooled time-series analysis, the literature seems to agree that this change is due to unmeasured country and time heterogeneity with respect to female employment. However, the determinants of this heterogeneity remain unclear. Using data of 16 European countries from 1960-2005, the author estimates pooled time-series models of fertility and female labor force participation by applying Prais-Winsten regressions with fixed country and time effects and investigate the changing effect of female labor participation for a set of labor market, educational and demographic variables and indicators of social policy. The empirical findings reveal that the change in the correlation seems to be due to the increasing proportion of females employed part-time, increasing educational attainment of females, increasing age at first birth and increasing gross enrollment ratio of children in pre-primary education." In dieser Studie untersuchen wir, ob Fertilität am Arbeitsplatz "ansteckend" ist: Erhöht sich die Neigung, erstmalig schwanger zu werden, nachdem eine Kollegin ein Kind zur Welt gebracht hat? Zur dieser Frage unterscheiden wir auf Basis der Analytischen Soziologie unterschiedliche Mechanismen, die einen solchen Interaktionseffekt vermitteln können. Für die empirische Analyse verwenden wir "Linked Employer-Employee" Daten (1993-2007) der Bundesagentur für Arbeit (N=42.394 Frauen in 7.560 Betrieben). Diskrete Ratenmodelle zeigen einen deutlichen Ansteckungseffekt im Jahr nach einem Geburtsereignis einer Kollegin. In diesem Zeitraum ist die Neigung für eine Schwangerschaft nahezu doppelt so hoch. Unsere Ergebnisse sprechen dafür, dass die Ansteckung von Fertilität am Arbeitsplatz sowohl bedürfnis- als auch für überzeugungsvermittelt verläuft. Dabei stärkt die Interaktion mit schwangeren Kolleginnen und/oder ihren Neugeborenen sowohl den Kinderwunsch selbst als auch das Selbstvertrauen bei bestehendem Kinderwunsch.

"In this paper we investigate the effects of demographic, economic and labour-market structures on labour-force participation and transition to retirement for older males in eleven European countries. Theoretically, our analysis is guided by
considerations of intragenerational competition and intergenerational substitution. Following Easterlin's hypothesis that intragenerational competition rises with cohort size, we assume a negative effect of cohort size on labour-force participation and a positive effect on early retirement. Taking into account that different cohorts are substitutes at least to a certain extent, we assume that the probability for early
retirement will be reduced by a high intergenerational exchange ratio in favour of
older workers. Thus, labour-force participation is both influenced by the populations' age structure when entering the labour-force and during the career. Moreover, low shares of graduates in older cohorts are expected to reduce older workers' chances of being employed. Next to demographic structures, general economic conditions like
GDP per capita and its development during working life force or hamper employment of older workers. Additionally, labour-market structures like unemployment rates, the extent of part-time work or the amount of service jobs influence individual labourforce participation and transition to retirement. To test these hypotheses, we use
merged data from the first two waves of SHARE and macro-level indicators. We estimate a two-level random-incept logit-model which allows to determine the share of variance in international late careers that can be attributed to country‐specific factors and to quantify the relative impact of specific socio-demographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our results imply that cross-national variation in labour-force
participation is mainly driven by the instance of long-term unemployment and the share of highly educated older men. While our analyses confirm the hypothesis on intragenerational competition, we do not find evidence for intergenerational
competition forcing early retirement." (author's abstract)
