Initiated for several decades, the development of the digital technology mark by its deep stamp the minds and the body of our contemporary society. More than a simple social phenomenon, it seems to be generaly agreed that we assist today at a true « anthropological mutation ». Nevertheless, while the analyses of the links between technology and society have been characterized for a long time by some deterministic prospects, we propose to explore in this thesis the dynamic relations which make that a technic is eminently social, and that a society is intrinsically technic. Adhering to a comprehensive approach, this research seeks to highlight the significations and the meaning systems related to the use of digital media tools, at a macro-social and a micro-social scale, to explain causally the importance we ascribed to this specific category of objects. The dynamics at work, both at an individual or collective level, are examinated in a socio-logical way, alternately with an historical, philosophical, economical, political, or socio-cultural point of view. As artefacts-symbols of our present day societies – total social object –, the digital media are the tools upon which we organize the contemporaneity of our relationship with the world : we regard them as a sociological prism from which it possible to grasp the connected society. ; Initié depuis plusieurs décennies, le développement des techniques numériques marque de son empreinte profonde les esprits et les corps de nos sociétés contemporaines. This article explores the media narratives of economic adjustment policies on the welfare state in the Spanish context. The objective is to detect the discursive strategies present in the informative story with which the public managers inform about their decisions to the citizenship that has to assume them. Our research question is whether in that mediatization there are inhibiting elements of conflict −social conflict that could be expected as a consequence of imposed austerity. We work on the informative speech of newspapers and television news that cover public appearances of members of the government of Spain. ; Este artículo indaga en las narrativas mediáticas de las políticas de ajuste económico sobre el Estado del bienestar en el contexto español. El objetivo es detectar las estrategias discursivas presentes en el relato informativo con el cual los gestores públicos informan sobre sus decisiones a la ciudadanía que las ha de asumir. La pregunta de investigación que nos guía es si en esa mediatización se dan elementos inhibidores del conflicto −conflicto social que pudiera esperarse como consecuencia de la austeridad impuesta. Social scientists and international relations scholars are increasingly analyzing data collected from Twitter or Facebook to examine political processes in which social media are used. The sheer amount of web 2.0 data and its heterogeneity (including text, photos, and videos), however, pose challenges which analysts frequently seek to overcome through a mixed method approach relying on both quantitative and qualitative methods. This article discusses the advantages and limits of using mixed methods for analyzing social media. We show how the shortcomings of quantitative methods such as sentiment analysis and data mining can be remediated by qualitative content methods in a study of the Twitter activity of private military and security companies (PMSCs).

Michael Burawoy's public sociology presents a vision of engaged and political sociology that stands for critical debate and social justice. The article will consider public sociology in light of Zygmunt Bauman's social thought, one of the most acclaimed sociologists whose writings transcend academic readership. It will identify the similarities and diff erences concerning their understanding of contemporary society and sociology's tasks, as well as its shortcomings, which will sediment public sociology's cause. The article will discuss Burawoy's conception of public sociology through Bauman's views on the tasks of sociology, which will be seen as illuminating for both political and ethical reasons. The aim of the paper is to interpret public sociology from the point of view of Bauman's writings on liquid modernity, and thereby increase its awareness of the ways in which contemporary societies call for sociological engagement. It will be argued that ethics and dialogue are equally important to politics for public sociology.

For the 2000 election campaign, the liberals tried to establish a completely new image of their party. Instead of being just the junior partner of a government, they tried to establish their own profile. Their campaign had three main goals: independence from other parties; a party "for everybody"; no government without the liberals. The political communication had an uncommon style, based mainly on media, thereby presenting the new, dynamic image of the party. It is suggested that this strategy failed because the party overdid the media presence as a 'fun party,' & because there was a goal conflict between liberal positions & attraction for all. Spirited Histories combines ethnography with critical theory to provide a sophisticated exploration of the intersection of haunting and the paranormal with technology, media, and history. Retrieving the past in places of trauma and death can take on many facets. One of these is an attention to hauntings, ghosts, and absences that go with the collective experience of loss and disappearance. People memorialize the dead and their stories in myriad ways. But what about the untold stories, or the forgotten, unnamed? This book explores the ways groups of Chilean paranormal investigators and ghost tour operators produce alternate histories using paranormal machinery, rather than simply theatricalizing pain. It offers a look at technologies, machines, and apparatuses - themselves imbued with a long history of supernatural and scientific expectations - and a social analysis of how certain groups of people marshal the voices of the dead to generate particular micro-histories. This fascinating volume will be of interest to a range of disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, history, religious studies, and scholars of technology and new media.

AbstractCongregations depend on their members for their success and survival. Yet there is a lack of research examining congregational retention or exit. Social networks are key to understanding religious group dynamics including retention; however, research on religious communities using network analysis is limited. We use Amish directories to compile longitudinal census data on intracongregational familial ties in our case study. We theorize and find that cohesion is inversely related to congregational size and positively related to retention. We find that splitting congregations reduces cohesion when members central to the network are removed even when congregational size is reduced. The findings may be particularly relevant for understanding retention and group dynamics in small congregations and ethnic congregations in which extended family ties more commonly form the membership base. The results demonstrate the utility of using social network analysis methods to test theoretical predictions drawn from the sociology of religion literature.

We introduce some methodological proposals to study journalistic cultures, and we analyze the questions asked to the journalists in the Worlds of Journalism Study (2012-2015); to articulate a socio-critical perspective to investigate journalistic cultures. From the levels proposed by Hanitzsch (2007): cognitive, performative and evaluative; and with the intention of transcending the perspective they provide and which limits the study of journalistic cultures to the search for previously defined professional profiles, instead of deepening the factors that define journalistic cultures (Martínez Nicolás, 2015); we propose five dimensions of analysis to investigate journalistic cultures: 1) Sociolabor conditions of journalists; 2) Modes of production and work methodologies; 3) The relationship between the media with companies and government; 4) Functions of journalistic information in the life of citizens; 5) Use of the journalistic information by citinzery. ; Introducimos algunas propuestas metodológicas para estudiar las culturas periodísticas, y analizamos las preguntas realizadas a los periodistas en el Worlds of Journalism Study (2012-2015); para, a continuación, articular una perspectiva socio-crítica para investigar las culturas periodísticas. Breakdance, DJ-ing, Rap, Graffiti: Die "vier Elemente" der HipHop-Kultur haben sich in den letzten 20 Jahren vom afroamerikanischen Kontext aus weltweit verbreitet. Heute stellt HipHop eine vielseitige Arena der Popkultur dar - ein Medium kultureller Artikulation im jugendlichen Alltag, aber auch ein Produkt der Kulturindustrie und ein "Diskursuniversum" mit typischen Ausdrucksformen in Sprache, Bild und Bewegung. Mit diesem Band liegt die erste umfangreiche Textsammlung über HipHop im deutschsprachigen Raum vor. Beiträge aus Cultural Studies, Ethnologie, Soziolinguistik, Pädagogik und anderen Disziplinen werden mit Essays von Szene-Autoren zusammengeführt.
