This case study explores a social science approach to qualitative textual analysis. It introduces readers to textual analysis, discourse analysis, data collection, coding, analysis, and presentation of findings for publication. The case study of U.S. news media coverage of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 is an entry point for a conversation about textual analysis conducted within the parameters of the social sciences. It demonstrates the technique of analytic induction for analyzing texts and a corresponding interpretive practice related to poststructural discourse analysis for tethering textual analyses to broader cultural discourses.

The cult of St James within the Order of St John was evident throughout its stay in Malta in the architectural fabric it left behind, particularly the fortified land-front of the city of Valletta, as well as in other notable buildings, namely the Auberge of Castile, León and Portugal, and its church of St James. While its architectural aspects have withstood the test of time, other social aspects of the cult of Santiago in Malta are evident through the religious art in the Conventual Church of the Order in Valletta, today St John's co-cathedral, but also through religious rituals held on the island during the stay of the knights. This reflected a local cult which shows hints of being present also before the arrival of the Hospitaller Order to the Maltese shores. ; : El culto a Santiago en el seno de la Orden de San Juan quedó patente a lo largo de su estancia en Malta en el tejido arquitectónico que dejó tras de sí, en particular en la fachada fortificada de la ciudad de La Valeta, así como en otros edificios notables, a saber, el Albergue de Castilla, León y Portugal, y su iglesia de Santiago. Mientras que sus aspectos arquitectónicos han resistido la prueba del tiempo, otros aspectos sociales del culto a Santiago en Malta son evidentes a través del arte religioso en la Iglesia Conventual de la Orden en La Valeta, hoy con-catedral de San Juan, pero también a través de los rituales religiosos celebrados en la isla durante la estancia de los caballeros. Esto refleja un culto local que muestra indicios de estar presente incluso antes de la llegada de la Orden Hospitalaria a las costas maltesas.

Sport events are used more and more in both developing and developed contexts to promote development (especially economic growth), enhance social cohesion and healthy lifestyles and profile locations as tourist destinations. Associated with an increased number of sport events and academic interest is greater focus on legacies, that is, what are the likely impacts (both positive and negative) of sport events. There are a range of legacies associated with sport events that include economic, social, political, tourism, infrastructural and sport impacts. There is a tendency to focus on the economic and infrastructural impacts and social legacies are often neglected. This is particularly the case the bigger the sport events. Furthermore, there is increased debate in the literature about what constitutes a sport event legacy and how can they be encouraged and assessed. In terms of the latter, the importance of undertaking research on legacy impacts is highlighted and methodological approaches are debated. This article draws on the growing body of literature on sport events and legacies to examine social aspects, an under-researched component of legacy research, in relation to key debates and issues as well as methodological aspects. Given the recent successful hosting of Africa?s first mega-event, the 2010 F?d?ration of International Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, the article reflects on the social legacies associated with this event.

This book is a guide into the increasingly interconnected domains of digital technology and society. It presents extensive reviews into several domains affected by digital technology and media, such as health, politics, and interpersonal relationships, which are developed from the findings of the "Ways of Being in a Digital Age" project commissioned by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The book includes interdisciplinary, comprehensive reviews on central aspects of the current digital age. Aside from a look into the methodology of the ESRC project, the book contains chapters discussing individual and relational domains to more organizational, community, and citizenship domains, and then to more societal and governance domains.

L'histoire des idées politiques a désormais une longue carrière; au contraire de l'histoire dite des institutions, qui, à l'aide de sources administratives, décrit la machine de l'État et parfois son fonctionnement, cadre quotidien de la vie des hommes, elle prétend atteindre aux cadres de la pensée, et ne parvient, je le crains, dans les meilleurs cas, qu'à analyser les spéculations de quelques lettrés et savants de cabinet, monde de beaux esprits, qui constituent l'une des branches de l'histoire littéraire. La civilisation byzantine, dans sa période de croissance, celle qui vivait du souvenir des maîtres antiques, latins et grecs, du IVe au VIe siècle, a connu ce genre littéraire, et ce fut l'un de ses aspects les moins originaux.

AbstractTeam reasoning is the idea that we can think as a 'we' and this can solve some coordination dilemmas, such as Hi-Lo. However, team reasoning can only solve the dilemmas it is intended to solve if the conditions for team reasoning warrant the belief that others will also perform team reasoning and these conditions cannot render team reasoning otiose. In this paper, I will supplement the theory of team reasoning by explaining how agency transformation also involves a change in the normative attitude. To do this, I will use the theory of affordances, which is the idea that the environment provides ways to interact with it. I will argue that when a person perceives as a group member, she associates herself and the other members with the group's mosaic of affordances. This triggers a feeling of joint ownership of the agency. It is the feeling that it is up to us to deal with the situation, so we feel entitled to demand each other to cooperate. It warrants the belief that others are team-reasoners without rendering team reasoning otiose. This means that the agency transformation (fromItowe) involves a change in the normative attitude.
