Examining the changes in society in the United States, Beth Rubin explains how the current era differs fundamentally from the post-World War Two period; how and why that change has occurred; and what its meaning is to everyday life. She traces the changes from a domestic to a global economy, the transformation of the workplace, and the impact that these changes have had on how other people are experiencing social aspects of their lives: their families and interpersonal relations, their communities and their experience of the culture of mass society

The Dark Side of Social Media: Psychological, Managerial, and Societal Perspectives examines how social media can negatively affect our lives. The book tackles issues related to social media such as emotional and mental health, shortened attention spans, selective self-presentation and narcissism, the declining quality of interpersonal relationships, privacy and security, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, misinformation and online deception, and negative peer effects. It goes on to discuss social media and companies (loss of power, challenging control mechanisms) and societies as a whole (fake news, chatbots, changes in the workplace). The Dark Side of Social Media: Psychological, Managerial, and Societal Perspectives empowers readers to have a more holistic understanding of the consequences of utilizing social media. It does not necessarily argue that social media is a bad development, but rather serves to complement the numerous empirical findings on the "bright side" of social media with a cautionary view on the negative developments

During the first half of the 19th century, social public care was organized along two directions: commitment of professional beggars, without a family, in specialized institutions, and home assistance of beggars with families (by a monthly pension and by an annual change of clothes). The article relies on archive documents, such as potential beneficiaries' help requests, administrative documents issued by the authorities, lists of help beneficiaries, inquiries, etc. It presents aspects related to the practical functioning of the social assistance: types of beneficiaries, pension distribution procedures, abuses and frauds. The legal limitations of the administrative rigidity of the pension system were strictly defined, even before the assessment of the real needs in society. This is the reason the efficiency of the pension system was lower than expected both by the authorities and the beneficiaries.

Using coordinated nineteenth-century birth, marriage, and death records for Catholics and Jews in Altdorf, this analysis investigates the relation between social, economic, and cultural factors and demographic behavior. The constraints of the village economy severely restricted the number of people who could make a livelihood in the village. Yet, improved adult mortality and high fertility created a potential population surplus. The Catholics-mostly farmers and craftsmen-responded not with a restriction of fertility but with the heavy out-migration of young people. Jews-primarily tradesmen and cattle dealers- exhibited mortality consistently lower than that of Catholics; Jewish fertility was initially high, but showed clear signs of limitation by 1870-1899. By midcentury, almost all the Jewish children born in the village who survived to adulthood had left Altdorf, as had a large proportion of their parents. The more dramatic response of the village's Jews is seen as a reaction both to their declining econom ic role in Altdorf and to their increasing assumption of more modern, urban values and life styles. Catholic response thus served to preserve the traditional village life styles whereas the Jewish response accelerated their modernization.

In the field of district heating the process of social innovation has been initiated for the betterment of environmental conditionsand contributes to the improvement of the quality of life at the given locations and to the general well-being of the local community. The aim of this study is to present a good practice of social innovation. The technological development and the implementation of professional innovations at the Miskolc District Heating Ltd. established an operational environment of district heat production that, via the model of optimal heat source mix, can serve as an example for the planning of heat-source portfolios at the Hungarian district heating systems. The study shows how it contributes to the accomplishment of the European and Hungarian energy strategy. It also focuses on the use of eco-label and good examples of using renewable energy sources in district heating. The results of the study are applied to prepare a detailed map of the element of social innovation networks in the field of district heating and to determine the indicator groups with a special focus on its financing and economy.
