In: Law and politics: continental perspectives
"In every western democracy today, inheritances have a very profound influence on people's lives. This motivates renewed scholarship on inheritance law by philosophy and the legal sciences. The present volume aims to contribute to some ongoing areas of inquiry while also filling some gaps in research. It is organised in a highly interdisciplinary way. In the sixteen chapters of the book, written by outstanding philosophers and legal scholars, the following questions, among others, are discussed. What is the nature of the right to bequeath? What are the social functions of bequest and inheritance? What arguments concerning justice have philosophers and legal scholars advanced in favour or against practices of bequest and inheritance? How should we think about taxing the wealth transfers that occur in bequest and inheritance? In discussing these questions, the authors break new ground and offer much-needed insight into a number of related domains, such as the philosophy of law, legal theory, general and applied ethics, social and political philosophy, theories of justice and the history of legal, political and economic thought. Engaging the philosophy of law, legal theory, general and applied ethics, social and political philosophy, theories of justice and the history of legal, political and economic thought, this book will be of great interest to scholars in these areas as well as policy makers"--
Within computational chemistry, the NWChem package has arguably been the de facto standard for running high-accuracy numerical simulations on the most powerful supercomputers. In order to better address the challenges presented by emerging exascale architectures, the decision has been made to rewrite NWChem. Design of the resulting package, NWChemEx, has been driven by exascale computing; however, significant additional design considerations have arisen from the team's involvement with the Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI). MolSSI is a National Science Foundation initiative focused on establishing coding and data standards for the computational chemistry community. As a result, NWChemEx is built upon a general computational chemistry framework called the simulation development environment (SDE) that is designed with a focus on extensibility and interoperability. The present manuscript describes the modular approach of the SDE and how it has been used to implement the self-consistent field algorithm within NWChemEx. ; Public domain authored by a U.S. government employee

Molenberghs, Verbeke, and Demetrio (2007) and Molenberghs et al. (2010) proposed a general framework to model hierarchical data subject to within-unit correlation and/or overdispersion. The framework extends classical overdispersion models as well as generalized linear mixed models. Subsequentwork has examined various aspects that lead to the formulation of several extensions. A unified treatment of the model framework and key extensions is provided. Particular extensions discussed are: explicit calculation of correlation and other moment-based functions, joint modelling of several hierarchical sequences, versions with direct marginally interpretable parameters, zero-inflation in the count case, and influence diagnostics. The basic models and several extensions are illustrated using a set of key examples, one per data type (count, binary, multinomial, ordinal, and time-to-event). ; Financial support from the IAP research network #P7/06 of the Belgian Government (Belgian Science Policy) is gratefully acknowledged. This work was partially supported by CNPq, a Brazilian science funding agency.

Qualitative frameworks, especially those based on the logical discrete formalism, are increasingly used to model regulatory and signalling networks. A major advantage of these frameworks is that they do not require precise quantitative data, and that they are well-suited for studies of large networks. While numerous groups have developed specific computational tools that provide original methods to analyse qualitative models, a standard format to exchange qualitative models has been missing. ; Nebraska NASA Space Grant Consortium grant: ("Technology for collaborative biomedical research"), National Institutes of Health grant support: (#5R01DA030962), US National Institute of General Medical Sciences support: (#GM070923), Swiss Federal Government through the Federal Office of Education Science and Innovation (SERI) and the European Commission FP6 project ENFIN (Experimental Network for Functional INtegration–LSHG-CT-2005-518254), FCT grant: (Pest-OE/EEI/LA002), , Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, Germany) as part of the Virtual Liver Network grants : (0315756, 0315744), EMBL-EBI.

; The article discusses the methodological problems of studying the interaction between government and society in the development of General education in Russia in the XIX early XX century. The solution of these problems occupied a significant place in the works of Russian scientists of the past, yet little involved in historical and pedagogical turnover. However, a huge number of such studies requires proper methodological orientation. The article shows that the current problem can be solved with the active use of the achievements of representatives of other Sciences, in particular of legal science.

This paper addresses how measurements of cognitive skill differ based on survey mode, from a face-to-face interview to a self-completed survey, using the Wordsum vocabulary test found in the General Social Survey. The Wordsum acts as a proxy for general cognitive skill, and it has been used to predict a variety of political variables. Therefore, knowing differences in cognitive skill by mode are important for political science research because of the proliferation of self-completed Internet surveys. I leverage a large-scale mode experiment that randomizes a general population sample into a face-to-face or self-completed interview. Results show that historically easy questions are more likely to yield correct answers in the face-to-face treatment, but modest-to-difficult test questions have a higher rate of correct answers in the self-completed treatment (marginal distributions). A cognitive skill scale using item response theory, however, does not differ by mode because the ordering of ideal points does not change from a face-to-face interview to a self-completed survey. When applying the scale to a well-established model of party identification, I show no difference by mode, suggesting that a transition from face-to-face interviews to self-completed surveys may not alter conclusion drawn from models that use the Wordsum test.
