Purpose
Meals on Wheel Central Texas (MOWCTX) provides meals to more than 5,000 home-bound older adults in the Austin area every weekday. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of client-volunteer interactions to assess the social benefits clients receive and ascertain if and how loneliness and social isolation are addressed.


Design/methodology/approach
Observations of volunteer-client interactions, interviews with clients and surveys of clients were conducted to gain insight into clients' experiences with MOWCTX services.


Findings
Qualitative analysis of observation and interview data revealed four non-tangible benefits clients received from MOWCTX: reduced physical risks when mobility issues are present, a daily safety check, opportunities for social contact and increased ability to maintain independence. Survey results supported these conclusions.


Originality/value
This research examines the impact of volunteer-client relationships on the experience of loneliness and social isolation.

This study aimed to keep the quality of judges' decisions and to reduce the burden of cases that accumulate in the courts. This research was conducted through observation, interviews, and literature study at the mediation center in the Sasak community with a qualitative analysis, using a case and statute approach. It was found that based on the Regional Regulation Number 9 of 2018, the mediation center and the court can be integrated institutionally through several concepts: first, making the mediation center as a filtering instrument of dispute so that the court ultimately only functions as a final settlement; second, making the executive power on the peace agreement produced by the mediation center in a peace deed (vandading deed); third, the Sasak community's control-management procedure based on local laws in the form of the Mediation Center Institution is an alternative to resolve local community disputes.

Indonesia is a country that implements a democratic political system. As such, the involvement of society in the political process becomes very important. The purpose of this article is to research the democracy and local political participation in Sumedang. The study uses qualitative methods with primary data obtained from field observations and direct interviews of several informants. Additionally, the researchers use secondary data as a complement to the analysis. The results of this study indicate that the community at the local level truly understands the importance of political participation. However, due to disappointment in government performance, a part of the community has become discouraged from participating in the political process conducted by local governments. Several factors hinder efforts to encourage political participation. These include limited access to political aspirations that are still rare and the process of political education that is still low.

This study discusses novel ecranization study to the film Melbourne Rewind. In this study that every ecranization or change of literary works such as novels that turn into films there is a reduction, changes in variations and additions that are like words in novel literary works, that writing becomes a form of moving images in a film consisting of plot, characters and setting. The purpose of this study is to describe the subtraction, change of variations and additions contained in the novel to the film Melbourne Rewind. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method. The approach used is the ecranization approach. Data were collected by reading, recording and analyzing documents from novels to films. The results of this study indicate that in the study of ecranization from novels to films, there are changes, additions and subtractions consisting of plot, setting and characters.

AbstractDrawing on in‐depth qualitative interviews with 15 people who have learning disabilities, brain injuries, neurodiversity, or mental health conditions accused of a crime in Scotland, this article offers substantive and methodological insights to unpacking perceptions of justice accessibility. We explore barriers to participation in pretrial justice processes for disabled accused people, demonstrating that disabled people are systematically denied a voice and disadvantaged by poor identification and recognition of impairment, insufficient supports or adjustments, and inaccessible information. We discuss participants' accounts of feeling excluded from, and intimidated by, systems and decisions that are not routinely explained in accessible terms, which, in turn, adversely impacts access to justice and perceptions of fairness. Informed by criminology and disability studies, we argue that the failure of criminal justice systems and practices to acknowledge disability as an equality issue creates disabling barriers that serve to further marginalise disabled people within justice settings.

The Covid-19 era was the beginning of a new era in increasing digitalization. With the increase of digital users, it is seen that digital businesses also increase. Nowadays, as we witness this radical change in consumer behavior, it is seen that market-oriented initiatives are shifting towards digital initiatives. The purpose of this study is to reveal what market-oriented initiatives should be based on changing consumer behavior with the effect of covid-19. In order to reveal market-oriented initiatives, the opinions of entrepreneur candidates who are studying business administration were taken with a qualitative research. As a result of the research, the entrepreneur candidates are more likely to attempt health-protective cleaning initiatives in jobs that require a physical work environment; In jobs that do not require a physical work environment, it has emerged that they want to work mostly on digital initiatives.

This article discusses the cultural conceptions of trust underpinning the experimentation of blockchain startup applications beyond the financial sector. Based on qualitative research undertaken in the context of the so-called "Blockchain 2.0" scene, we show how a peculiar conception of trust, which blends the libertarian views of blockchain inventors with the neoliberal culture of competition and meritocracy that is typical of the startup world, underpins these implementations. As a result, we argue that "Blockchain 2.0" entrepreneurs ultimately fail to recognize the eminently social nature of the trust-building process. They emerge from our observation as unable to comprehend the extent to which the implementation of blockchain in a societal (i.e., not purely financial) context cannot do away with considerations about what kind of "social" the technology intervenes within, and find difficult to effectively conceive of how this technology embeds in existing social relations and power structures.

Military spouses are situated at the junction of the military and civilian worlds. They provide necessary support to military strategic and operational objectives and are also expected to perform a traditional spousal role of the 'good' military wife. This article demonstrates the existence of strong military partner archetypes which guide military community norms and expectations of spousal behaviour. In 14 qualitative interviews and five focus groups with Australian military partners, participants revealed many different, yet firm, sentiments related to identity, including fierce independence; a sense of belonging; self-reliance; a desire to help others; belief in fairness and pragmatism. The archetypes outlined in this article shape how partners see their role, and how they interact with other non-military partners and the military organization. This research delivers insights into optimizing military partner services to better support spouses through deployment, relocation and other military experiences.

With large social media platforms coming under increasing pressure to deplatform far-right users, the Alternative Technology movement (Alt-Tech) emerged as a new digital support infrastructure for the far right. We conduct a qualitative analysis of the prominent Alt-Tech platform Gab, a social networking service primarily modelled on Twitter, to assess the far-right virtual community on the platform. We find Gab's technological affordances – including its lack of content moderation, culture of anonymity, microblogging architecture and funding model – have fostered an ideologically eclectic far-right community united by fears of persecution at the hands of 'Big Tech'. We argue that this points to the emergence of a novel techno-social victimology as an axis of far-right virtual community, wherein shared experiences or fears of being deplatformed facilitate a coalescing of assorted far-right tendencies online.

We consider how various coalitions influence redevelopment projects in cities, especially as communities demand more inclusion in the development process. Based on qualitative research, we investigate the approval process for the 235-acre megadevelopment project at Port Covington in Baltimore, Maryland, and how stakeholders, including developers, community-based organizations, politicians, and impacted community members view the project, the tax increment financing (TIF) granted by the city, and community benefits agreements (CBAs). Community leaders leaned hard on the development corporation, demanding community and city-wide benefits before a TIF could be approved. We analyze the processes of the Port Covington CBA within the context of the political and economic dynamics of Baltimore. This case study adds to our understanding of how communities respond to corporate-led developments through coalition building, effectively gaining power in how elite governing regimes dictate development in cities.

This comparative case study uses qualitative data to explore and analyze the institutional obstacles that women in reserved seats face to their political empowerment in the Gram Panchayat in India and the Union Parishad in Bangladesh. The findings reveal that women in reserved seats in both countries confront some fundamental institutional barriers, such as a masculine model of politics, lack of political party support, as well as lack of power and resources. Indian women face serious problems—the inclusion of ex‐officio members, the rotational system, bureaucratic dominance, and partisan elections—whereas Bangladeshi women suffer from the unequal distribution of reserved seats under a quota policy and lack of clarity in rules, power, and provisions. A lack of financial resources limits the effective participation of women members in the decision‐making process in both countries. Further institutional reforms are vital to ensure women's political empowerment through reserved seats in both countries.

This qualitative study focuses on three female facilitators and their narratives of participating in a community-based social and emotional learning (SEL) study in China. A combination of communities of practice and critical feminist pedagogy is used as theoretical framework. Narrative inquiry is applied to portray and make sense of each facilitator's transformative learning experience. The dialogical space that is created by the study allows them to bring in their personal experiences and assists them in critically examining voice and silence in the current trend of SEL in China. The narratives provide a critical lens to re-examine the localization of Eurocentric SEL frameworks in the Chinese context as well as empower individual educators to become agents of change for social transformation. This study suggests an alternative framework based on interpreting social and emotional meanings in the local context to offer insights and critiques to the SEL global movement.

This paper seeks to contribute to the droughts discourse through explaining the vulnerability of women to droughts by analysing the different livelihood strategies employed by women and their responses. The conservation of resources (COR) theory and ecological theory was applied to understand the issues of vulnerability, adaptation and coping with droughts. A qualitative approach was utilised through the application of semi-structured interviews, observation and document review tools. Although the element of behavioural change is illuminated in the behavioural theories and applied in some studies such as HIV and AIDS, this element is missing in the drought literature. In this paper, the behavioural change element that emerged is not only important but also relevant in understanding the dynamics associated with drought responses. This generates a novice understanding and explanation of the vulnerability of women to droughts and in so doing, it shapes the drought discourse beyond the traditional arena.

AbstractIn May 2018, Mesut Özil, a third‐generation Turkish immigrant, was photographed with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This incident was constructed by the media and politicians as an endorsement for Erdoğan in the upcoming Turkish election and resulted in a public discussion about Özil's loyalty to German democratic values. The debate intensified especially after the World Cup and led to Özil's resignation from the national team via social media on 22 July 2018, where he cited racism against him as one of his reasons. Newspapers, news magazines and tabloids all over the world covered the story, discussing racism and the failure of German integration policies. Through a qualitative media content analysis of German national newspapers and tabloid press articles following the publication of the photograph of Erdoğan and Özil on 14 May 2018, this paper will analyse how Özil was portrayed in the media.

Purpose: Thermal and Physicochemical evaluation of açaí seeds for its use in thermochemical conversion processes for clean energy generation. Methodology: Experimental and qualitative research, using analyzes such as: Thermal analysis (TG/DTG and DTA curves) and Calorimetry, Ultimate and Proximate analyzes, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Optical Emission Spectroscopy - Inductively Coupled Plasma. Findings: It was noted that the açaí seeds presented carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen contents as majority elements and a Higher Heating Value (HHV) of 19.8 MJ kg-1. Nitrogen and lead elements were found as trace elements. However, highly polluting elements, e.g., sulfur, cadmium and arsenic were not detected in the samples. Originality: The utilization of açaí seeds by means of thermoconversion processes for bioenergetic purposes can be an attractive socioenvironmental, reducing disposal in inappropriate places, adding considerable value to waste and still protecting the environment.
