The relationship between women's education & employment in GB & the dramatic changes in British family formation in recent decades are examined based on data drawn from the British General Household Survey. Increased cohabitation, reduced marriage, & delay in childbearing are found. Education is contended to be a powerful influence on the transition to marriage & parenthood among women. It is concluded that the current directions of economic & social change in GB predict a movement toward later & more varied patterns of family formation. 9 Tables, 5 Figures, 22 References. M. SummaryAssortative mating for 22 anthropometric and body composition characteristics and social indicators was studied in a Spanish sample of 114 married couples. Significant spousal similarity was found for occupation, educational level and number of siblings. Sex–age adjusted spouse correlations were significant for stature, ileospinal height, total arm length, and biacromial breadth. Spouse correlations were not altered after allowance for socioeconomic effects. When couples were grouped according to marriage duration, differences in mate correlations for fatness were detected, suggesting a cohabitational effect on spouse resemblance.

This article reports the findings of an exploratory study of the experiences of 51 battered women in four spouse abuse shelters in a Florida county with a preferred arrest policy. Despite this policy, which encourages the police to arrest spouse abusers, the police arrested only 12 abusers, although 36 women wanted their abusers to be arrested. Moreover, the police provided information about injunctions for the protection and spouse abuse shelters in only 22 cases. Possible reasons for these findings and implications for social work practice are presented.

Telephone survey data collected in 1993 from 620 Jews & 130 Arabs in Israel are used to assess attitudes toward the law & the legal system. Findings support the notion that Arabs as members of a minority group express a higher degree of disobedience & express a higher sense of injustice. "Der Beitrag analysiert den Entscheidungsprozeß des Personalmanagements bei der Auswahl geeigneter Bewerber für eine Stelle des kaufmännischen Führungskräftenachwuchses. Hierzu wurden eine persönliche Befragung sowie ein Experiment mit Personalmanagern aus 22 großen deutschen Unternehmen durchgeführt. Die Untersuchung zeigt, daß sich Personalmanager vor allem der Auswahlinstrumente 'Bewerberunterlagen' und 'Einzelinterviews' bedienen. Als Auswahlkriterien spielen dabei insbesondere der 'vorgelegte Lebenslauf' und das 'persönliche Auftreten' die entscheidende Rolle. Bewerberqualifikationen wie zum Beispiel die 'Examensnote' oder die 'Studiendauer' dienen lediglich als Mindestkriterien, die jeder Bewerber zu erfüllen hat, will er in die engere Auswahl gelangen. Die letztendliche Entscheidung, ob ein Bewerber ausgewählt wird oder nicht, wird durch das subjektive Urteil des Personalmanagers bestimmt. Dieses richtet sich danach, ob der Bewerber 'zum Unternehmen paßt'. Es ist zu vermuten, daß in der Vielzahl der Unternehmen eine Unternehmenskultur aktiv gelebt wird, die sich zwar nur schwer in objektivierbare Kriterien fassen läßt, den Personalmanagern aber bewußt ist und damit ihren Auswahlprozeß entscheidend prägt." Avec la loi du 22 juillet 1987, dite "Loi Malhuret", l'autorité parentale conjointe avec désignation de la résidence habituelle de l'enfant est devenue le principe de référence pour l'organisation de la vie de l'enfant après le divorce. Mais des parents ne se satisfont pas de cette prescription de la loi et souhaitent avoir avec eux leur enfant sur un mode partagé. L'occultation de cette pratique d'alternance des résidences souligne l'existence du hiatus entre droit et pratiques parentales qu'analysent Gérard Neyrand et Sarah Mekboul dans leur recherche.

Das Wahlverhalten in Großbritannien bei allgemeinen Wahlen im Zeitraum von 1964 bis 1987 wird analysiert. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, daß in den wohlhabenden Regionen im Süden Großbritanniens die Schichtenzugehörigkeit bei Wahlentscheidungen weit weniger ins Gewicht fällt als im ärmeren Norden, wo die gesellschaftlichen Cleavages weiterhin starken Einfluß bei Wahlentscheidungen haben. Abstract. Estimates of voting by occupational class are provided for each of 22 regions in the UK for every general election since 1964. These are analysed, using a log‐linear modelling strategy, to identify the changing degree of class dealignment and spatial polarisation within the British electorate over the period. The growing regional variability is consistent with expectations regarding the increasing volume of economic voting and the pattern of uneven development in the country: the north‐south and urban‐rural divides have both widened.

Im großen Umfang dienen Materialien der entsprechenden zentralen Berliner Sozialbehörden aus dem BA Koblenz und der regionalen österreichischen Ämter aus dem Allgemeinen Verwaltungsarchiv Wien als Quellenbasis. Die beim Anschluß März 1938 vollmundig verkündeten Versprechungen sozialpolitischer Art werden alsbald zurückgestellt und alle Maßnahmen den deutschen Arbeitsmarkt- und Kriegspolitik-Erfordernissen unterstellt. Im Bereich der Rentenversicherung und Lohnpolitik bedeutet das für breite Bevölkerungsgruppen eine Verschlechterung des Lebensstandards von bis zu 20 v. H. angesichts der trotz Preisstop steigenden Lebenskosten. Generell bleibt das Lebensniveau unter dem des "Altreiches". Hingegen gelingt es durch rigorose Staatsinventionen, Arbeitsdienst und Militarisierung der Arbeit, die Arbeitslosigkeit des Jahres 1938 von 22 v. H. in etwa drei Jahren völlig abzubauen, so daß ab 1942 auch in Österreich der massenhafte Einsatz von Zwangsarbeitern beginnt. (WB)
