The author points out that the writing of Lao history presents particular problems, not because of the quality and quantity of sources available, but because of the difficulty in deciding what is meant by "Lao history". There have been discontinuities in the existence of the Lao state. One way to deal with these is to identify continuities that transcend them. According to the author, the individual's relationship to the state in China has all along been one of dependency and not one based on the rights of individuals. Over time there have been ups and downs in the relationship between the state and the individual. What is significant in China today is that the decline in the legitimacy of the Beijing regime is being accompanied by a loosening of institutional sub-groups and a marked increase in people seeking individual freedom. As the author sees it, eleven years after the start of an insurgent war, Peru's military appears no closer to defeating the two insurgencies that have plagued the country since 1980. He believes that the virtual monopoly on decision-making exercised by the Peruvian military did not lead to the institution of a consistent counter-insurgency programme. After a brief look at the armed forces in transition (1975-80), the author examines the military anti-guerrilla campaign (1981-88) and the period of military fragmentation (1988-91)

As the author sees it, ambiguities about the identity of Israel create fundamental dilemmas for Israelis when they approach issues of state security. By contrast, change in Asia since the end of Cold War has been slower, less dramatic and halting. The author examines the mode of censorship and reportage of atomic damage and casualties in one of Japan's leading newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun, during the months of August and September 1945, as well as representative cases of censorship during the early years of Allied Occupation. By thus going back to the very start of press coverage of atomic damage the author hopes to be able to shed light on the evolution of the nuclear discourse in Japan and, to a lesser extent, the USA. SUMMARY. There is a long established link between poverty and child health, both in the United Kingdom and in other countries. In this review of the literature, the author explores the nature of this link. The paper discusses the historical background and briefly reviews the evidence from the developing countries and the controversy surrounding the definition of poverty before examining the association between child health and poverty in the United Kingdom. The author concludes with some suggestions for future research and some thoughts on the implications for doctors working with children

THE MODEL YIELDS A SIMPLE EQUILIBRIUM RELATIONSHIP AMONG THREE VARIABLES: THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF INVESTOR CONTRIBUTIONS A CANDIDATE RECEIVES, THE MONETARY VALUE OF THE FAVORS HE HAS PROMISED, AND HIS PROBABILITY OF WINNING. USING DATA ON OPEN-SEAT RACES FOR THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE AUTHOR TESTS THE MODEL. HE CONCLUDES THAT, DESPITE THE STARKNESS OF THE MODEL, THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS ARE HIGHLY SUPPORTIVE.

In this article, the author tries to estimate the number of Cham Muslims in Kampuchea between 1975 and 1979 in order to find out the actual number of these Muslims killed by the Pol Pot regime. According to him, all Cambodian population statistics, of whatever period, include a large measure of hypothesis, assumption, extrapolation and pure guesswork and they may not be adequate for the type of calculations undertaken by either Ben Kiernen (see this journal vol. 20, no. 4, 1988) or by the author. Fundamental ideological changes have transformed Soviet positions on participation in the global economy. This new Soviet approach to foreign economic relations involves more organic foreign participation in the Soviet economy through joint ventures with firms from both capitalist and socialist countries. The author explores Soviet economic policies toward East Asia and the Pacific basin under Gorbachev. The author believes that the chief obstacle to a major break through in Soviet economic relations with East Asia is the USSR's inability to enact major structural reforms in the domestic economy.
