The Common Security and Defence Policy maps out how the EU – established primarily to be an economic organisation – can purposefully prepare for and apply the use of military force. In this insightful work, Per M. Norheim-Martinsen argues that, since the EU is not a state but nevertheless does embody some non-intergovernmental characteristics, neither EU studies nor strategic studies is sufficient for fully understanding the Policy itself. Combining the two fields, the author utilises the instrumentality and clarity of the strategic approach, while retaining an understanding of the unique character of the EU as a strategic actor. In so doing, he provides a fruitful conceptual framework for analysing the development of the CSDP, how it functions in practice and how it will continue to evolve in the face of the challenges which lie ahead. This book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of European studies, international relations and strategic studies
Providing a comprehensive analysis of the administration of the European Union, this book examines the law and the legal framework within which it operates. Looking at the diverse approaches, techniques, and structures of public administration, it assesses the solutions they offer to political, social, and economic problems.
Purpose This research uses the institutional theory perspective to better understand the social dynamics of the European Union (EU) tourism policy and its directions. Design/methodology/approach A thorough literature review involving a critical discourse analysis on the regulative, normative and cultural elements of institutionalisation improves our understanding of the EU policy, in terms of its processes, content and outcomes. Therefore, this paper explores how the European institutions have incrementally legitimised tourism policy among Member States. Findings Over the years, the EU's policies were intended to enhance the European single market whilst supporting the growth of the industrial competitiveness, sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship. This has inevitably led to the development of new policies in the realms of tourism. Originality value This contribution has identified a gap in academic research as it reports about the evolution of EU tourism policy and on the conditions of how it has been planned, organised and implemented. It also exposes the challenges of institutionalising tourism policy in intergovernmental institutions. ; peer-reviewed

Consumer confidence is considered as one of the main indicators predicting fluctuations of business cycles, while convergence of features of consumer confidence may reflect convergence of main economic indicators and actual consumer behaviour. In dissertation, convergence is assessed in terms of structure of the impact of consumer confidence factors. The structure of the impact of consumer confidence factors is identified using adapted method of econometric decomposition, while the convergence of the structure of the impact of consumer confidence factors is assessed in the context of core-periphery model, using cluster analysis. In dissertation, groups (clusters) of countries, which share similar structure of the impact of consumer confidence factors, are identified and analysed by their dynamics. Analysis of identified clusters dynamics is used to identify steady states of convergence (or, as author define them, the "core" countries) and to assess intensity of convergence of every EU member state towards identified "core" countries in the barely covered field of consumer confidence. EU countries, in regard of convergence of the structure of the impact of consumer confidence factors, are grouped into categories of "the core", countries of a single steady state, and "periphery", in line with the concept of Krugman's core-periphery model. ; Vartotojų ekonominiai lūkesčiai makroekonominiu lygmeniu laikomi vienu svarbiausių veiksnių, turinčių įtakos verslo ciklo svyravimams, o vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių ypatybių konvergavimo procesas gali rodyti šalių pagrindinių ekonominių rodiklių, realios vartotojų elgsenos konvergenciją. Disertacijoje konvergavimo procesas vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių srityje vertinamas per vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių veiksnių poveikio struktūrą. Vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių veiksnių poveikio struktūra nustatoma taikant adaptuotą ekonometrinį dekompozicijos metodą, o vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių veiksnių poveikio struktūros konvergavimas vertinamas centro-periferijos modelio kontekste, pasitelkiant klasterinės analizės metodą. Disertacijoje identifikuotos panašia vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių veiksnių poveikio struktūra pasižyminčių šalių grupės (klasteriai) ir jų dinamika, kurios pagrindu nustatytos konvergencijos pusiausvyros ("centro") valstybės ir įvertintas likusių valstybių konvergavimo intensyvumas "centro" valstybių link iki šiol per mažai tirtoje vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių srityje. ES valstybės vartotojų ekonominių lūkesčių veiksnių poveikio struktūros konvergavimo aspektu suskirstytos į "centro", stabilios pusiausvyros ir "periferijos" valstybių kategorijas, atitinkančias Krugman centro-periferijos modelio koncepciją. ; Ekonomikos ir vadybos fakultetas ; Ekonomikos katedra

"This significant book provides a comprehensive analysis of the global dimension of European Union (EU) counter-terrorism. It focuses on the growth of the EU as a global counter-terrorism actor, from it having almost no role in 2001 to becoming a significantly greater force in recent years. Analysing one of the most important policy areas of European integration, authors Christian Kaunert, Alex MacKenzie and Sarah Leonard consider the key question of why the EU may have become a global actor in counter-terrorism. The authors then develop a unique theoretical approach in the form of actorness and collective securitization, which analyses the EU's evolution as a counter-terrorism actor in different case studies, such as counter-terrorism in the transatlantic relationship, North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. Overall, this book highlights that the EU is, in fact, becoming a counter-terrorism actor of growing importance and with an ever-diversifying number of policy options available. Addressing topical matters, this book will be a key resource for scholars, researchers and students in fields such as European studies, international relations, political science and governance. It will also attract the attention of practitioners, politicians, non-governmental and civil society organisations"--

This new Sixth Edition of a major work by the well-known competition law team at Van Bael & Bellis in Brussels brings the book up to date to take account of the many developments in the case law and relevant legislation that have occurred since the Fifth Edition in 2010. The authors have also taken the opportunity to write a much-extended chapter on private enforcement and a dedicated section on competition law in the pharmaceutical sector. As one would expect, the new edition continues to meet the challenge for businesses and their counsel, providing a thoroughly practical guide to the application of the EU competition rules. The critical commentary cuts through the theoretical underpinnings of EU competition law to expose its actual impact on business. In this comprehensive new edition, the authors examine such notable developments as the following: important rulings concerning the concept of a restriction by object under Article 101; the extensive case law in the field of cartels, including in relation to cartel facilitation and price signalling; important Article 102 rulings concerning pricing and exclusivity, including the Post Danmark and Intel judgments, as well as standard essential patents; the current block exemption and guidelines applicable to vertical agreements, including those applicable to the motor vehicle sector; developments concerning online distribution, including the Pierre Fabre and Coty rulings; the current guidelines and block exemptions in the field of horizontal cooperation, including the treatment of information exchange; the evolution of EU merger control, including court defeats suffered by the Commission and the case law on procedural infringements; the burgeoning case law related to pharmaceuticals, including concerning reverse payment settlements; the current technology transfer guidelines and block exemption; procedural developments, including in relation to the right to privacy, access to file, parental liability, fining methodology, inability to pay and hybrid settlements; the implementation of the Damages Directive and the first interpretative rulings. As a comprehensive, up-to-date and above all practical analysis of the EU competition rules as developed by the Commission and EU Courts, this authoritative new edition of a classic work stands alone. Like its predecessors, it will be of immeasurable value to both business persons and their legal advisers
