In contemporary Philippine society, homosexuals are discriminated against and viewed as a comedic symbols. This is in contrast to the accounts of Philippine history which feature a wealth of tales and lore that depict homosexuals as an accepted part of the society. This paper introduces an anthropological and cultural study on the history of homosexuals from the precolonial to contemporary Philippines. It analyzes the influence of colonizers in the modern perception of homosexuals in the media today.The paper traces the early experiences and portrayals of homosexuals in the confesionarios, diccionarios, guidelines, and manuals of Spanish missionaries. These experiences and portrayals are compared to the contemporary guidelines set forth by the Movie and Television Classification and Review Board (MTRCB). In the end, this paper aims to eradicate the misconception about the modern bakla and present more of their richer traditions as asog, bayoguin, and binabayi.

The collection of papers selected for this special issue brings to a wider audience a deep understanding of the achievements, challenges, and prospects in several key issue-areas of Brazilian politics. Taken together, the articles provide a comprehensive review of the legacy of the most popular president in Brazilian history, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a tough act to follow. They also bring an early assessment of policy change and continuity under Dilma Rousseff, the first female president in Brazilian history. In this special issue, UK and Brazil-based authors reflect upon the most controversial aspects of the transition from Lula da Silva to Dilma Rousseff and provide analyses from different theoretical perspectives and disciplines. The book 'Land matters: landscape photography, culture and identity' features images from John Darwell's 'Dark Days' (2001) series, including 'Hadrian's Wall'. Text on the photographer's practice/history is provided by author Liz Wells. In this major work on landscape photography, extensively illustrated in colour and black & white, Liz Wells is concerned with the ways in which photographers engage with issues about land, its representation and idealisation. She demonstrates how the visual interpretation of land as landscape reflects and reinforces contemporary political, social and environmental attitudes. She also asks what is at stake in landscape photography now through placing critical appraisal of key examples of work by photographers working in, for example, the USA, in Europe, Scandinavia and Baltic areas, within broader art historical and political concerns. This illuminating book will interest readers in photography and media, geography, art history and travel, as well as those concerned with environmental issues.

AbstractThe papers in this special issue are the products of a conference, "History and China's Foreign Relations: The Achievements and Contradictions of American Scholarship, " held at the University of Southern California in February 2008. All of us, professors, policy advisors and policy-makers, think it would be helpful if there was more informed discussion among the general public of the challenges of China's rise in the world and our responses to it, but we all acknowledge that the American public sphere is a big mess, fragmented by the apparent riches of the Internet, dumbed down to the vanishing point in the major media. Can we as scholars make some beginnings in drawing on China's long and complex history of relations with other peoples to find generalizations and patterns that help to illuminate the present for the policy elite and for the concerned public?

By comparing two international sporting events in the context of Tunisia at the beginning of the 21st century (the regional competition of the Mediterranean Games in September 2001 & the continental tournament of the Africa Cup in 2004), this article clarifies recent & current issues of political use of the past. It appears that the setting of sporting event reports between immediate political history & long history aims at promoting the current government, both nationally & internationally. In replacing the analysis in the context of political evolution in post-colonial Tunisia, the study shows how the increasing media impact of sporting events is used by endogen nationalism, official ideology, & even more so by authoritarian leaders. Beyond the continuous evidence of the exploitation of sporting events for political & ideological ends, it emphasizes the rebuilding of the imaginary identities of post-colonial nation-states. This colloquium focuses on urban and princely space in the Duchy of Brabant in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The focus is on how territorial developments were perceived in different social milieus. After all, urban elites, the monarch and his entourage had different - but sometimes similar - opinions about what Brabant actually was and used various media to communicate their ideas about it. Administrative, narrative and cartographic sources, architecture, literature and art bear witness to this. The Belgian-Dutch "Stichting Colloquium De Brabantse Stad" organizes an international meeting every three years at which various aspects of the history of the cities and of urban life in the old Duchy of Brabant are examined. The colloquium is organized alternately in the provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, North Brabant and in the Brussels Capital Region. The XIXth colloquium, taking place in Brussels at the Université Saint-Louis, is being organized in cooperation with the NWO research project Imagining a territory.

Increasingly dismissed as a quaint, rural pastime, logging remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, with loggers occupying a precarious position amid unstable markets, expanding global competition, and growing labor discord. Examining a time of transition and decline in Maine's forest economy, Andrew Egan traces pathways for understanding the challenges that have faced Maine's logging community and, by extension, the state's forestry sector, from the postwar period through today. Seeking greater profits, logging companies turned their crews loose at midcentury, creating a workforce of independent contractors who were forced to purchase expensive equipment and compete for contracts with the mills. Drawing on his own experience with the region's forest products industry, interviews with Maine loggers, media coverage, and court documents, Egan follows the troubled recent history of the industry and its battle for survival"--

Liberalism and Transformation is the first scholarly work that explores the historical, philosophical, and intellectual development of global liberalism since the nineteenth century in the context of the deployment of violence, force, and intervention. Using an approach that includes interpretive and contextual analysis of texts from writers, philosophers, and policy-makers across nearly two centuries, as well as historiographical and historical analysis of archival documents (some of which have been recently declassified) and other media, Liberalism and Transformation narrates the messy history of emancipatory liberalism and its engagement with issues of war and peace. The book contributes to both a rethinking of liberal democracy and its relationship to world politics, as well as the effects of liberal internationalism on global processes. Furthermore, Liberalism and Transformation invites readers to reflect on global ethics and transformation in world politics. In the first place, it shows how ethical imaginings of the world have direct effects on actions of transformative importance. In the second place, it suggests that discourses are fluid, changing, and complex.

Born in Queenscliff to English migrant parents, William Lawrence Baillieu first rose to prominence as a successful auctioneer during Melbourne's feverish land boom of the 1880s. He quickly built an enormous fortune, which he then subsequently lost in the crash of the early 1890s. But, everthe astute and daring entrepreneur, WL Baillieu resurrected his fortunes and those of his family by starting his own real estate agency and investing in the mining and infrastructure that would drive Australia's economy in the 20th century. In the early days of Federation, WL entered state politics and rose to become Minister of Public Works and Health. He continued to foster his business and media interests throughout his life, and by the time he retired, WL was director of the Herald and Weekly Times, the Electrolytic Zinc Company, the Dunlop Rubber Company, and Carlton and United Breweries. Peter Yule's biography is the first ever of this significant Australian - financier, philanthropist and founding figure of the Baillieu family dynasty - whose name and influence is inextricably wound throughout Melbourne's history

The SC Hakoah was not only Vienna's most prominent "Jewish" (Zionist) sports club of the Interwar years, but also part of the Viennese popular sports culture. The media constantly covered the club and its members. A closer look at the sports reporting reveals that different genres of the media (texts, photographs, and caricatures) produced different meanings. In this way the depiction of the Hakoah Sports Club was part of a complex culture producing "Jewish difference" between the poles of Antisemitism and "Jewish Vienna." The analysis clearly demonstrates that the different "genres," i.e. texts, pictures, and caricatures, produced diverse messages to Viennese Jews: Their inclusion should be based on "assimilation," although it had to be clear that they always remained identifiable.

There was a printer's error on p. 658 of D. M. P. McCarthy's article, "Media as Ends: Money and the Underdevelopment of Tanganyika to 1940," in the September 1976 issue of the Journal. The last sentence in the second paragraph should read: "There were, however, local appreciations of copper over silver caused by a shortage of cents which, in turn, aggravated undersupply as copper became sensitive to the speculative demand."

For example, in twentieth and twenty-first century Brazilian fiction, television, and political discourse, vampires have risen from their supposedly European origins as expressions of urban decay, comic excess, and government corruption in Brazil. Beyond these representations, I focus on three contemporary novels in which the vampire also plays a starring role. O vampiro que descobriu o Brasil (1999) by Ivan Jaf, Aventuras do vampiro de Palmares (2014) by Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, and Dom Pedro I Vampiro (2015) by Nazarethe Fonseca stand out from other creative reimaginings of the vampire within a Brazilian cultural context. Exploring fiction's potential for rewriting dominant national narratives, they cast vampires as historical actors in order to protagonize indigenous and black "Others" in Brazilian history. However, at the same time as they rewrite both the nineteenth-century European literary origins of the vampire and the history of Brazil, they also reinscribe the modern myths of racial mixture, or mestiçagem, and cannibalism, or antropofagia, popularized by Gilberto Freyre and Oswald de Andrade, respectively. In this way, the novels exemplify the complex tension between revising and perpetuating cultural stereotypes in fictional retellings of Brazilian history.

La Edad Media en la Península Ibérica estuvo plagada de acciones militares; la mayoría de ellas desarrolladas en lo que hoy conocemos como Reconquista. Pero también hubo frecuentes luchas entre los diversos reinos cristianos peninsulares. Esta que traemos a la colección Guerreros y Batallas es una de ellas: la porfía entre Castilla y Portugal por la sucesión en el trono luso. Se trata de uno de los episodios menos conocidos de este turbulento periodo, pero el texto que el lector tiene entre las manos contribuirá, sin duda alguna, a acercarle a aquellos hechos. El conocimiento fundamental de aquella guerra fue la batalla de Aljubarrota, que el autor pone en el contexto de un enfrentamiento que adquirió tintes internacionales con la intervención de tropas inglesas y francesas. Se trata pues de un valioso trabajo que viene a rellenar uno de los huecos existentes en la historia militar española del siglo XIV y que recomendamos encarecidamente a los que tengan interés en conocer una guerra tan poco estudiada.
