All African countries agree that human development is a fundamental aspiration of the peoples of the region and the governments that represent them. So they all adopted the Millennium Declaration. However, overall progress has been below expectations. Between 1990 and 2000, African countries averaged only 10 per cent of the Millennium Development Goals, instead of the 40 per cent required to be on the right track. The global analysis of MDG monitoring shows that 4 countries have reached a number of specific targets and that more than one third of the countries of the subregion could reach the main objectives, particularly in the areas of schooling, nutrition, and access to clean water. Other countries, on the other hand, could face real difficulties in meeting the challenges without effective and lasting support from the international community. Despite the mixed record of partnership agreements, many experts believe that achieving the MDGs in Africa cannot be achieved without international partnerships. © 2020 by the authors. ; The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of physical activity (PA) and the degree of obesity with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS) who participated in the Predimed-Plus study. A total of 6875 subjects between 55 and 75 years of age with MetS were selected and randomized in 23 Spanish centers. Subjects were classified according to categories of body mass index (BMI). PA was measured with the validated Registre Gironí del Cor (REGICOR) questionnaire and subjects were classified according to their PA level (light, moderate, vigorous) and the HRQoL was measured with the validated short-form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. By using the ANOVA model, we found a positive and statistically significant association between the level of PA and the HRQoL (aggregated physical and mental dimensions p < 0.001), but a negative association with higher BMI in aggregated physical dimensions p < 0.001. Furthermore, women obtained lower scores compared with men, more five points in all fields of SF-36. AbstractFree Trade Agreements (FTA) have the direct effect of increasing trade between the countries involved. FTAs can be leveraged by the "bridge" concept, particularly when countries of different sizes are involved. The bridge concept is this: manufacturers from non‐FTA countries can transfer final stages of production to one member of the FTA in question, and then be eligible for free trade with the other FTA members. We analyze the bridge concept and identify conditions under which this alternative makes economic and business sense. We use the FTA's between the US and Israel, and the EEC and Israel as examples. Naturally, the analysis is applicable to FTAs between other countries. The fact that the U.S‐Israel FTA have served as blueprint for the US‐Canada FTA, should make the approach developed in this paper particularly relevant for Canadian readers.RésuméLes accords de libre‐échange (ALE) ont pour effet d'augmenter le volume des échanges commerciaux entre les pays concernés. L'impact des ALEs peut être amplifié par l'utilisation du concept des produits de jonction, en particulier lorsque les pays concernés sont de taille différente. Le concept des produits de jonction se résume ainsi: les producteurs des pays non‐ALE peuvent transférer les dernières étapes de production dans l'un des pays membre de l'ALE et ainsi devenir éligible au libre‐échange avec d'autres membres de l'ALE. Nous analysons le concept de jonction et identifions les conditions sous lesquelles cette alternative est profitable tant d'un point de vue économique que d'affaires. Nous illustrons nos propos par l'exemple des ALEs entre Israël et les Etats‐Unis, et entre Israël et la Communauté Economique Européenne. Evidemment, cette analyse peut être étendue à d'autre pays. Le fait que l'ALE Israël‐EU ait servi de guide pour l'ALE Canada‐EU devrait rendre notre approche particulièrement pertinente pour le lecteur canadien.
