"Historians have not convincingly explained modern capitalism's two major economic crises, the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-2009. Accounting for Crises offers a new explanation, why both began and were more severe in the USA ("America"), based on an accounting interpretation of Marx's theory of crises. It explains their origins in capitalists' control of accumulation, which reveals important overlooked roles for Irving Fisher's accounting theory. This theory, by allowing discretion in accounts, in the context of falling rates of profit, encouraged "swindling", overstating reported profits, and understating their risk, which facilitated and aggravated both crises. Framed by Fisher's theory, during the 1920s American accounting theorists justified discretion, which Creating the "Big Mess" (the companion volume) concluded it management used to conservatively smooth earnings. Accounting for Crises shows that Fisher's theory , also underlays the popular new theory of investment that justified valuing shares using reported earnings, which encouraged their manipulation and legitimized "speculation". This, it argues, underlays America's exceptional late-1920s stock market boom, the 1929 Great Crash, and the depth and length of its Great Depression. Prominently associated with the boom, Fisher became unpopular after the crash, his name disappearing from public debate. Nevertheless, the book concludes, his theory hindered economic recovery, weakened 1930s reforms, undermined accounting regulation from the late-1930s, and following his rehabilitation from the late-1950s, underlies the Financial Accounting Standards Board's conceptual framework, which by allowing off-balance-sheet accounting for securitization-SPEs, fostered the 2007 "credit crunch" that triggered the 2008-2009 Global Financial Crisis (GFC)"--

Klimakommunikation bildet eine zentrale - und oft vernachlässigte - Schnittstelle in den Bemühungen, die Klimakrise zu überwinden und die weitere Zerstörung der natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen zu stoppen. Ohne umfassende politische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Veränderungen kann Deutschland seine nationalen und internationalen Verpflichtungen im Klimaschutz nicht erfüllen. Das erfordert zum einen rechtliche und finanzielle Maßnahmen, die Rahmen setzen, zum anderen aber die Akzeptanz und die Unterstützung der Bürger*innen. Weil für sie der nötige Wandel Gewohnheiten und Verhaltensweisen betrifft, die mit starken Emotionen, persönlichen Werten, sozialen Normen und anderen psychologischen Faktoren verbunden ist, muss auch die Kommunikation diese Faktoren berücksichtigen und daran anknüpfen. Das Verbreiten von sachlicher Information genügt dafür nicht. Nötig ist darum eine strategische Planung, die ausgehend vom konkreten Zweck der Kommunikation die relevante Zielgruppe bestimmt, ihre Besonderheiten charakterisiert und ihre Bedürfnisse erkennt. Daraus lassen sich - anknüpfend an Werte, Emotionen und andere psychologischen Faktoren und gestützt auf die wissenschaftliche Literatur - die geeigneten Kommunikationsansätze ableiten sowie passende Inhalte und Formate auswählen. Viele Bürger*innen benötigen konkretes Handlungswissen und das Gefühl der Selbstwirksamkeit, müssen sich also selbst die Veränderungen zutrauen. Dabei spielen insbesondere Geschichten, Fotos und Videos sowie Framing zentrale Rollen. In der Kommunikation die gängigen Muster von Desinformation zu erkennen und darauf zu reagieren sowie Falschinformation nach anerkannten Regeln zu widerlegen, hilft dabei, die eigenen Botschaften wirksam zu übermitteln. All diese Schritte lassen sich auch von öffentlichen Stellen umsetzen. Beispiele europäischer Partnerländer zeigen zudem, dass der staatliche Einfluss auch in andere Bereiche der Gesellschaft hinein koordinierend wirken kann, um effiziente Ansätze der Klimakommunikation zu verbreiten.

In Deutschland und weltweit werden ständig neue und innovative Infrastrukturlösungen entwickelt, die das Potenzial haben, zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit beizutragen. Dieses Potenzial wird oft nur unzureichend genutzt. Das Forschungsvorhaben TRAFIS 2 beschäftigt sich damit, wie innovativen Lösungen, die zu mehr Klimaschutz, Ressourcenschutz, Wirtschaftlichkeit, sozialer Gerechtigkeit und Versorgungssicherheit (Resilienz) beitragen können, insgesamt also zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit, besser verbreitet werden können. Besonders auf kommunaler und regionaler Ebene wurden Erfolgsfaktoren untersucht, die gezielt beeinflusst werden können, um die Verbreitung zu fördern – zum Beispiel die Unterstützung von Demonstrationsprojekten und Experimentierräumen, die Vernetzung von relevanten Akteuren, die Verstetigung von Kooperationen in institutionellen Prozessen. Schließlich wurde mit TRAFIS.NB ein Tool entwickelt und angewendet, um die Nachhaltigkeitswirkungen innovativer Infrastrukturlösungen prozessbegleitend zu bewerten. Die Hauptnutzer*innen dieser Bewertung sind Betreiber*innen und Planer*innen von Infrastrukturen sowie öffentliche Verwaltungen. Der Bewertungsprozess kann zum Beispiel in Machbarkeitsstudien integriert werden, um Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte direkt einspeisen.
