Nach Jahren der Verhandlungen verständigten sich im Mai 2021 Regierungsdelegationen der Republik Namibia und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf ein "Versöhnungsabkommen", in dem die zwischen 1904 und 1908 in der damaligen Kolonie "Deutsch-Südwestafrika" an den Herero und Nama verübten Verbrechen als Völkermord anerkannt und eine Entschuldigung Deutschlands beim namibischen Staat und den Nachkommen der Opfer ausgesprochen wurde. Damit gewannen die Themen "Kolonialismus", "koloniale Gewalt" und "kolonialer Genozid" in "Deutsch-Südwestafrika" über Fachkreise hinaus neue Aktualität und grosse öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit. In den Diskussionen, die in Politik und Medien geführt wurden, offenbarten sich allerdings auch eklatante Wissenslücken hinsichtlich der deutschen Kolonisierung und der viktimisierten Gruppen, vor allem der Ova-Herero und (Oorlam-) Nama, sowie eine mangelnde Differenzierung und Präzision des Gewaltgeschehens selbst. Auf diese Herausforderung antwortet das vorliegende Themenheft, indem es Beiträge von ausgewiesenen Expeter:innen versammelt, die den Forschungs- und Wissensstand kritisch reflektieren und mit der Erörterung neuer Aspekte die Perspektiven auf dieses Kapitel der deutschen Kolonial- und Gewaltgeschichte erweitern

Die kritische Edition der Erinnerungen von Heinrich Class erschliesst für den Vorsitzenden des Alldeutschen Verbandes die autobiographischen Erzählungen über die eng verflochtenen Netzwerke des radikalnationalistischen Milieus der "nationalen Opposition", das sich mit Ordnungskonzepten einer völkischen zivil-militärischen Diktatur folgenreich über die politische und soziale Zukunft Deutschlands, und nach 1918 auch für Österreich, verständigte. Die detailreichen autobiographischen Schilderungen legen auch Strukturen der Mobilisierungspolitik des Alldeutschen Verbandes frei, der sich im Übergang von der wichtigsten Interessenorganisation des "alten" bildungsbürgerlichen Radikalnationalismus des Kaiserreichs zum Honoratiorenverband in der Weimarer Republik entwickelte. Ein zusätzlicher Anhang von 1936 beschreibt die sich trotz taktischer Kooperationen seit 1929 unübersehbar entwickelnden Konkurrenzen zwischen der auf einem Legalitätskurs zur Massenorganisation aufstrebenden NSDAP und der von Class ab 1926 unterstützten DNVP um die Macht über das Führungszentrum der Weimarer Rechten auf dem Weg zur Diktatur."Heinrich Class. Die vorliegende Edition von Briefen porträtiert René König in seinen biographischen Bezügen und der Vielfalt seiner Beziehungen. Persönlichkeit, Interessen, Intentionen und Sichtweisen treten ebenso hervor wie Lebensstationen und Lebensumstände. Der erste Teilband umfasst Briefe von 1919 bis 1953. Die frühen Briefe an die Mutter dokumentieren die Studienjahre in Wien, Berlin und Paris, Lektüren, Begegnungen und Lebenskonflikte des jungen Mannes. Dem politischen Einschnitt von 1933 folgt 1937 die Entscheidung zur Emigration in die Schweiz. Der zweite Teilband dokumentiert die Zeit in Köln und zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Projekte, die das Gesicht des Fachs Soziologie in der bundesdeutschen Nachkriegsgesellschaft mit prägen werden. In diese Zeit fallen Gastprofessuren in den USA, Forschungen über die Navajo, das Partnerschaftsprojekt mit der Universität Kabul, Reisen in Europa und Asien. Hinzu kommen gesellschaftliche und politische Interventionen, Kontakte zu Intellektuellen und Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens, zu Freunden und Weggefährten. Ab Mitte der 1970er Jahre findet René König seinen zweiten Lebensmittelpunkt in Italien. Herausgegeben und mit einem Nachwort versehen von Mario König und Oliver König.

The structure of the book centres around two issues that will determine the future national security environment facing the US. Discussed are stakes of the threat, the response of the Soviet Union to the challenge of economic and related social/political decline and its implications for the Soviet national defence effort. Originally published in 1985, Deterrence in the 1980s offers analyses by leading American and Canadian scholars and decision-makers in the field of strategic studies of the current problems and dilemmas of contemporary international security with deterrence, nuclear and conventional, as the unifying conceptual theme. Deterrence as theory, as history, as psychology, as politics, as ethics and as policy is addressed. The authors outline the complexities of deterrence, in theory and in practice, and offer proposals regarding the future operationalization of deterrence in order both to reassure Western publics and to enhance Western and international security. Soviet-American strategic relations, along with the problems posed for the Western Alliance, are analysed. Within the context of NATO, the dilemmas, for both Europe and North America, of extended deterrence are raised. Despite the current crisis of deterrence, no other security strategy appears viable as long as nuclear weapons are retained for purposes of national security. However, current trends in the operationalization of deterrence - nuclear-war fighting capabilities - have raised concerns about the future of deterrence.
