"Metaphor is recognised as an important way of thinking - constructing analogies and making connections between ideas - and an important way of using language to explain abstract ideas or to find indirect but powerful ways of conveying feelings. By investigating people's use of metaphors, we can better understand their emotions, attitudes and conceptualisations, as individuals and as participants in social life. This book describes practice in the analysis of metaphor in real-world discourse. When real-world language use is taken as the site of metaphor study, researchers face methodological issues that have only recently begun to be addressed. The contributors to this volume have all had to find ways to deal with methodological issues in their own research and have developed techniques that are brought together here. Using as a basis the discourse dynamics approach to metaphor developed by the editor, the book explores links between theory and empirical investigation, exemplifies data analysis and discusses issues in research design and practice. Particular attention is paid to the processes of metaphor identification, categorisation and labelling, and to the use of corpus linguistic and other computer-assisted methods."--Publisher's description
Set up without any serious basis in experimental psychology, the linguistic framework that takes its cue from Langacker and Lakoff nevertheless presents itself as a "cognitive" theory. How was this bold move achieved, and what ideological stakes might it involve? Developed during the heyday of American neoliberalism (1979: arrival of Volcker at the head of the Fed; 1980: election of Reagan and publication of Metaphors we live by), in a period when antiscientism was in the ascendant in American humanities, Cognitive Linguistics (CL) advances a confabulated model of individual psychology as the basis for understanding people's most quintessentially social attribute, language. I will suggest several interpretations of how we might understand what is materially involved in this retreat into the mind, interrogating, among other things, the political work of George Lakoff. Lakoff's political corpus, just as significant in scope as his work on linguistics, deserves to be approached from the point of view of the history of linguistics. As I will try to show, far from constituting an anomaly with respect to "pure" linguistic research, Lakoff's political uses of cognitive linguistics suggest an interesting interpretation of the underlying tendencies of the CL tradition, in which questions of expertise – intellectual, disciplinary and political – and material concerns within and beyond the university take on key importance. Corpus linguistics has been closely intertwined with digital technology since the introduction of university computer mainframes in the 1960s. Making use of both digitized data in the form of the language corpus and computational methods of analysis involving concordancers and statistics software, corpus linguistics arguably has a place in the digital humanities. Still, it remains obscure and figures only sporadically in the literature on the digital humanities. This article provides an overview of the main principles of corpus linguistics and the role of computer technology in relation to data and method and also offers a bird's-eye view of the history of corpus linguistics with a focus on its intimate relationship with digital technology and how digital technology has impacted the very core of corpus linguistics and shaped the identity of the corpus linguist. Ultimately, the article is oriented towards an acknowledgment of corpus linguistics' alignment with the digital humanities.

The paper shows how scientific discourse took language differences into account, the social basis of its analysis, including the academic actors, their development and careers, and the political representations of these language differences. International audience ; This article questions the relationship between lexicographical publication and the linguistics normalization process in relation to the creole languages spoken in Reunion Island and in Mauritius. This work is based on a study of the production of dictionaries on those two languages during this century and their impact on the scientific community and the linguistics politics. Furthermore, this article offers a brief chronology of the main new events in the linguistico-identitarian field that marked the second half of the twentieth century to be related to the events of the twenty-first century. We will attempt to highlight the role of lexicography in the identity struggles and its involvement in the protection of minority languages. The results reveal conclusively that the development of research dedicated to lexicography is a priority in the enhancement of Reunionese and Mauritian creoles. Encouraging investigation and publication in this field is essential in the normalization linguistics politics.
