The article is devoted to the establishment and development of comparative educationin the United States. In this paper the history of comparative education is highlighted in detail as a separate scientific field. This work explores the place of comparative education in American educational science and identifies current trends of its development. The artiinstructional emphases about its place in the world of science. Educators worldwide face similar challenges in helping policy makers understand the interactions among societal aims and globalizing factors that influence formal schooling's purposes. In the United States, education has moved in a problem-focused and solutiondriven direction due to an accountability movement that demands the measurement of educational outcomes through standardized test assessments. Classic analysis of Comparative Education depicts the field's progress in terms of its different historical stages of development. The first stage has been called "the period of travelers' tales" where people's interest in the unknown led to exploration around the world. Comparative educators in the 20th century were concerned with identifying the forces shaping foreign educational systems and used quantitative methods to explain the factors impacting formal education and society and to establish cause-effect patterns of influence. The third stage of Comparative Education is characterized as one of international cooperation, peace, and understanding. Comparative Education as a subject area can be found in some schools and colleges of education throughout the United States. The Council of Learned Societies in Education has identified Comparative Education as a major academic approach that helps to define foundations of education.
; The article deals with the potential of Cossack pedagogy as a means of progressive educational tradition. It is proved that nowadays Cossack education can be a source of ideas and experience to create a new generation of Ukrainians who are physically and spiritually strong. Cossack education cultivates the ideal of a Cossack the knight, a brave, victorious warrior and a highly educated intellectual, as well as a caring owner and a generous philanthropist, a zealous Christian and a man with a keen sense of personal and national dignity. In the testimonies of the foreigners during the 17th–18th centuries it is stated that Ukrainians are «civilized and educated». The Cossacks' striving for independence, a wish to protect their rights, pro-European character of social system of the «State of Cossacks», its democratic tradition to elect authorities for state, church and school, the community character of educational liedership are noted. It was elucidated that the time of Cossacks in Ukraine is a period of the national school system formation and development, which influenced schools at different levels. Among the positive traditions of national schooling are the noble relationship between a teacher and a pupil, the cult of knowledge, patriotism, piety and high social status of the teachers. The use of native language, extensive folk pedagogy enabled widespread literacy in Ukraine. It were the pupils of national schooling institutions who became the representatives of Ukrainian Baroque culture, laid the foundations for Ukrainian literary language formation, created works on the history of Ukraine, which contributed to the formation of Ukrainian national consciousness. At present the study of national educational traditions and possibilities of their application in modern Ukrainian school is carried out at the Laboratory of Pedagogical Country Studies and Cossack Pedagogy of Sumy Pedagogical University. The aactivities conducted at Kozachata class of Sumy Comprehensive School № 25 are described. The activities are aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, enabling harmonious development of an individual and successful self-realization in the society. They facilitate the formation of a new generation of worthy citizens of our country, who carry on the values of Ukrainian culture. A complex of measures aimed at optimizing the implementation of ideas and experiences of the Cossack pedagogy in the contemporary context is elaborated.
This article offers a sociological commentary on the role of a research center in the institutional and intellectual construction of the field of comparative education. It takes the Comparative Education Research Centre (CERC) of the University of Hong Kong as the unit for analysis. It draws on a monograph published in January 2015 presenting CERC's 20-year old histories. These histories were narrated by each of CERC's Directors and were couched within their personal biographies and the internal sociology of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and its Faculty of Education, which were in turn embedded within domestic politics and the (evolving) position of Hong Kong and its universities within the region and internationally. These narratives paint in broad brushstrokes the interplay of personal, institutional, and global-local structures, which in turn shaped this research center in East Asia. The commentary contributes to analysis in the field on the role of research centers in the institutional and intellectual construction of the field of comparative education. It expands earlier work on this theme which took the professional societies of comparative education and university programmes as the units for analysis. Sociologically, CERC as a unit for analysis provides an example of the institutionalization of the field of comparative education. As Cowen contended, scholarly networks (journals, centers and societies) are important indicators of the "definition, demand, and supply of comparative education on a world basis". This paper shows that a research center like CERC can also be viewed as an intellectual field in microcosm. The article begins with a brief introduction of CERC. It lays down the conceptual lenses to be employed, which are Bourdieu's (1969, 1984a, 1984b) 'intellectual field' theory and Becher and Trowler's (2001) 'academic tribes and territories'. These lenses are applied to an analysis of the historical evolution of CERC as a form of social practice. A possible future trajectory for the Centre is then mapped out and the implications of this analysis for an understanding of the wider field of comparative education concludes the paper.
The article is devoted to disclosure of the characteristic features of Cossack pedagogy. Attention is focused on the fact that education in the context of the chosen topic is understood as a specially organized by interactions among educators and pupils to understand the spiritual and material culture of the nation, the formation of national consciousness and the achievement of spiritual unity of generations. The identity of Ukrainian national psychology in the article is determined by the basis of Cossack pedagogy. Among the factors, a large number of male children were identified, who constantly replenished the ranks of Sich's pupils, abandoned, or abducted in campaigns against рeople of other faiths, as well as the high cultural level of the Cossack state. The authors noted that education dynamically developed through the formation of Cossack schools of various types. The goal of these schools was to educate and form a diversified personality through the development of martial arts, combat training through dance, teaching singing, reading and writing, the God's law. Graduates of Sich schools could continue their studies at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy. It is stated that Cossack pedagogy synthesized humanism and deep democratism of the Ukrainian worldview, relied on national traditions, rich experience of self-government and the level of formation of justice in conventual and fraternal schools. The article focuses on the global significance of Cossack pedagogy. As the most famous example of Cossack martial arts, the authors highlighted the Cossack Hopak dance. It is indicated, that individual Cossacks by special exercises achieved an incredible effect when the body seemed to play (in this case, the enemy's painful hits were not felt). Cossacks were able to instantly concentrate internal energy in that part of their body where the enemy's blow was directed. Such phenomena are inherent in martial arts, for example, the art of Tibetan monks of the cathode and the "school of the iron shirt" in kung fu and karate.

The article intends to analyze the current situation in the field of educational reforms. The objective taken by the author is comparing the main values and the goals of The New Ukrainian School (Conceptual principles of secondary school reform) issued by Ministry of Education and Science as an answer to the challenges of the modern society and the Waldorf Education as an example of the good practice of an alternative education system. The article reveals the certain similarities of the two conceptual approaches that considered meeting the modern needs of education such as: child-centered ideas; partnerships in the school governance; academic freedom of a teacher; school autonomy etc. Analyzing the methods which could be learnt from the Waldorf Schools good practice to be taken into the consideration, the author draws the attention to the artistic teaching in the sense of originality, imagery and creativity; the structure of lessons when subjects are presented in the Main Lesson, usually over a block of about three weeks; phenomenological approach to science, which means that the teacher sets up an experiment and calls upon the pupils to observe carefully, ponder, and discuss what is happening — thus allowing them to discover the conclusion for themselves; approaches to the assessment and the others. On the example of Waldorf Education approach, the author comes to the conclusion that the different educational alternatives can serve as meaningful models for the renewal of mainstream education in Ukraine. The democratic society should keep the educational pluralism for those who still seek for an alternative.
In the article the author retraces the comparative education development in Ukraine under the influence of social and political landmarks with an attempt to prove its correlation with global comparative education direction in modern times. The dialectics-based analysis of comparative education allowed the author to talk about the existence of a certain way of this movement that conventionally was considered as a trajectory. An approach to consider the comparative education development through the lens of a conventional trajectory format made it possible to consider its movement as a line with plurality of points where an object resided from time to time in its movement; and to study the comparative education development as a movement in space and time under the influence of which this development took place. The comparative education development trajectory in Ukraine was analyzed during of Tsarist Russia, of the USSR and of independent Ukraine. The author makes conclusions that the comparative education development trajectory in independent Ukraine gradually approaching comparative education trajectory abroad owing to the openness of Ukraine to the world, its orientation to the Western vector of development. The author highlights the peculiarity of the Ukrainian comparative education today, i.e. dynamism that is explained by the relevance of this field of pedagogical science. Modernization of the national education, its progression towards the European and world educational space generates a demand for comparative education studies, actualizes its mission in Ukraine, intensifies the dynamic development of its methodological bases and infrastructure. The authors pays attention to the following methodological issues that remain polemical for comparative educators in Ukraine, i.e. selection of methods for research; comparative education delivery in relation to the national education demands in terms of the national education progression correlation with the world education trends/patterns of development; forecast for educational policy makers in Ukraine.
This conversation is an abbreviated version of the articles "Philosophyof education in the age of digital reason" (Peters & Jandrić, 2015a) and"Learning, creative col(labor)ation, and knowledge cultures" (Peters &Jandrić, 2015b). The conversation is preceded with a dedicated Open Letterto Ukrainian Philosophers of Education, co-authored by Michael Peters,Tina Besley, and Petar Jandrić. In the first part of the conversation, MichaelPeters discusses his philosophy of education in and for the age of digitalmedia and places his work in three interlocked themes: philosophy, politicalknowledge economy, and academic publishing. The second part of theconversation introduces the notion of "philosophy as pedagogy" and MichaelPeters discusses his philosophy of education in and for the age ofdigital postcolonialism, introduces Michael Peters' lifelong fascination withLudwig Wittgenstein, and analyses the advent of knowledge cultures and theirrelationships to human learning. The fourth part analyses the dynamics betweenopenness, capitalism, and anti-capitalism, and uses various recent examplesto link that dynamics to democracy. The fifth part of the conversation linkscybernetic capitalism to learning and knowledge production, and elaboratesthe movement of open education. The final, sixth part of the conversationexplores practical and epistemic consequences of peer-to-peer and wisdomof-the-group approaches. It shows that doing science is a privilege and aresponsibility, and points towards transformation of academic labor fromperpetuation of capitalism towards subversion.

The beginning of the 21st century has posed numerous challenges for the global population, including the growth of inequality both worldwide and in specific societies. Inequality in access to good education is also increasing. The debate on our understanding of what modern education should be like is broadening. It was this atmosphere of crisis in society and education in the UK after the 2008 global financial and economic downturn that galvanised the search for "critical hope" for the possibility of transforming formal and informal education. For the sake of this hope, representatives of critical pedagogy and popular education have united into a single group (Critical Pedagogy/Popular Education Group). Modernisation of the education system in Ukraine also requires unity of all those interested and involved in the education process. Thus, the UK's experience is of considerable interest. The possibility and rationale of combining these two areas into a single Critical Pedagogy/Popular Education Group in the UK has so far remained under-researched. The article studies theoretical preconditions and practical consequences of the combination of critical pedagogy and popular education in the UK. It is emphasised that the common basic principles and purpose, even with the background of theoretical debate, create unity in critical conditions, as it has occurred in the United Kingdom. Common for critical pedagogy and popular education are: the orientation towards the student's life experience; confidence in representation of politics in education; resistance against official hierarchies; development of critical thinking; and critical reflection on important subjects of public life with a view to improve it. However, critical pedagogy and popular education cannot be considered as one and the same. Popular education goes beyond the boundaries of traditional educational institutions with the aim of maximum adaptation to the experience of those who are studying. It aims to meet with the learners not only in the field of their experience, but also in the literal sense: in their homes, public spaces, and so on. Representatives of popular education also do not differentiate the positions of the teacher and the student, emphasising that their experience is of equal importance. Thus, popular education is based on a horizontal connection instead of the usual vertical hierarchies in the educational space. The process of popular education should correspond to the following general characteristics: its curriculum should be based on the concrete experience and material interests of people in the communities of resistance and struggle; its methods and practices of teaching are collective and focused on the group unlike individual learning and development; and it tries where possible to promote direct links between education and social actions. Critical pedagogy, like popular education, also focuses on the student's life experiences. Critical pedagogy offers a curriculum which focuses on the study of everyday life, informal and popular culture, historical models of governance, the subjectivity and identity of the individual. Thus, critical pedagogy interprets pedagogical reality as widely as possible, which allows its theorists to unite with popular education in order to solve social and transformational problems through socio-pedagogical practices. Critical Pedagogy / Popular Education Group has united theorists, political activists, artists and people's educators for the sake of progressive education in the purpose of social change. Common to them is the recognition of deep injustice, dehumanization and attacks on human dignity in many areas of life of the founders of the group, and the lives of those who are less privileged than the founders of the group. This group has connected those working in formal educational institutions to others beyond their boundaries. The aim of the group, as the founders emphasise in its program document, is to enable those involved in social transformation and political struggle in formal and informal education to integrate their knowledge, to develop pedagogy of involvement, life and hope in order to break down the barriers between informal and formal education and connect them again to make possible a progressive change; rethink university as a radically democratic social and political institution; change individualised atomisation, instrumental and fatalistic thinking proposed by neoliberalism under the slogan "there is no alternative"; combine activism outside the academic institutions and inside them; combine academic theory and practice in order to improve the world; use the experience of other institutions, movements, and groups with similar views; and develop an independent community of those working for social justice and a sustainable future. We emphasise that the union emerged for the sake of joint actions, while theoretical differences undoubtedly remain. In the opinion of the group's founders, a number of issues are still subject to debate. Among them is the refinement of the concept of practice – namely, whether there is a distinction between theory and practice, or whether academic theory, learning and teaching can be considered practices. There is also a need to clarify the understanding of the concept of community in the environment of blurring of face-to-face communities, and whether there is a need to develop a collective action strategy in the absence of community. There is even discussion around the basic vocabulary terms of the group, subversion and transformation. There is debate about the limits of the subversion and transformation of the dominant definitions of education and the forms of institutional power. In our opinion, the long list of discussion points proves that the process of integration was not a simple matter. The task of modernising the education system in Ukraine needs the same broad coalition, in the middle of which there will undoubtedly be a number of controversial theoretical issues. However, the common ground principles and purpose would allow us to unite in critical conditions, as it happened in the UK. The consideration of the theoretical intentions of critical pedagogy and popular education, the clarification of the underlying conditions and the purpose of their unification into a single group in the UK allows us to renew our vision of the place of education in public life.Key words: critical pedagogy, Critical Pedagogy/Popular Education Group, popular education, modernisation of education system. The article explores the conceptual foundations of partnership pedagogy and substantiates the importance of teacher interaction with the family of a junior student. It is determined that for modern society the orientation of the teacher's partnership is fundamentally important, because the process of interaction with the family is active and successful, provided that parents have a deep interest in raising a child, if they are partners. The subject-subject interaction "student-teacher-parent" involves the family in the educational process, through cooperation with the school. The teacher should be a friend to the child, a mentor and companion to the parents. It is characterized that the content of partnership pedagogy is a democratic and humane attitude to the child, providing him with the right to choose, to his own dignity, to respect, the right to be as he is, and not as the teacher wants to see him. Partnerships are formed where children and adults share common views and aspirations. Partnerships are formed where children and adults share common views and aspirations. The main task of partnership pedagogy is to overcome the inertia of thinking, the transition to a qualitatively new level of building relationships between participants in the educational process. This task is realized in the joint activities of teachers and students, teachers and parents, which involves mutual understanding, unity of interests and aspirations for the personal development of students. The framework conditions are summarized, which include six main types of parental activities that unite the family, school, and community in a partnership, including: parenting; communication; volunteering; home study; decision making; cooperation with the community. The principles of pedagogy of partnership according to the NUS Concept are determined: respect for the individual; friendliness and positive attitude; trust in relationships; dialogue – interaction – mutual respect; distributed leadership (proactivity, the right to choose and responsibility for it, the horizontality of connections); principles of social partnership (equality of the parties, voluntary commitment, mandatory implementation of agreements). It has been found that partnership pedagogy defines a truly democratic way of cooperation between teacher, child and family, which does not reject differences in their life experience, knowledge, but provides unconditional equality in the right to respect, trust, friendliness and mutual demands.
