This article examines Bertolt Brecht's career as a political intellectual in the early German Democratic Republic. It builds upon and goes beyond traditional interpretations that have tended to portray Brecht either as an intellectual traitor to the working classes he claimed to represent or as a hero who steadfastly championed the cause of a better socialism even against the political élites of the Socialist Unity Party. The author focuses on Brecht's responses to the cultural and political challenges within the political crucible of the early GDR including, especially, the crisis surrounding 17 June 1953. He sees Brecht as a specific type of German intellectual, one positioned between his exile experience in Scandinavia and the USA and his conviction that the future of Germany lay in a socialist society that could only be guaranteed by the Soviet Union after the collapse of the Third Reich. He argues that Brecht understood his creative and intellectual contribution as a commodity, in the revolutionizing sense of the term he had developed in 'The Threepenny Lawsuit'. As he adjusted to the changing realities of life in the fledgling communist state, Brecht learned how to exercise his commodity value in order to achieve his most important, and interrelated, goals: the construction of a new socialist culture and a permanent residence for the Berliner Ensemble. Along the way, Brecht made compromises — especially in 1953 — but he nevertheless contributed significantly to the cultural reconstruction of the GDR. This article thus joins the growing historical literature on cultural reconstruction in Germany and Europe after 1945. The article also contributes to the broader discussion about the role that intellectuals have played and should play in any modern society. In particular, the author argues that the critique of intellectuals which Brecht developed during this time around the notion of 'Tuismus' engages a model of the public intellectual in which the self-image of the artist and thinker as a socially and politically engaged person corresponded to the expectations of the public. Partisan without being bound to a party, independent of official institutions yet experienced in surviving within institutions, prepared to entertain risks and undertake unconventional experiments: this was how Brecht accommodated a world which he envisioned as changeable. His antagonistic worldview fed on crisis and found its most productive, creative impulse in the escalation of contradictions. For this he found plenty of material in the early years of the GDR and introduced some innovative strategies to give it form.

Tom Paulin is one of the major Northern Irish poets attempting to communicate a new perspective on contemporary Northern Ireland through the lens of different literary traditions. He chooses translation as a mode of discourse and seizes upon the differences and similarities of Northern Ireland and various European countries. Through the identification with foreign cultures, histories and political conflicts, Paulin challenges established interpretations of the Northern Irish Troubles. This article focuses on Paulin's versions of poems by Bertold Brecht, Arthur Rimbaud and Anna Akhmatova. It sets out to examine the deconstruction and redefinition of Irish identities through displacement. Taken out of the context of their culture of origin, the poems transformed by Paulin gain new meanings and new relevances against the background of theNorthern Irish conflict. Considering Paulin's versions of German, French and Russian poems, I will explore the role of poetry in a particular historical and cultural environment. In this context, the article is intended to shed light on the question why Paulin feels urged to strive for otherness and "elsewheres" outside Ireland in order to overcome the established political framework of Irish Nationalism and British Unionism.

Im folgenden werden ausschnittartig einige Äußerungen von Bertold Brecht, Max Horkheimer und Theodor W. Adorno wiedergegeben, um das Amerikabild aus der Sicht der Emigranten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zu verdeutlichen. Die USA galten allgemein als Symbol für Kapitalismus, Fortschritt und technische Innovation, aber auch für Krise, Unterdrückung und Ausbeutung. Dieses "schwarze Bild" von Amerika prägte nicht nur Brechts Sichtweise seiner Emigrationszeit, sondern beeinflußte auch wesentlich die Kritik der Kulturindustrie in der "Dialektik der Aufklärung" von Horkheimer und Adorno. Deshalb ist Alexander Joist den Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftstellern auf ihrer Suche nach dem Sinn des Todes nachgegangen: Welche philosophischen oder theologischen Todesdeutungen werden in der Lyrik des 20. Jahrhunderts und der Gegenwart verarbeitet? Diese Frage trägt der Autor an die Lyrik von Gottfried Benn, Werner Bergengruen, Thomas Bernhard, Bertold Brecht, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Ernst Jandl, Marie Luise Kaschnitz und vielen anderen heran, verfolgt sie insbesondere aber im Werk von Durs Grünbein, Johannes Kühn und Günter Kunert

Unter Berücksichtigung des politischen Umfelds wird am Verhalten von Schriftstellern gezeigt, wie sich Intellektuelle in Entscheidungssituationen positionieren, wie sich herausragende Literaten korrumpieren lassen, widerstehen oder einfach mitlaufen. Zu den bekanntesten Akteuren des Bandes gehören Bertold Brecht, Johannes R. Becher, Anna Seghers, Robert Havemann, Wolf Biermann, Wolfgang Harich, Walter Janka, Stefan Hermlin, Stefan Heym, Heiner Müller, Christa Wolf, Walter Ulbricht und Erich Honecker. Die literarisch-politischen Debatten der 50er-Jahre spielen eine Rolle, der Bitterfelder Weg, die Kafkakonferenz, die Ausbürgerung Biermanns und die Prenzlauer-Berg-Szene. Mittenzwei führt seine Untersuchung aber noch über 1989 bis ins Jahre 2000 fort, wobei viele seiner Bemerkungen zu den Ereignissen dieser Jahre streitbar sind. In the theatre scene of the 1930s in Spain, in addition to the traditional commercial theatre and the republican avant-garde of Las Misiones Pedagógicas or La Barraca, an alternative proposal emerged whose objectives went beyond the pedagogical and the artistic. Proletarian, or political theatre, linked to European theatrical avant-garde with Soviet roots, was inspired by the principles of Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator. They proposed, from a Marxist perspective, class struggle as means to achieve an alternative socialist model.
