Changing labels; the social context of social and cultural anthropology: a comparison of West and
East.

Cultural capital is usually defined as set of social features that provide individuals with social mobility and the possibility of changing their hierarchical position in systems such as wealth, power, prestige, education, and health. Cultural capital thus affects the processes of social promotion or degradation. It also includes social characteristics that allow horizontal mobility, that is, changes in social group membership. An individual's cultural capital includes his or her social origin, education, taste, lifestyle, style of speech, and dress.

Identity legitimacy is regarded as a key issue to understand the current post-communist world and to substantiate the identity recognition policy, that is a legitimate (for society) way of differentiation control. There are presented two ideal models of identity production: 1) based on essentialistic imperatives, and 2) close to constructivism in its various versions, like post-classical one. There are an a lyzed significant practices and figurative representations applied to identities.

Für ein bestimmtes Land entwickelte Instrumente müssen häufig modifiziert werden, wenn sie in einem anderen Land eingesetzt werden sollen. Die Verfasser zeigen, welche Probleme hierbei auftreten können und welche Pretest-Methoden und kognitiven Strategien bei der Bearbeitung solcher Probleme eingesetzt werden können. Zu den Fragen, die sich beim Testen von Instrumenten stellen, zählen die Vergleichbarkeit der Skalen, die Äquivalenz von Messverfahren und Probleme der Validität. Zu den möglichen Pretest-Techniken gehören das Experteninterview, kognitive Interviews, Zielgruppeninterviews, "konventionelle" Pretest-Techniken, Nachbefragungen von interviewten Personen sowie die Messung von Abweichungen vom "idealen" Interviewerverhalten. Die Verfasser schlagen ein prozessorientiertes Qualitätssicherungsverfahren für die Pretests vor. (ICE)

For many people, Wikipedia represents one of the primary sources of knowledge about foreign cultures. Yet, different Wikipedia language editions offer different descriptions of cultural practices. Unveiling diverging representations of cultures provides an important insight, since they may foster the formation of cross-cultural stereotypes, misunderstandings and potentially even conflict. In this work, we explore to what extent the descriptions of cultural practices in various European language editions of Wikipedia differ on the example of culinary practices and propose an approach to mine cultural relations between different language communities trough their description of and interest in their own and other communities' food culture. We assess the validity of the extracted relations using 1) various external reference data sources (i.e., the European Social Survey, migration statistics), 2) crowdsourcing methods and 3) simulations.

Bronisław Kasper Malinowski was a Polish anthropologist, ethnographer, and sociologist. Malinowski is often considered as a pioneer in the ethnographic field research methods, such as participant observation, interviews, and statistics. His studies focused on beliefs and forms of social organization. Malinowski is often recognized as one of the founders of modern social anthropology and functionalism.

Der Autor setzt sich mit den theoretischen Ansätzen des Soziologen Samuel N. Eisenstadt und den empirischen Zugangsweisen von John Meyer und anderen neo-institutionalistischen Forschern zu den "multiplen Modernitäten" in der heutigen Weltgesellschaft kritisch auseinander. Er stellt zunächst die Gemeinsamkeiten der beiden Ansätze heraus, die trotz der unterschiedlichen Konzeption von Modernität bei der kulturellen Konstruktion, dem politischem Entwurf und dem universalen Bezug auf die Moderne bestehen. Er identifiziert in einem zweiten Schritt die blinden Flecken in beiden Theorien und entwickelt Vorschläge für eine zukünftige Forschungsagenda, die die Stärken und Schwächen beider Ansätze miteinander kombiniert. Er plädiert vor diesem Hintergrund für eine stärkere vergleichende Forschung über die kulturellen Konstruktionen des Säkularismus und seine institutionellen Ausformungen in der Weltpolitik. (ICI)

Genau wie Telefongespräche oder face-to-face-Interviews stellen Telefoninterviews Sprechakte dar, die kultur- und sprachspezifischen Normen unterliegen. Telefoninterviews über sprachliche und kulturelle Grenzen hinweg müssen diese unterschiedlichen Normen des Sprachgebrauchs berücksichtigen. Übersetzte Fragestellungen müssen den Normen der Zielsprache entsprechen, standardisierte Übersetzungen reichen hier nicht aus. Eine zu wörtliche Übersetzung von Fragestellungen kann bei Untersuchungsprojekten, die Sprach- und Kulturgrenzen überschreiten, paradoxerweise die Vergleichbarkeit der Ergebnisse beeinträchtigen. Unterschiedliche Sprachnormen betreffen die Eröffnung eines Gesprächs, Frage- und Antwortsequenzen sowie Themenwechsel. (ICE)

Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist der Einfluss soziokultureller Faktoren auf die Entwicklung des modernen Staates. Ziel ist es, die Grundannahmen des Historischen Materialismus als allgemeiner Theorie der sozialen Entwicklung zu überprüfen. Der Verfasser setzt sich dementsprechend mit der Frage auseinander, ob eine Erklärung der Entstehung des Staates durch Entwicklungsprozesse in primitiven Gesellschaften möglich ist. Er erläutert zunächst die soziologische Konzeption der "sozialen Formation" und zeigt, welche Bedeutung sie für die Erklärung der Entstehung von Staaten hat. Er fragt vor diesem Hintergrund nach dem ideellen Element der Existenz sozialer Beziehungen im Denken und zeigt, dass dieses ideelle Element konstitutiv für staatliche Strukturen ist. Die Frage nach dem Ursprung kognitiver Strukturen im realen gesellschaftlichen Leben führt zu einer theoretischen Konzeption, die die kulturellen Ursprünge und die historische Entstehung des traditionalen Staates erklären kann. "In survey research many decisions are made in order to design an instrument for data collection. These choices have to do with the formulation of the question, the response categories, the instruction, the sample, the mode of data collection, etc. Each of these choices can lead to different errors (Sudman and Bradburn, 1974; Belson, 1981; Schuman and Presser, 1981; Dijkstra and Van der Zouwen, 1982; Andrews, 1984; Molenaar, 1986; Billiet et al., 1986; Groves, 1989; Alwin and Krosnick, 1991, and Scherpenzeel and Saris, 1997) and consequently to incomparability of results with respect to estimates of correlations and effect parameters across studies and also across countries. It is common knowledge that cross-cultural comparison can only be made if the measurement procedures are completely the same. In this study, we want to argue that this requirement is not enough. We will show that the results can also differ if the same procedures have been used because of differences in measurement errors in the different countries. We therefore propose a procedure to correct for measurement error, in order to make comparisons across countries with respect to correlations and regression coefficients. To correct for measurement error, we have chosen an approach that can be used by every researcher involved in social science research. This in particular is why we advocate this approach, even though, from a methodological point of view, more suitable approaches are available. We avoid using these methods because one purpose of this project is that we want to demonstrate a procedure for the correction of measurement error which can be used in any study, once prior methodological research is done. We begin with a discussion of the problems connected with measurement error in comparative survey research and then we describe the solution we have chosen for these problems. All examples given are based on the satisfaction studies done in the context of a methodological, comparative research project involving 13 language areas." (author's abstract)
