Kosovych V. M. Draft Law of Ukraine on Copyright and Related Rights: legal and technical analysis. – Article. The article is devoted to the study of the possibilities of improving the mechanism of legislative support of intellectual property law in Ukraine, based on the need to fulfill the international obligations of our state to protect copyright. The object of analysis is the draft Law of Ukraine on Copyright and Related Rights, submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for consideration (registration number 5552-4 dated 09.06.2021). It is stated that the draft Law of Ukraine on Copyright and Related Rights (the Draft) is an important step in the development of the domestic legal framework in this area of relations. Legal and technical evaluation of the Draft gave grounds to note its high quality and overall compliance with the requirements of rule-drafting technique. At the same time, a detailed study of the articles of the Draft allowed to offer a number of recommendations for its improvement through the prism of the peculiarities of rule-making tools. These are the legal definitions used in the Project, the general requirements for the content, its linguistic and structural characteristics. It is proposed to amend the preamble of the Draft, which in fact outlines the subject of legal regulation of the law. The preamble is the introductory part of the law, which can define the historical preconditions and justify the need for its adoption, explain the purpose, outline the main tasks facing it, and so on. The preamble of the law cannot repeat the content of its other structural components. It is pointed out that Article 1 of the Draft provides reasonable definitions of special terms, for example: cable retransmission (paragraph 21); camcording (paragraph 22); cardsharing (paragraph 23); potpourri (paragraph 34); hosting service provider (paragraph 35); reprographic reproduction (reproduction) (paragraph 46); phonogram (paragraph 60); digital content (paragraph 63). Attention is drawn to some cases of noncompliance with the requirement that the wording of definitions should be short. For example, the definition of the term «broadcasting» seems too broad. In fact, it defines another term – «encoded signal». Several definitions do not follow the rule that the definition should not contain terms used in the defined term. The necessity of inclusion of the relevant international agreements of Ukraine in the list of normative legal acts, forming the legislation of Ukraine on copyright and related rights, specified in Art. 2 of the Draft, is justified. A high level of compliance with structural rules in the Draft was noted. Recommendations for more detailed numbering of individual articles of the Project, in particular, Part 10 of Art. 4, which combines different regulations within one part (without highlighting individual items, in the form of paragraphs), are proposed. It is concluded that this study is a contribution to the process of scientific and expert evaluation of an important bill and can be used in practice. ; В. М. Стаття присвячена дослідженню можливостей удосконалення механізму законодавчого забезпечення права інтелектуальної власності в Україні з огляду на необхідність виконання нашою державою своїх міжнародних зобов'язань щодо захисту авторських прав. Об'єктом аналізу вибрано поданий на розгляд Верховної Ради України проєкт Закону України «Про авторське право і суміжні права» (реєстраційний номер 5552-4 від 9 червня 2021 р.). Констатовано, що проєкт Закону України «Про авторське право і суміжні права» (Проєкт) є вагомим кроком у розвитку вітчизняної нормативно-правової бази у вказаній сфері відносин. Юридико-технічна оцінка Проєкту дала підстави визначити його високу якість та загалом відповідність вимогам й правилам нормопроєктної техніки. Водночас детальне вивчення норм Проєкту дозволило запропонувати низку рекомендацій щодо його вдосконалення крізь призму особливостей нормотворчого інструментарію. Йдеться про використані в Проєкті правові дефініції, загальні вимоги до змісту, його мовні та структурні характеристики. Запропоновано внести зміни до преамбули Проєкту, в якій фактично окреслено предмет правового регулювання закону. Преамбула – вступна частина закону, в якій можуть визначатись історичні передумови й обґрунтовуватись необхідність його прийняття, роз'яснюватись мета, окреслюватись основні завдання, які стоять перед ним тощо. Преамбула закону не може повторювати зміст інших його структурних складників. Вказано на те, що у ст. 1 Проєкту надається обґрунтоване визначення спеціальних термінів, наприклад: кабельна ретрансляція (п. 21 ч. 1 ст. 1); камкординг (п. 22 ч. 1 ст. 1); кардшейрінг (п. 23 ч. 1 ст. 1); попурі (п. 34 ч. 1 ст. 1); постачальник послуг хостингу (п. 35 ч. 1 ст. 1); репрографічне відтворення (репродукування) (п. 46 ч. 1 ст. 1); фонограма (п. 60 ч. 1 ст. 1)цифровий контент (п. 63 ч. 1 ст. 1). Звернено увагу на недотримання в окремих випадках вимоги, згідно з якою формулювання визначень має бути коротким. Наприклад, дефініція терміна «ефірне мовлення» видається надто об'ємною. У ній фактично закладено визначення ще одного терміна – «закодований сигнал». У кількох визначеннях не дотримано правило, за яким дефініція не має містити терміни, які використовуються в понятті, що визначається. Аргументовано необхідність включення до переліку нормативно-правових актів, що входять до законодавства України про авторське право і суміжні права, вказаного у ст. 2 Проєкту, відповідні міжнародні договори України. Зазначено високий рівень дотримання у Проєкті структурних правил. Висунено рекомендації щодо детальнішої нумерації окремих статей Проєкту, зокрема ч. 10 ст. 4, в якій у межах однієї частини (без виділення окремих пунктів, у формі абзаців) об'єднуються різні нормативно-правові приписи. Підсумовано, що вказане дослідження є певним внеском у процес науково-експертного оцінювання важливого законопроєкту і може застосовуватись на практиці.
The recent political events in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Tunisia (2011) have confirmed the key role of social networks (SNSs), as well as online political news in supporting citizens with their self-determination. Furthermore, "changes in the media landscape present new challenges for scholars interested in the relationship between the media and civil society. Additionally, the explosion of the Internet that started in advanced democracies and has spread through much of the globe provides new and unexplored pathways for communication. Moreover, the inclusion of the Internet in the media environment raises new questions for citizens, politicians, researchers, journalists, and government" (Oates, Owen & Gibson, 2006, p. 1). This study looks at the relationships between young people's exposure to political news on the Internet and their political awareness. It develops and applies an index for political participation composed of several variables measuring political interest, discussion, knowledge, and participation. The survey among students in both countries was administered in Arabic and German, while the master questionnaire was developed in English. The survey was conducted between April and June 2010 in Egypt at Minia University and in Germany at Technical university of Dresden. The sample size was 1000 (500 in each country) students from several departments representing different academic fields: three departments of Engineering, three departments of Humanities and Social Science, and finally three departments of Natural Science. The study's main research question was: "What is the impact of students' exposure to political news on the Internet on their political awareness and civic activities?" The researcher started from the hypothesis that heavy use of political news on the Internet is positively related to political awareness. A further research question aimed at gauging the role of intervening variables such as gender and field of study for the relationship between the use of political news on the Internet and the level of political awareness. Results show that there is a positive relationship between using political online news and political awareness. [ES] En la sociedad del conocimiento, los motores del progreso son la educación, la formación y la información; y, en este proceso, el uso educativo de los medios de comunicación y las TIC se vuelve prioritario. La realidad del contexto actual compromete a varios actores (estado, gobiernos locales, universidades) al desarrollo urgente de modelos educativos innovadores que tomen ventaja de las oportunidades que ofrecen las tecnologías para democratizar el conocimiento, y fomentar la equidad e inclusión social de los grupos con mayor desventaja socio-económica. La Educomunicación, reconocida desde la década de los 70 por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO), es asumida como un espacio intercultural que fomenta la construcción de aprendizajes en la formación de ciudadanos críticos, creativos y solidarios. Responde a las necesidades y demandas de la población de los sectores urbanos y rurales que enfrentan situaciones de pobreza, exclusión, desempleo y acceso limitado a una educación pertinente y de calidad. Esto es posible porque la Educomunicación parte de una modalidad educativa no formal de impacto masivo y alta calidad técnica, cuyo objetivo central es mejorar la calidad de vida de la población y su entorno, a través de programas de educación para adultos. Por este motivo, los formatos educomunicacionales, ya sean radiales, televisivos, o digitales, se diseñan con el propósito de favorecer el crecimiento personal y comunitario, a través de propuestas metodológicas y pedagógicas, que permitan abordar el conocimiento y su aplicación con el fin de lograr un impacto favorable en las actitudes y prácticas cotidianas. En América Latina, este proceso tiene sus raíces en los escritos de Paulo Freire (1963) sobre la educación liberadora, y Mario Kaplún (1976) en sus aportes a la educomunicación como generadora de procesos, que parte de las necesidades de la comunidad, donde el sujeto es protagonista de su propia historia e interactúa para convertirse en perceptor activo, creativo y propositivo de sus propios mensajes. En este contexto, varias son las experiencias vividas a lo largo del continente americano. Entre ellas se encuentra la radio Yaraví en Arequipa (Perú), con el programa nocturno de acompañamiento y cercanía a los privados de la libertad; este programa realizó un trabajo educativo en ciudadanía, participación comunitaria, derechos humanos y convivencia social. De igual forma, cabe destacar el trabajo que lleva haciendo desde hace más de 20 años Radio Latacunga, en Ecuador, focalizando su labor en la recuperación de la gramática y el uso de la lengua kichwa. En este caso, el programa acompaña a las comunidades campesinas e indígenas en sus luchas reivindicativas y exigibilidad de sus derechos, además ha contribuido a la formación política de los líderes de la comunidad. Estas iniciativas contribuyen a la educación no formal en América Latina, que sigue siendo una de las regiones más desiguales del mundo, donde los niveles de pobreza son elevados, sin lograr las transformaciones sociales y económicas que plantea la modernidad. Existen aún evidentes diferencias e injusticias que han caracterizado las condiciones de vida principalmente de las mujeres en ámbitos como la familia, la educación, la política o el trabajo. Las mencionadas circunstancias han ejercido una continua presión para que las naciones y organismos internacionales busquen soluciones que logren reducirlas efectivamente. Así lo recoge el planteamiento de la Agenda 2030 para el desarrollo sostenible de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (UNESCO, 2015), que establece en su objetivo cinco, alcanzar la igualdad de género y empoderar a todas las mujeres y a las niñas. A lo largo de la historia, las mujeres han sido relegadas exclusivamente a las actividades domésticas, encargándose del cuidado de los niños y los adultos mayores que conforman la familia. Las condiciones de pobreza y el desempleo han perjudicado mayoritariamente al género femenino y, en mayor medida, a las que pertenecen a los pueblos y nacionalidades indígenas y afrodescendientes, evidenciándose este hecho con mayor afectación en los países en vía de desarrollo, donde la incorporación de las mujeres a la actividad económica-profesional es baja en relación con los países del primer mundo. En este caso, no se valora el beneficio que suponen las mujeres para toda la sociedad y su contribución a la economía de los países, pues, el mercado laboral continúa marcando las diferencias salariales con sus compañeros. La percepción de que las mujeres carecen de ciertas aptitudes para desempeñar algunas profesiones o trabajos supone, también, un ejemplo de discriminación de género, que afecta de muchas maneras a la autoestima femenina y a la interacción social. Uno de los factores que contribuyó evidentemente a disminuir las desigualdades, fue la incorporación de la mujer a la educación, aunque los hombres siguen predominando en el mundo educativo formal. Respecto al acceso a la educación, cabe señalar las diferencias entre el aprendizaje formal e informal. El primero se refiere a lo que ocurre en el sistema educativo y de capacitación de un país. El aprendizaje formal, generalmente, se organiza como educación a tiempo completo, como un proceso continuo con etapas definidas. Esta estructura rígida es la que limita el acceso de las mujeres a la educación, especialmente, las que habitan en el sector rural de Ecuador, que según los datos del último Censo Nacional Agropecuario (2000) son 2.9 millones. A esto se suman los roles tradicionalmente asignados en el campo y la alta probabilidad de embarazo. El aprendizaje no formal, por su parte, se caracteriza por una elección voluntaria en cualquier organización con fines educativos y de capacitación. Las personas de todas las edades pueden participar en la educación no formal que se ofrece a través de cursos, talleres, seminarios, etc. Se convierte en una alternativa para las mujeres que están dedicadas a las actividades de cuidado y/o de emprendimiento. En este sentido, la gama de iniciativas y programas que han adoptado el título "no formal" son muchas y variadas. Incluyen ámbitos como liderazgo, agroecología, derechos humanos, comunicación popular y comunitaria, alfabetización y educación básica para personas adultas y jóvenes. Por las razones descritas, la educación debe ser considerada como un factor clave para alcanzar la equidad de género, así como un medio para superar la marginación social, profesional y económica, con miras a reducir las brechas de pobreza. En este tejido social, como respuesta a la necesidad de mejorar las condiciones de vida de las mujeres que se dedican a las actividades económicas productivas, a través de emprendimientos, se desarrolló la tesis doctoral: Modelo de Educomunicación Intercultural para la Formación de Emprendedoras (MEIFE) de la Provincia de Imbabura, amparados en la Constitución de la República del Ecuador (CRE) vigente, que incluye en su articulado, la categoría de "interculturalidad" como reivindicación y principio de los pueblos y nacionalidades del país, por una sociedad justa. Esta propuesta utiliza un marco de referencia particular, ajustado a la realidad de las emprendedoras de la Provincia de Imbabura, para impulsar el desarrollo social y económico familiar, local y regional, a través del desarrollo humano y ético que impulse la equidad, la libertad, la democracia y el pensamiento crítico. Cabe destacar, por la repercusión que este hecho ha tenido en el trabajo que se presenta, que durante la ejecución de esta investigación se desató la pandemia de la Covid-19, con graves implicaciones en el ámbito social, económico y educativo a nivel mundial. Esta situación obligó a replantear los modelos de desarrollo de la humanidad, y dio paso a una nueva normalidad que inesperadamente favoreció a las actividades económicas locales, en cumplimiento con las normas sanitarias establecidas, entre ellas, el confinamiento y la prohibición de asistir a lugares concurridos. Esta circunstancia consolidó la propuesta que se hace en esta Tesis Doctoral ya que, por un lado, el número de personas que incursionaron en iniciativas económicas independientes (emprendedores) aumentó considerablemente, como respuesta a los niveles de desempleo generados por los efectos de la pandemia; creando una alta demanda de conocimiento y formación específica. Y, por otro lado, la aceptación y la adaptación de la población a métodos alternativos de aprendizaje (educación no presencial). Para alcanzar la sostenibilidad de esta propuesta académica, la Universidad Técnica del Norte ejecutará el programa de educación no formal "Emprendamos" que hemos desarrollado, a través de sus medios de comunicación, radio y televisión universitaria, y plataformas digitales de libre acceso. Se contempla su implementación, en español, kichwa (lengua ancestral) y lengua de señas para lograr una mayor admisión entre las interesadas, construyendo una cultura de paz y convivir armónico.

In this article, I will explore the potential of a gold-backed cryptocurrency as a replacement for the US dollar and examine the various obstacles that make its widespread adoption unlikely – at least for the time being.The global advantages of a gold-backed cryptocurrencyThe concept of a gold-backed cryptocurrency revolves around combining the historical allure and stability of gold with the efficiency and accessibility of blockchain technology. Unlike traditional fiat currencies, which are not backed by any physical assets, a gold-backed cryptocurrency would be intrinsically linked to a reserve of physical gold held in secure vaults.Blockchain technology, the backbone of cryptocurrencies, offers transparency and accountability. Each transaction recorded on the blockchain is immutable, ensuring trust and reducing the risk of fraudulent activities. Each digital coin issued would represent a specified amount of gold, making it a uniquely stable store of value that offers protection against the future inflation/debasement of fiat currencies (to say nothing of the geopolitical uncertainties surrounding the dollar and its recent weaponisation).This stability would also come in stark contrast to the extreme volatility of other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, thereby attracting investors who seek a reliable and secure store of wealth. The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid Pamilya) remains as the main social protection strategy of the government with its objective of breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty by helping poor households invest in the health, and education of their children. Previous impact evaluation studies of the program show that the program has been successful in keeping children healthy and in school. The third impact evaluation (IE Wave 3) aims to reassess the program impact on short term and intermediate outcomes on health, education, household welfare and other socio-behavioral domains. The 3rd wave evaluation employs regression discontinuity design (RDD) to analyze program impact by comparing treatment (Pantawid beneficiaries) and comparison households (non-Pantawid beneficiaries) within specific bandwidths of distance from the poverty thresholds that determine program eligibility. In general, the results of the evaluation indicate that the program still shows desirable impacts on most of the target education and health outcomes of children and pregnant women. The results also show positive impacts on household welfare such as income and food security; large positive impacts on community participation, and awareness of basic means to mitigate vulnerabilities such as disaster preparedness among adults; and strong impact on "grit" or determination of children. Nevertheless, some of the results are inconsistent with previous evaluations such as the negative impact on some nutrition outcomes, inconsistencies in the utilization of maternal health care services, and lack of significant reduction in child labor incidence. Recommendations put forward include strengthening and improving of program monitoring and enforcement of health conditions, further study on the factors driving some of the unexpected results, corresponding adjustment in the policies or incentives that the program provides—particularly in terms of reevaluating the value of the cash grant and taking advantage of the positive program impacts on the behavior of children and adults as a model and/or platform for other interventions.
This dissertation explores media practices in and of refugee camps. In the wake of forced migration becoming ever more digitized both in its experiences and its governance, this thesis historicizes media practices in refugee camps as a space of the refugee regime. In various historical contexts in Germany after 1945, this study analyses archival material in order to trace media practices in the making of refugee camps' space, time, and politics, and thereby provides historical insights into circularities, ruptures, and continuities of media practices and their entanglement with being and being made a refugee. Refugee camps spatialize the modern "refugee regime" (Betts, 2010) as a hegemonic mode of governing forced migration. Being paradoxical tools of both shelter and humanitarian relief and at the same time segregation and exclusion, refugee camps are "heterotopian and heterochronic spaces" (Foucault, 1967/1997): othered, paradoxical spaces and times, simultaneously inside and outside of society, a temporary limbo, withholding outcasts from nation-based, bordered societies while at the same time constituting these very societies. The holistic concept of media practices (Couldry, 2004) describes how social practices of mediation and communication enable, shape, and condition socialities and materialities of the refugee camp: media as enabling environments, technologies, and techniques (Peters, 2015) construct, negotiate, and make the camp's heterotopian and heterochronic condition. By way of media practices, camp residents, staff and authorities, NGOs and governments as well as activists, establish, maintain or alter the social relations of the camp heterotopia and heterochronia. Relating to the space, time, and politics of the camp, these media practices are conceptualized as heterotopian, heterochronic and heteropolitical media practices, which shape and negotiate the differentiation, other-ness and paradoxical inclusions and exclusions from time and space, which refugee camps thrive on. Archival records from the post-war period of ca. 1945 to 1960, and the 1980s and 1990s, provide traces of historical media practices from camp residents, authorities within the refugee regime, and activists and other communities. Three analytical chapters explore heterotopian, heterochronic and heteropolitical media practices. Firstly, heterotopian camp space is produced, governed and controlled through media practices around media infrastructure, such as architecture, media-technological equipment, and administrative practices. Secondly, refugee camps are heterochronic limbos with multiple ruptured temporalities that are managed through media practices of memory and witnessing. Thirdly, heteropolitical media practices are forms of altering and challenging the othering politics of the camp space and camp time through forms of resistance and protest. This thesis re-evaluates historical media practices in and of the refugee camp from the perspective of the digitized refugee regime and experience, and showcases trajectories of media practices that (regardless of media technological environment) have been employed in projects of negotiating and coping with being and being made a refugee. This thesis thereby challenges a rhetoric of newness around digital technologies and contributes theoretically, epistemologically, and empirically to the study of media and migration. By pointing out the complicitness and existentiality of media practices in making, differentiating, and relating space, time, and politics in bordered states, the thesis ultimately argues for an approach to media studies from the margins to help understand how seemingly peripheral spaces mirror and co-construct media practices in society more generally. ; Denna avhandling utforskar mediepraktiker i och som flyktingläger. I kölvattnet av en allt mer digitaliserad tvångsmigration, dess reglering och de erfarenheter den ger upphov till, avser denna avhandling att historisera mediepraktiker i flyktingläger. Studien analyserar arkivmaterial ur olika historiska kontexter i Tyskland efter 1945, för att spåra mediepraktikers roll i skapandet av flyktinglägrens tid, rum och politik. Därmed ger avhandlingen en historisk inblick i mediepraktikers cirkulering, avbrott och kontinuitet och på vilket sätt de är en del av tillståndet av att vara och bli gjord till flykting. Flyktingläger förrumsligar den moderna "flyktingregimen" (Betts, 2010) som ett hegemoniskt sätt att styra och reglera tvångsmigration. Flyktingläger är paradoxala verktyg som ger skydd och humanitär hjälp samtidigt som de segregerar och stänger ute. Därför är flyktingläger att betrakta som "heterotopiska och heterokroniska rum" (Focault, 1967/1997). De är "det andra", motsägelsefulla i tid och rum, på samma gång innanför och utanför samhället; en tillfällig limbo som håller kvar de som blivit utestängda från nationalstaternas avgränsade samhällen samtidigt som de på samma gång skapar och bekräftar dessa samhällen. Teoretiskt utgår avhandlingen ifrån mediepraktiker, ett holistiskt begrepp som utgår ifrån mediering och kommunikation som sociala praktiker (Couldry 2004), som möjliggör, formar och upprätthåller flyktinglägret både socialt och materiellt. Den utgår också från medier som möjliggörande miljöer, tekniker och teknologier (Peters, 2015) som konstruerar, förhandlar och skapar lägrets heterotopiska och heterokroniska tillstånd. Mediepraktiker hos lägerboende, personal, myndigheter, organisationer och aktivister etablerar, underhåller och alternerar de sociala relationer som utgör flyktinglägret som heterotopi och heterokroni. Genom att relatera dessa praktiker till lägrets tid, rum och politik, konceptualiseras flyktinglägrets mediepraktiker som heterotopiska, heterokroniska och heteropolitiska mediepraktiker, som formar och förhandlar den differentiering, annan-het och de motsägelsefulla in- och exkluderingar i tid och rum som utgör flyktinglägrets förutsättningar. Arkivmaterial har samlats in från tiden omkring 1945 till 1960 samt från 1980- och 1990-talet. Materialet har samlats in från institutionella arkiv samt community-arkiv som tillhandahåller spår av historiska mediepraktiker från lägerboende och myndigheter, liksom från aktivister och andra gemenskaper och organisationer. Tre analyskapitel utforskar heterotopiska, heterokroniska och heteropolitiska mediepraktiker i flyktingläger i Tyskland efter 1945. Analysen visar för det första att heterotopiskt lägerutrymme produceras, regleras och kontrolleras genom mediepraktiker som rör medieinfrastruktur, till exempel arkitektur, medieteknisk utrustning och administration. För det andra är flyktinglägret ett heterokroniskt limbo med avbrutna temporaliteter, som hanteras genom mediepraktiker som minne och vittesmål. För det tredje innebär heteropolitiska mediepraktiker, i former av motstånd och protester, en möjlig förändring och utmaning av den politik som konstitutionerar lägret som "det andra". Denna avhandling omvärderar historiska mediepraktiker i och som flyktingläger, med utgångspunkt i en digitaliserad flyktingregim och de erfarenheter den ger upphov till. Avhandlingen visar på genealogier av mediepraktiker som, oavsett medieteknologisk miljö, har använts i olika situationer för att förhandla och hantera ett tillstånd av att vara och att göras till flykting. Därmed utmanar avhandlingen den retorik som framställer digitala teknologier som nya, och bidrar teoretiskt, empiriskt och epistemologiskt till fältet för medie- och migrationsstudier. Genom att peka på mediepraktikers roll i skapandet, särskiljningen och sammanbindningen av tid, rum och politik i gränsbaserade stater, argumenterar avhandlingen för en medievetenskap från marginalerna för att bidra till en förståelse för hur till synes perifera platser speglar och med-konstruerar mediepraktiker i samhället i stort.
Uno de los objetivos centrales de la Revista del IICE es poner en conocimiento de la comunidad educativa los avances actuales de la producción científica del campo de la investigación, elaborada tanto en nuestro instituto como en otros ámbitos académicos. Para ello, resulta necesario ampliar el espectro de posibles lectores mediante la renovación de su formato editorial. De ahí que la edición del número 30 de la revista inaugura un nuevo formato digital, que se suma a la edición impresa, lo cual representa un avance muy importante respecto de aquellos objetivos.En el mismo sentido tenemos el agrado de informar a los lectores que hemos actualizado la incorporación de la revista al catálogo LATINDEX, link http://www.latindex.unam.mx/buscador/ficRev.html?opcion=2&folio=2897, iniciando así el proceso de indexación.Por otra parte, seguimos para este número manteniendo la inclusión de un dossier, ya que permite presentar un estado de avance de una temática específica y de alto grado de interés en el campo educativo. Teniendo en cuenta la relevancia del problema de la formación y el trabajo docente, y la consiguiente producción de investigaciones en el campo educativo, hemos decidido incluir en este número, un dossier sobre Formación y trabajo docente. Se trata de un tema que presenta una amplia diversidad de enfoques y perspectivas que van desde la consideración de las políticas de regulación del trabajo docente hasta los problemas específicos como el de construir una pedagogía para la formación y el desarrollo profesional de los docentes.Como queda dicho, los artículos del dossier atienden a esta diversidad temática desde la perspectiva de la investigación y el estudio sobre la formación y el trabajo docente. Desde esta perspectiva, los análisis no pueden realizarse al margen de las condiciones efectivas en las que los maestros y profesores desarrollan cotidianamente su tarea. El dossier inicia con una entrevista a Phillippe Meirieu, realizada por Alejandra Birgin. En la misma, el entrevistado plantea, entre otras cuestiones interesantes, que la democratización de los sistemas educativos ha implicado una importante renovación de la problemática de la formación docente, reflejando el deseo de las sociedades de que el saber sea accesible a todos y no quede reservado a un pequeños núcleos o élites. A lo largo de la entrevista, el autor destaca principalmente la importancia de asumir un proyecto y una ética en la definición del docente, basada en el principio de que todos los alumnos son educables. El artículo de Daniel Suárez, aporta el enfoque de las narrativas pedagógicas como instancia de mediación entre la investigación educativa y la formación docente, proponiendo como dispositivo de formación una actividad de elaboración conjunta de narrativas, entre docentes e investigadores. El artículo de Marta Sipes enfoca la formación docente para la educación especial, haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de deconstruir las representaciones sociales y las concepciones médicas acerca de los niños con dificultades. Estas concepciones perfilan el modo de concebir las prácticas, formando en los futuros profesionales un concepto acerca del sujeto alumno focalizado en las deficiencias del mismo. La autora subraya dramáticas derivaciones prácticas en la formación, entre ellas la desvalorización del acto propiamente pedagógico.Por su parte, Andrea Alliaud presenta un recorrido por los aportes de diversos autores tomando como eje de la reflexión la pregunta acerca de cómo tienen que formarse los docentes para poder enseñar en las condiciones y circunstancias actuales.Nicolás Arata aporta desde la historia de la educación argentina, un análisis del ideario pedagógico de Manuel Belgrano, a partir del rescate de una variedad de elementos tomados de sus escritos sobre la educación: el peso otorgado a la formación de hombres industriosos y la preocupación por la educación práctica de los artesanos, destacando que estos escritos se inscriben en el marco de las reformas borbónicas, en el que tuvo lugar un proceso de revalorización de la formación manual.En el siguiente artículo Alejandro Vassiliades se propone dar cuenta de algunos avances de una investigación en curso orientada a aproximarse a un aspecto de las regulaciones del trabajo de enseñar: la configuración de posiciones docentes frente a situaciones de desigualdad educativa. La discusión teórica que presenta da elementos para justificar la construcción de la categoría de posición docente. Finalmente se detiene en la producción y circulación de significados acerca del trabajo docente, tanto desde instancias estatales como desde las prácticas de los profesores.El artículo de Nora Goggi comienza con el planteo de una serie de preguntas acerca de la situación de primer empleo de los docentes de educación infantil. Entre otras cuestiones destaca especialmente la relación con el propio saber, con el saber de los otros, con la cultura de la institución y consigo mismo en el camino de construcción de la propia identidad profesional.Finalmente, el dossier cierra con el artículo de Lea Vezub propone un recorrido a partir del análisis de fuentes secundarias, por las nuevas tendencias de desarrollo profesional docente, donde el acompañamiento pedagógico a docentes principiantes ocupa un lugar central. Se presenta una propuesta de propuesta que abarca cuatro ámbitos principal sobre los cuales enfocar la tarea y formación de los mentores, tutores o asesores.Los restantes artículos comprenden otras temáticas, por fuera del dossier. Liliana Cohen analiza las condiciones de organización de la actividad de enseñanza y las intervenciones didácticas que favorecen la actividad metalingüística de los niños sobre diferentes niveles del lenguaje escrito.Por otra parte, María Paula Pierella propone explorar las visiones de estudiantes universitarios de la carrera de física de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario sobre la autoridad de los profesores, como una cuestión problemática en la escena pedagógica contemporánea.Por último, el artículo de María Soledad Manrique tuvo por objetivo explorar la transformación en las prácticas de lectura de cuentos de un grupo de maestras de una institución educativa de la provincia de Buenos Aires, que atiende a niños en situación de pobreza. Luego, analiza un dispositivo de formación consistente en un taller experiencial focalizado.Esperamos que este número pueda contribuir a la consolidación de la investigación educativa en nuestro ámbito académico y abra el debate y el intercambio de ideas a partir de los artículos aquí publicados.José A. Materiality has recently claimed centre stage in architectural discourse and practice, yet its critical meaning is ever receding. Tropes like material honesty, digital materiality, material responsiveness and dematerialisation mark out an interdisciplinary field where scientific fact and artistic experimentation interact, and where what in fact constitutes materiality and immateriality is constantly re-imagined. Interstices14 invites contributions that address the thematic strands: Immateriality; Atmosphere+Experience; Interactivity; Material Politics; Material Technology+Aesthetics; Material Referents. Immateriality: As a reaction to developments in science, materiality came under scrutiny with the emergence of nineteenth century German aesthetics (Vischer, Schmarsow) and the early avant-garde projects (Lissitzky, van Doesburg). Initiating an epistemic shift in art and architecture, these works pointed point to the connection between the concrete material properties of objects and their interaction with the inhabitant through psycho-physiological effects. From one of these early projects, this publication borrows its title – Immaterial Materialities – a term invented by El Lissitzky to describe the dynamics of our spatial conception, which could be explored through the design of imaginary spaces – possibilities pioneered by film and modern mass media. The inclusion of ephemeral elements such as light, line, colour, and media, reconceptualised materiality as an entirely dynamic category, a kind of 'materialised energy' (Vesnin). These ideas re-emerged transformed in the work of the Neo-avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s, and surfaced again in contemporary architectural debates. Atmosphere + Experience: Gernot Böhme thematizes the idea of 'materialized energy' under the heading of 'atmospheres,' which he sees as the fundamental concept of a new aesthetics in architecture. Questioning the primacy of vision, Böhme asks "is seeing really the truest means of perceiving architecture? Do we not feel it even more? And what does architecture actually shape – matter or should we say space?" Böhme points to the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor whose works build upon material experimentation and foreground sensory qualities. "Atmospheres", notes Böhme "are something that defines the human-in-the-world as a whole, i.e. his relationship to the environment, to other people, to things and works of art". Interactivity: Considerations on our relationship with atmosphere and weather have informed recent projects, which deploy materials as mediators or activating agents that probe the relationship between audience/user and the physical environment: Spatial investigations with phenomena-producing materials such as water, light, colour and temperature experiment with the viewer's experience (Eliasson); responsive high-tech materials interact with audiences (Spuybroek); 'weather architectures' (Hill), or 'atmo architectures' (Sloterdijk) technologically re-create nature as spatial experience and spectacle (Diller and Scofidio). Material Politics: Traditional materials such as timber and concrete have been re-imagined through the rediscovery of forgotten methods and connect us to the material traditions of historic regional architecture. Through the use of low-cost materials such as corrugated metal, Australian architects connect the beach house, the wool-shed, and industrial estates educing trans-historical, cross-cultural, and climatic associations by fusing the Australian vernacular with international modernism. In East Germany, architect Ulrich Müther's material experimentation with cast concrete generated an aura of cosmopolitanism that stood in stark contrast to the visual monotony of the iconic 'Plattenbauten' (pre-cast concrete towers) promoted by the government; whereas in 1950s Bosnia, Juraj Neidhardt argued that a systematic re-arrangement of architectural elements could facilitate an interactive relationship between the heritage built fabric and the new Communist society. Material Technology + Aesthetics: Architectural experiments in material-oriented computational design explore the design potential of conventional construction materials. Waste material and natural materials are fused chemically, or mechanically-fixed, providing imaginative design solutions for technological problems. New composites with changed material and aesthetic properties are suitable for an extended variety of applications. The traditional visual language of tectonics gives rise to a plastic aesthetic that rejects discrete structural elements in favour of homogeneity and gradient – a language that is just beginning to be explored. Material Referents: In contemporary art, Liam Gillick uses materials and architectural elements that reference the universal modernism favoured in corporate architecture; plexiglas, steel, and colour aluminium connect "the project of emancipation of the avant-gardes and the protocol of our alienation in a modern economy"; these material fragments prompt the viewer to reflect on a range of, at times conflicting, environments, which can be read "as partial images that call to mind a range of other moments and environments" (Verhagen). It is precisely this "calling to mind of other moments and environments" that Philip Ursprung detects in Hans Danuser's photographic representations of Peter Zumthor's architecture. Danuser's images evoke seemingly incompatible associations by revealing unexpected links between Zumthor's atmospheric concrete spaces and the problematic, post-industrial spaces of Alpine power plants and cooling towers. Photography, as Barthes argues, entails a frictional encounter with the reality of an image; an invisible disturbance of the photographic surface. All these approaches probe boundaries – between material and immaterial, art and science, practice and theory, representation and experience, tradition and innovation, and producer/object/user, giving rise to the following concerns: – What is the validity of different approaches to materiality in relation to the vital problems of our time? – Where do materials allow us to cross disciplinary, cultural, or other boundaries? – Can materials be deployed to create environments which predict user behaviour and control social relations and experiences? – Which trans-historical correspondences can be detected in contemporary approaches to materiality, and how do these challenge, imitate and expand on previous thinking? Submissions: Interstices: Journal of Architecture and Related Arts 14, "Immaterial Materialities: Materiality and interactivity in art and architecture", invites critical investigations of theoretical and historical content from academics, as well as practice-oriented contributions from content providers such as architects, artists and curators, that redress imbalances and missing links in the portrayal and debate of matters concerning materiality and interactivity in art and architecture from the 1920s onward. For the refereed part, we welcome submission of 5000 word papers and visual submissions with an accompanying text of approximately 500 words. For the non-refereed part, we welcome papers up to 2500 words and project reports and reviews of up to 1000 words related to the issue theme. Uno de los objetivos centrales de la Revista del IICE es poner en conocimiento de la comunidad educativa los avances actuales de la producción científica del campo de la investigación, elaborada tanto en nuestro instituto como en otros ámbitos académicos. Para ello, resulta necesario ampliar el espectro de posibles lectores mediante la renovación de su formato editorial. De ahí que la edición del número 30 de la revista inaugura un nuevo formato digital, que se suma a la edición impresa, lo cual representa un avance muy importante respecto de aquellos objetivos.En el mismo sentido tenemos el agrado de informar a los lectores que hemos actualizado la incorporación de la revista al catálogo LATINDEX, link http://www.latindex.unam.mx/buscador/ficRev.html?opcion=2&folio=2897, iniciando así el proceso de indexación.Por otra parte, seguimos para este número manteniendo la inclusión de un dossier, ya que permite presentar un estado de avance de una temática específica y de alto grado de interés en el campo educativo. Teniendo en cuenta la relevancia del problema de la formación y el trabajo docente, y la consiguiente producción de investigaciones en el campo educativo, hemos decidido incluir en este número, un dossier sobre Formación y trabajo docente. Se trata de un tema que presenta una amplia diversidad de enfoques y perspectivas que van desde la consideración de las políticas de regulación del trabajo docente hasta los problemas específicos como el de construir una pedagogía para la formación y el desarrollo profesional de los docentes.Como queda dicho, los artículos del dossier atienden a esta diversidad temática desde la perspectiva de la investigación y el estudio sobre la formación y el trabajo docente. Desde esta perspectiva, los análisis no pueden realizarse al margen de las condiciones efectivas en las que los maestros y profesores desarrollan cotidianamente su tarea. El dossier inicia con una entrevista a Phillippe Meirieu, realizada por Alejandra Birgin. En la misma, el entrevistado plantea, entre otras cuestiones interesantes, que la democratización de los sistemas educativos ha implicado una importante renovación de la problemática de la formación docente, reflejando el deseo de las sociedades de que el saber sea accesible a todos y no quede reservado a un pequeños núcleos o élites. A lo largo de la entrevista, el autor destaca principalmente la importancia de asumir un proyecto y una ética en la definición del docente, basada en el principio de que todos los alumnos son educables. El artículo de Daniel Suárez, aporta el enfoque de las narrativas pedagógicas como instancia de mediación entre la investigación educativa y la formación docente, proponiendo como dispositivo de formación una actividad de elaboración conjunta de narrativas, entre docentes e investigadores. El artículo de Marta Sipes enfoca la formación docente para la educación especial, haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de deconstruir las representaciones sociales y las concepciones médicas acerca de los niños con dificultades. Estas concepciones perfilan el modo de concebir las prácticas, formando en los futuros profesionales un concepto acerca del sujeto alumno focalizado en las deficiencias del mismo. La autora subraya dramáticas derivaciones prácticas en la formación, entre ellas la desvalorización del acto propiamente pedagógico.Por su parte, Andrea Alliaud presenta un recorrido por los aportes de diversos autores tomando como eje de la reflexión la pregunta acerca de cómo tienen que formarse los docentes para poder enseñar en las condiciones y circunstancias actuales.Nicolás Arata aporta desde la historia de la educación argentina, un análisis del ideario pedagógico de Manuel Belgrano, a partir del rescate de una variedad de elementos tomados de sus escritos sobre la educación: el peso otorgado a la formación de hombres industriosos y la preocupación por la educación práctica de los artesanos, destacando que estos escritos se inscriben en el marco de las reformas borbónicas, en el que tuvo lugar un proceso de revalorización de la formación manual.En el siguiente artículo Alejandro Vassiliades se propone dar cuenta de algunos avances de una investigación en curso orientada a aproximarse a un aspecto de las regulaciones del trabajo de enseñar: la configuración de posiciones docentes frente a situaciones de desigualdad educativa. La discusión teórica que presenta da elementos para justificar la construcción de la categoría de posición docente. Finalmente se detiene en la producción y circulación de significados acerca del trabajo docente, tanto desde instancias estatales como desde las prácticas de los profesores.El artículo de Nora Goggi comienza con el planteo de una serie de preguntas acerca de la situación de primer empleo de los docentes de educación infantil. Entre otras cuestiones destaca especialmente la relación con el propio saber, con el saber de los otros, con la cultura de la institución y consigo mismo en el camino de construcción de la propia identidad profesional.Finalmente, el dossier cierra con el artículo de Lea Vezub propone un recorrido a partir del análisis de fuentes secundarias, por las nuevas tendencias de desarrollo profesional docente, donde el acompañamiento pedagógico a docentes principiantes ocupa un lugar central. Se presenta una propuesta de propuesta que abarca cuatro ámbitos principal sobre los cuales enfocar la tarea y formación de los mentores, tutores o asesores.Los restantes artículos comprenden otras temáticas, por fuera del dossier. Liliana Cohen analiza las condiciones de organización de la actividad de enseñanza y las intervenciones didácticas que favorecen la actividad metalingüística de los niños sobre diferentes niveles del lenguaje escrito.Por otra parte, María Paula Pierella propone explorar las visiones de estudiantes universitarios de la carrera de física de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario sobre la autoridad de los profesores, como una cuestión problemática en la escena pedagógica contemporánea.Por último, el artículo de María Soledad Manrique tuvo por objetivo explorar la transformación en las prácticas de lectura de cuentos de un grupo de maestras de una institución educativa de la provincia de Buenos Aires, que atiende a niños en situación de pobreza. Luego, analiza un dispositivo de formación consistente en un taller experiencial focalizado.Esperamos que este número pueda contribuir a la consolidación de la investigación educativa en nuestro ámbito académico y abra el debate y el intercambio de ideas a partir de los artículos aquí publicados.José A. [ES]La memoria presente describe las actividades desarrolladas por el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas a lo largo del año 2005. Con esta edición se ha culminado un proceso de modernización del formato y los contenidos que comenzó con la del año 2003. La Memoria anual de este año es ya una publicación totalmente bilingüe español-inglés, no sólo tiene versiones en papel y en disco, sino también una versión digital en la web institucional y, finalmente, predominan los datos, gráficos y figuras a expensas del texto corrido. Todo ello no son sino adaptaciones obligadas a los tiempos que vivimos. El año que registra esta Memoria ha estado bajo la doble conmemoración de las figuras de Einstein y de Ochoa. Del primero hemos recordado su Annus Mirabilis de 1905, cuando publicó los artículos capitales de su producción científica; se trató en este caso de una conmemoración internacional, que contaba con el apoyo insólito de Naciones Unidas y que aquí en España llevó, incluso, a celebrar actos en el Congreso de los Diputados y en el Senado, además de las necesarias exposiciones, conferencias, congresos y actividades didácticas varias. El CSIC desempeñó un papel muy activo en los actos conmemorativos de este año de Einstein, como lo tendría también en la celebración del centenario de Ochoa. Homenajes, jornadas didácticas, exposiciones, ciclos de conferencias, concesión de la medalla de oro al premio Nobel de física Cohen-Tannoudji, publicaciones y otras actividades honraron la memoria de estos dos científicos eminentes del siglo pasado, ya que no en vano, uno de ellos, Einstein, había sido residente y conferenciante en la Residencia de Estudiantes y el otro, Ochoa, había iniciado su formación científica experimental en el laboratorio del Dr. Negrín que ocupaba el edificio "Trasatlántico". En cualquier caso, las conmemoraciones de figuras ejemplares de la historia científica y la modernización de la Memoria, no son más que ; epifenómenos de una actividad institucional muy compleja que, en otro lugar he comparado con esas imágenes generadas a partir de fórmulas fractales en bifurcación infinita: tal es la impresión que producen los 126 institutos del CSIC en su día a día. A ellos y a la actividad científica dedica la atención preferente esta Memoria, que registra datos novedosos de la actividad de las áreas y de la producción científica. También es mayor el énfasis que se pone este año en la transferencia de conocimiento y resultados de investigación, por su carácter absolutamente prioritario para el futuro de la institución, y sus más de 170 patentes nacionales e internacionales solicitadas. Nuestras más de 6.700 publicaciones en revistas respetadas internacionalmente (SCI y SSCI) garantizan la calidad de nuestra producción científica. Algunas de nuestras patentes han sido licenciadas para desarrollo comercial, y nuestro enfoque orientado al trabajo en equipo refuerza nuestras capacidades para desarrollar investigación básica y aplicada altamente competitiva, con énfasis en el desarrollo de herramientas orientadas a la solución de problemas. De hecho, algunas de estas herramientas, que están siendo desarrolladas en el CSIC podrían tener ser implementadas en el futuro, contribuyendo así a la sociedad del conocimiento, y convirtiendo así la orientación translacional a la investigación del CSIC en una realidad. Este nivel de actividad científica no podría ser mantenido sin el eficiente, y a menudo invisible, apoyo de nuestra plantilla, técnicos, servicios informáticos y editoriales, y nuestro personal administrativo. Nuestro mayor agradecimiento debe ir también para ellos: además de nuestra apreciación por la estructura que nos acoge, y la infraestructura económica que nos sustenta, valoramos especialmente su coraje para explorar esta oportunidad de promover la excelencia científica y su convicción de que seremos capaces de superar este reto. De nuestra actividad científica y de otras políticas clave para el CSIC, me he ocupado de que se hiciesen publicaciones específicas y folletos que, por una parte sirviesen para informar a la sociedad de lo que hacemos y, por otra, expusiesen el punto de vista del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas sobre políticas sectoriales y temas de actualidad. Son los conocidos como "position papers" que se van publicando y que constituyen algo así como complementos a la presente Memoria. ; Otras iniciativas de la presidencia en 2005 que quiero destacar, son la puesta en marcha de una nueva Área de Cultura Científica, que está realizando una impagable labor en la comunicación social de la ciencia, de lo que es muestra la nueva web institucional. También el fomento de las políticas de equidad de género, en las que el CSIC ha venido actuando como adelantado, o el aumento mismo de la visibilidad social, que probablemente es un indicio del buen momento que atraviesa el Organismo. A ese "buen momento" deben de haber contribuido la consecución de las tan esperadas mejoras retributivas, tanto para los investigadores, como para el personal técnico y de gestión, que aprobó el Gobierno de la nación. En su haber hay que anotar también la inclusión del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas en la lista de organismos que figuran en la Ley de Agencias, cuyo anteproyecto se aprobó en el mes de julio del año de referencia. Su aprobación ha tenido lugar ya en 2006 y su puesta en marcha será, pues, objeto de la Memoria del año que viene. Pero esa es otra historia que merecerá ser contada en otra ocasión, como podemos decir parafraseando a Michael Ende. ; [EN] This annual report describes the activities undertaken by the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científi cas or CSIC) over the course of 2005. This edition represents the culmination of a process of modernising its format and content which began in 2003. Much of the traditional continuous text has given way to data, graphs and fi gures. Moreover, this year's report is an entirely bilingual (Spanish-English) publication, and is available not only in hard copy and on disc, but also on-line at the institute's website. These changes refl ect our efforts to keep up with the demands of today's readers. The year covered by this report was marked by the double commemoration of Einstein and Ochoa. In the case of Einstein, 2005 was the centenary of his Annus Mirabilis of 1905, when he published the four articles that formed the basis of his contribution to modern physics. This international commemoration was backed by the United Nations, and in Spain it involved a celebration at the national Congress of Deputies and Senate, as well as the usual exhibitions, conferences, lectures and teaching activities. The CSIC played a very active role in the events commemorating Einstein year, as it also did in the case of Ochoa's centenary. The memory of these eminent twentieth-century scientists was honoured with tributes to their life and work, one-day educational events, exhibitions, lecture series, awarding of a gold medal to physics Nobel laureate Cohen-Tannoudji, publications, and other activities. In both cases there were links with the scientists: Einstein was a resident and lecturer at the Residencia de Estudiantes and Ochoa began his experimental scientifi c training at the laboratory of Dr. Negrín, who occupied the "Trasatlántico" building. However, the commemoration of even such outstanding fi gures from scientifi c history as these, and the revamping of the annual re ; port, were no more than marginal phenomena in the CSIC's highly complex institutional activity, which elsewhere I have compared to those infi nitely bifurcating images generated from fractal formulae. Such is the impression that the dayto- day work of the CSIC's 126 institutes produces. This annual report focuses on these institutes and their scientifi c activity, giving an overview of the scientifi c output of the CSIC's scientifi c areas and the new directions being taken by their activity. Greater emphasis was also placed in 2005 on knowledge transfer and disseminating research results, given the absolutely priority of these activities for the institution's future, and on its 170 national and international patent applications. The quality of the CSIC's scientifi c publications is underscored by the more than 6700 papers and articles published in prestigious international journals (included in the SCI and SSCI). Some of our patents have been licensed for commercial development, and our team-work focus reinforces our ability to undertake highly competitive basic and applied research, with the emphasis on developing problem-solving tools. Indeed, some of these tools being developed by the CSIC could fi nd practical applications in the near future, thereby contributing to the knowledge society and fulfi lling the CSIC's knowledge transfer emphasis. This level of scientifi c activity could not be sustained without the effi cient, and often invisible, support of our staff, technicians, IT services, publications department, and administrative personnel. We must also extend our utmost thanks to them. As well as our appreciation of the structure which enables us to carry out our work, and the economic infrastructure that makes it possible, we also value greatly the courage to explore this opportunity to promote scientifi c excellence and the conviction that we will be able to overcome the challenges involved. I have seen to it that special-purpose publications and ad hoc brochures are produced on our scientifi c activity and other key policies concerning the CSIC so as to inform society about our work, and to state the CSIC's point of view on sectorial policies and current topics. These "position papers", as they are known, are published as a complement to this annual report. ; Other initiatives emanating from the presidency in 2005 that I would like to highlight include the setting up of a new Scientifi c Culture Area, which is doing invaluable work to communicate science to society, for instance through our new institutional website. The promotion of gender equity policies, in which the CSIC has been taking the lead, or the increased public profi le of the institution are probably the best indicators of the good moment the organisation is enjoying. To this "good moment" the obtaining of the long awaited improvement in the salaries of researchers, technical and administrative personnel, fi nally approved by national government, must also have contributed. Also on the plus side, we should note the inclusion of the CSIC on the list of bodies in the Agencies Law, the bill for which went through parliament in July 2005. The law was passed in 2006 and its implementation will be the subject of next year's annual report. Unlike much of the secondary literature on Shakespeare, "Immanent Shakespeares: Politics, Performance, and Pedagogy" labors less to determine what Shakespearean texts might mean than to explore the cultural work these texts do while working in conjunction with contemporary institutions of learning and technologies of performance. Shakespeare studies too often takes the determination (or destabilization) of meaning as its telos, even when it's largely informed by performance criticism. This project sets meaning aside to focus on how Shakespeare's textuality gets mobilized through performance in order to produce material effects--effects that exceed and shape semantic meaning. Semantic and hermeneutic vocabularies leave performance scholars very few terms with which they might interrogate performance's most salient features: duration, embodiment, light, discipline or affect. Making and coming to terms with what Shakespeare can do inevitably involves refiguring the relationship between Shakespeare's text and performance practices. In the dissertation, I argue that the field of Shakespeare studies too often figures the difference between textuality and performance spatially . These spatial models figure performance in prepositional relation to textuality: performances arise from the text or are interpretations of textuality. Performance has largely been understood as an interpretation of a Shakespearean meaning residing within a static (albeit polysemic) textuality. On stage or on screen, performance is continually represented as exterior to--and is considered over-determined by--textuality. My project, instead, figures the difference between stage/screen and page in terms of time. This move, from figures of space to figures of time, forces a reconsideration of many disciplinary assumptions (in literary, film and performance studies). Cultural studies' spatializing tendency, inseparable from the way it often figures difference (as "difference between" two discrete identities), is rooted in a long history of transcendental dialectics. Textuality and performance are framed, spatially, in terms of transcendence (even when stage-centered criticism tries to invert this relation, prioritizing performance, it nevertheless continues to understand difference within a transcendental relation). My project moves from a transcendental, spatial understanding of difference to one rooted in immanent, temporal duration. Giorgio Agamben recently identified "two different trajectories in contemporary French philosophy, both of which pass through Heidegger: a trajectory of transcendence , which includes Levinas and Derrida and goes back through Hussurl to Kant; and a trajectory of immanence , which includes Foucault and Deleuze, and goes back through Nietzsche to Spinoza." The dissertation works throughout to illustrate how this shift--from transcendental, spatial constraint to immanent, temporal production--allows for more nuanced discussions of elements constitutive of performance. The project considers Shakespearean performance within a variety of institutional arenas; different chapters consider reading practices, teaching practices, student performance, theatrical enactment, and new (and old) media engagement. This approach entails a series of interlocking, close, rhetorical readings of particular performances, theatrical/filmic/video/digital media technologies, arts/educational legislation, as well as the institutional discourses accompanying each. These close readings work to refigure the problem of textuality and performance in civic, aesthetic and pedagogical discourses; each chapter, subsequent to this refiguration, ends by proposing innovative, practice-based solutions. In Chapter One, I build on the critique of spatialized understandings of text and performance outlined in the introduction in order to argue that the humanities' figuration of difference and power (alongside attendant assumptions about the relationship between self and structure) continues to hide more than it reveals about culture, history, power and performance. In the chapter, I argue for and illustrate what an alternative, immanent critique might look like. The chapter focuses on two "objects" (a methodological term which seems to point to how performance is always already spatialized): 1) a "radical" or "transgressive" performance of Macbush , a contemporary re-imagining of Macbeth , and 2) a seemingly co-opted, official, "normative" performance of Macbeth sponsored by Boeing, the "right-wing" NEA, and the US Department of Defense. The chapter examines these two ostensibly opposed productions by rehearsing a dialectical or "transcendental" critique and using a common (hackneyed) reading of de Certeau's strategy/tactic distinction--one which emphasizes and prioritizes de Certeau's interest in space. I then complicate this reading by showing how de Certeau's figuration of power and performance within the panoptic city already includes an inclination towards an immanent understanding of power's circulation--one that emphasizes time and complicates the spatial cartographies upon which dialectical movement finds its ground and proper "identity." Through this immanent reading, I argue that dialectical understandings of culture and power rely upon a particular way of understanding the priority of space, one strengthened by Cold War discourses of cultural fronts and quantitative, incursive movements through homogenous space (both Macbeth and Bush, in prioritizing the stability of space over the contingencies of time, make this same tragic flaw in different ways). Ultimately, I argue that an immanent understanding of culture and power corresponds with contemporary changes in the shape of Empire and new ways of conceptualizing the flows of global capital, ways rooted in performance's duration and affect. Further, this immanent reading (and the shape of Empire and history correlative to this approach) highlights the dangers of the Left's reliance upon historical analogies that flatten important differences between Vietnam and Iraq or between Bush and Macbeth. Chapter Two develops the notion of immanent critique by revisiting dualistic notions of self and structure in film theory and performance studies. In this chapter, I look at the spatial arrangement of spectators, specific media, and apparatuses of projection. Through a reading of Prospero's Books , a 1991 "new media" film using proto-HDTV technologies and bourgeoning CGI graphics software, this chapter looks at film's ability, through these technologies, to trouble film theory's traditionally spatial understanding of filmic semiotics and the spectator's relation to the (transcendent) filmic apparatus. This chapter introduces an immanent performance theory to film theory by offering a new reading of the latter's key texts--from Munsterberg and Armheim, to Balazs and Metz, to Benjamin's Artwork essay--highlighting along the way each theorist's relation to the "immanent turn" in cultural studies. Key here will be the role each theorist gives to temporal relations. Particularly useful in rethinking the spectator's relationship to the (new or old media) apparatus is Benjamin's notion of "creative innervation"--a term he uses to show how the spectator's body is productively enlivened, rather than negatively determined, by a technological apparatus which becomes, for him or her, a prosthesis. This chapter puts Benjamin into contact with Deleuze to sketch out what an immanent model of reception might entail once traditional notions of the filmic apparatus' (over-) determinism have collapsed. This immanent understanding of filmic reception--a productive reception modeled in Prospero's Books --builds upon various notions of "pseudopresences" and theories of "affective faciality/physiognomy" sketched out by twentieth century film theorists in order to rethink the presence/absence binary and the various ways in which this binary gets unevenly mapped onto the disciplines of theatre and film. Chapter Three looks at how changing technologies continue to reconstitute the disciplinary gulf between film and theatre. In this chapter, I look at two interlocking performances: Richard Burton's 1964 Electronovision Hamlet and the Wooster Group's "new media" Hamlet . Working with Deleuze's idea of "the theatre of repetition," and continuing to work with Walter Benjamin's notion of "creative innervation," this chapter examines the technologies of repetition each Hamlet employs in order to read, write, and perform with the pre-recorded yet affective and "pseudopresent" specters of history. In July of 1964, three performances of the Burton-Gielgud Hamlet were recorded and edited together thanks to "miracle of Electronovision." The resulting "Theatrofilm" was then screened for two days in over one thousand theaters in order to give audiences the "liveness" of a Broadway show right in their own local theater. Recently, the Wooster Group has been staging another version of Hamlet , one that utilizes the Isadora and Final Cut Pro platforms to digitally remix and reframe the Burton-Gielgud production as an historical background upon which the company acts. Onstage, The Wooster Group imitates the 1964 Hamlet gesture for gesture in what the group likens to an archeological reconstruction, but I argue for an alternate figuration, one that is less spatial and more temporal in its figuration of history. This chapter uses these two performances (and their contemporary technologies) to ask how the so-called "new" media differently mediate our relationship with the past. I argue that new technological interfaces enable us to engage in historiographical research on stages and screens in ways that are singularly durational and within registers that are incommensurate to the textual historiographies of journals and monographs. Each of the Hamlet productions I treat figures a relation to history, treating the past as an interactive ensemble of images that are engageable yet immutably scripted. Chapter Four begins my engagement with critical pedagogy as I attempt to rework Freirean accounts of the classroom as a space of cultural contradiction and potential "liberation." The chapter asks how we might instead see classroom practices as productive of political, economic and ethical behaviors. Since the 1980s, critical pedagogy has rallied for the inclusion of "hip hop in the classroom" as part of a culturally relevant, Freirean model of connecting language with the lived experience of inner-city youth. But the movement begins to achieve success at the very moment hip hop begins losing its geographic specificity. Recently, a number of programs ("Shakespeare is Hip Hop," "Shakespeare: the Remix," and "Shakespeare in Urban Slang") have sought to connect Shakespeare and hip hop as a way of bridging the divide between the spaces of high and low culture. In this chapter, I examine the strange effects of local, culturally specific pedagogical practices fusing Shakespeare and hip hop which--like the music itself--have been removed, practiced and copied outside of what was once their "proper" space. What happens when suburban youth are asked by their teachers to perform Macbeth in hip hop vernacular? YouTube abounds with blackface Shakespeare. More importantly, though, the chapter rethinks intercultural borrowing and how the logic of "appropriation" falsely frames culture as private property at the same time that young people who identify with remix culture increasingly strive for a "creative commons" and continually challenge the spatial proprieties of culture. This chapter puts the "culture wars" into dialogue with the "copyright wars" and argues that, in a world where the line between public and private properties and spaces is increasingly blurred by virtual glocalities, digital rights management software and copyleft legal theories, cultural studies needs to rethink the spatial logic of cultural appropriation. Chapter Five brings immanent critique to the space of the classroom by examining another the Shakespeare teaching docudrama. These films, both fictional and documentary, chronicle "successful" pedagogues and the at-risk students whose lives they transform. In this chapter, I look at a few of these films alongside the No Child Left Behind Act's legislation on "character education." Performing a genealogy of the "character education movement" from the Greeks to 21st century US contexts, this chapter looks at the way in which Shakespearean repetitions operate to construct both a particularly American Shakespeare as well as a particularly American characterization of the student body. Centering on Prince Hal's Saint Crispin's Day speech, this chapter also explores the way in which discourses of national "character" and their corresponding pedagogies rely upon a particularly vertical (patrilineal, spatial, transcendental) notion of repetition and differentiation, one which might be refigured by Hardt and Negri's notion of how the immanent multitude operates in time. This chapter moves from the performance of character to a notion of "performing character." Much as earlier chapters refigured text/performance or apparatus/performance oppositions, this chapter shows how dialectical pedagogies might give way to durational, embodied performance pedagogies. The dissertation's concluding chapter, its post-script, uses the pedants of Love's Labour's Lost to engage in an interdisciplinary genealogy of the geek. I focus on three figures of the student body's relation to technology (the bookworm, the computer nerd, and the drama queen) in order to better understand how the "geek" has gained increased importance as a category of social difference and exclusion. The conclusion asks: How does the alterity of the geek historically produce and trouble the mutual exclusivity of love and labor , humans and machines, males and females, the curricular and the extracurricular, and/or the physical and the metaphysical? As a means of overcoming learning's alienation from the social, the dissertation concludes by introducing a "geek chic" performance pedagogy. This pedagogy uses training in digital video editing to include the social, and often virtual, extracurricular lives of students. Through editing their own performances (as they often already do within the world of social networking sites), students will rehearse the behaviors, gestures, expressions and temporal movements that constitute what we perceive as character. By examining these "character effects," students are trained to understand character differently--less as an originary space or cause of performance and more as a legible effect of performative behavior.
Digital transformations help to activate not only professional media agents but also ordinary consumers. Due to the expansion of the field of media, a situation arises where control over the media comes into conflict with the realization of the human right to freedom of expression and thought. Thus, the question of inventing ways to self-regulate the processes of media creation and media consumption becomes actual. In order to form public opinion on the demand for responsible media production and media consumption, there is a need to combine human rights and non-discrimination education with the practice of media education. Public activists are often the only ones in the field of media who disseminate knowledge on human rights, non-discrimination but use media technology without considering the possible positive or negative effects. Professional information producers, in particular the mass media, do not always communicate with members of the public to the extent necessary for accurate, balanced, and impartial coverage of complex human rights issues. Therefore, one of the societal problems is the lack of effective interaction between social activists as providers of human rights and non-discrimination values and media educators, as well as journalists as providers of media literacy and professional information producers. From 2016 to 2020, we, in cooperation with public organizations and individual activists, implemented a number of projects to identify ways to solve the problems arising from this communication gap. This study presents two illustrative cases. The first case presents the experience of educational pieces of training «Creative Journalism» for schoolchildren and «School of Media Volunteers» for adults, which were created within the project «Gender Culture Center as a platform for women's rights and youth», implemented with the support of the European Union. The second case presents the results of the information campaign of the human rights festival of accessibility of the city and culture «InclusiON» on the initiative of KRF «Public Alternative» with the support of crowdfunding, Ukrainian Culture Found, and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine. The obtained results allowed to define the roles of interaction agents (media educators, public activists, and journalists) and to describe three models of their communication interaction: 1) chain, where public activists are a source of information and the stakeholder in the distribution of certain content in certain topics; 2) dialogue, where public activists and media educators initiate a public event together in order to create a situation of communication between journalists, public activists and representatives of certain social groups. This study paved the way for an experiment on implementation of a third type of interaction – co-production, where a journalist, a public activist and a media educator work together to create a tool for teaching media literacy. ; Цифровые трансформации способствуют активизации не только профессиональных агентов медиа, но и обычных потребителей. Вследствие расширения поля медиа возникает ситуация, когда контроль над медиа вступает в коллизию с реализацией права человека на свободу выражения мысли и слова. Таким образом, возникает вопрос изыскания путей саморегулирования процессов медиатворчества и медиапотребления. Для формирования общественного мнения относительно требований ответственного медиапроизводства и потребления медиа возникает необходимость сочетания просвещения по тематике прав человека и недискриминации с практикой медиаобразования. Часто общественные активисты являются единственными в поле медиа, кто распространяет знания по тематике прав человека, недискриминации, однако используют медиатехнологии, не учитывая возможные положительные или отрицательные эффекты. Профессиональные производители информации, в частности СМИ, не всегда общаются с представителями общественности в том объеме, который необходим для достоверного, сбалансированного и беспристрастного освещения сложных тем правозащитной деятельности. Поэтому одной из общественных проблем является отсутствие эффективного взаимодействия между общественными активистами как провайдерами ценностей прав человека и недискриминации и медиапросветителями, а также журналистами как провайдерами медиаграмотности и профессиональными производителями информации. С 2016 по 2020 год нами в сотрудничестве с общественными организациями и отдельными активистами был реализован ряд проектов, которые позволили наметить пути решения проблем, возникающих в результате этого коммуникационного разрыва. В данном исследовании представлены два показательных кейса. Первый кейс представляет опыт просветительских тренингов «Креативная журналистика» для школьников и «Школа медиаволонтеров» для взрослых, которые были созданы в рамках проекта «Центр гендерной культуры как платформа для расширения прав женщин и молодежи», реализуемого при поддержке Европейского Союза. Второй кейс представляет результаты информационной кампании правозащитного фестиваля доступности города и культуры «ИнклюзиON» по инициативе ХОФ «Общественная Альтернатива» при поддержке краудфандинга, УКФ и Фонда Эберта в Украине. Полученные результаты позволили определить роли агентов взаимодействия (медиаобразователей, общественных активистов и журналистов) и описать три модели их коммуникационного взаимодействия: 1) цепная, где общественные активисты являются источником информации и заинтересованной стороной в распространении определенного контента, а медиапедагоги обучают медиаграмотности потребителей медиаконтента по заданной тематике; 2) диалоговая, где общественные активисты и медиапедагоги вместе инициируют публичное событие с целью создания ситуации общения журналистов, общественных активистов и представителей определенных социальных групп. Это исследование открыло путь для эксперимента по реализации третьего типа взаимодействия – производственного, где журналист, общественный активист и медиапедагог работают вместе для создания инструмента обучения медиаграмотности. ; Цифрові трансформації сприяють активізації не тільки професійних агентів медіа, але й звичайних споживачів. Професійні виробники інформації, зокрема ЗМІ, не завжди комунікують із представниками громадськості в тому обсязі, який необхідний для достовірного, збалансованого та неупередженого висвітлення складних тем правозахисту. Тож, однією з проблем суспільства є відсутність ефективної взаємодії між громадськими активістами як провайдерами цінностей прав людини й недискримінації та медіаосвітянами й журналістами як провайдерами медіаграмотності і професійними виробниками інформації. З 2016 по 2020 рік нами у співпраці із громадськими організаціями і окремими активістами було реалізовано низку проєктів, що дозволили окреслити шляхи вирішення проблем, що виникають внаслідок цього комунікаційного розриву. В дослідженні представлено два показових кейси взаємодії громадських активістів, медіаосвітян і журналістів. Перший кейс представляє досвід просвітницьких тренінгів «Креативна журналістика» для школярів і «Школа медіаволонтерів» для дорослих, які було розроблено та проведено в рамках проєкту «Центр гендерної культури як платформа для розширення прав жінок та молоді», реалізованого за підтримки Європейського Союзу. Це дослідження відкрило шлях для експерименту щодо реалізації третього типу взаємодії – виробничого, де журналіст, громадський активіст і медіаосвітянин працюють разом задля створення інструменту навчання медіаграмотності.
Cien números de una revista digital de análisis de las relaciones internacionales es un largo camino. "Letras Internacionales" ha abierto un espacio de reflexión universitaria en la que estudiantes, docentes, actores políticos y académicos nacionales e internacionales de primer orden, en todos estos años, han vertido sus análisis de forma plural y abierta. Convencidos de que el debate abierto y la respetuosa exposición de ideas enriquecen el mundo universitario y la vida ciudadana y democrática en el sentido más amplio, la profundización de este talante de "Letras Internacionales", que se confirma con este número 100, ha de seguir siendo motivación fundamental de esta revista.Así, en la sección que es la nuestra, Política Internacional, la cita de Karl W. Deutsch que inaugura cada número de "Letras Internacionales" sitúa la importancia de la materia en la panoplia de los estudios de ciencias sociales. Pero también deja planteado el formidable asunto de la gobernabilidad de las relaciones internacionales. Una problemática de gobernabilidad presente desde la apertura misma de la licenciatura de Estudios Internacionales en nuestra Universidad en 1993 (que coincide con los primeros años de la post- Guerra Fría), y que dibuja el contorno de uno de los principales ejes de preocupación política y académica de estos lustros. No es posible imaginar los escenarios políticos de gobernabilidad internacional que se han ido delineando poco a poco en estos tiempos, sin tener una cabal noción de lo que significan los "G- x" en relaciones internacionales. Presentemos pues una somera descripción, con algunas de las problemáticas que cada uno de ellos comportan, para ilustrar el panorama actual, a la vez que dejar abiertas interrogantes que con el tiempo, seguramente, se irán dilucidando en sucesivos futuros análisis de nuestros distintos columnistas: porque estamos convencidos que "Letras Internacionales" tiene un promisorio futuro por delante, para satisfacción intelectual y académica de nuestra Universidad y de su Licenciatura de Estudios Internacionales.El G-2. Lo integra Estados Unidos y China. Muchos analistas creen que es el escenario bilateral más importante del siglo XXI, porque los dos países, primer y segunda potencia económicas mundiales al día de hoy, son también los grandes actores estratégicos y militares de los nuevos tiempos. China es más reticente a admitir un papel preponderante en este sentido. Y la política de Estados Unidos privilegia, claro está, su relación con China, pero no desmerece los otros escenarios de negociación internacional multilaterales en los que tiene activa participación. El G-4. Formado por Japón, Brasil, India y Alemania, son países que tienen en común la voluntad de reformar el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas en un sentido que plasme los equilibrios internacionales actuales, lejos de la situación política y militar que dejó el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en 1945.El G- 8. Originalmente, se trató del "club de los ricos" del G-7 de los años setenta y ochenta: Estados Unidos, Japón, Alemania occidental (luego toda Alemania unificada), Francia, Italia, Reino Unido y Canadá, al que se agregó Rusia en 1997. Con un primer centro de atención financiero y económico, a partir del fin de la Guerra Fría el G-8 empieza a tratar temas de seguridad internacional y por esta vía, de alguna manera, se instala en paralelo al grupo de cinco países que integran de forma permanente el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas – Francia, Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Rusia y China -. La inclusión de Rusia en el G-8, en este sentido, va más en acuerdo con criterios políticos y militares que con razones económicas. El G-8 se posiciona pues como un grupo de hecho, con criterios de conformación que podrían entenderse como ambiguos – no todos son potencias económicas, no todos son potencias militares, no todos son democracias modernas, no todos son victoriosos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial -, pero que claramente permite el intercambio de ideas y consultas entre las principales potencias del mundo.El G-14. Está conformado por la conjunción del G-8, el G-5, formado por las cinco grandes potencias emergentes, China, India, Brasil, México y Sudáfrica, y un actor de Medio Oriente fundamental como Egipto. No es un grupo exclusivo como el G-8; tiene una vocación económica evidente, aunque no permite la apertura e integración de todas las potencias emergentes, como el G- 20.El G-20. A los países del G-8 y del G-5, el G-20 agrega Argentina, Australia, Indonesia, Arabia Saudita, Turquía, Corea del Sur y la presidencia de la Unión Europea. Representa el 87,8% del PBI mundial de 2009 y el 65% de la población mundial. El G-20 ha sido fundamental a lo largo de 2008 y 2009 para manejar la crisis financiera posterior a la crisis de las sub-primes estadounidense. Algunos actores relevantes del G- 20, como Brasil e India, apuestan a que el grupo se transforme en la plataforma de gobernabilidad internacional que precisan las relaciones internacionales. Sin embargo, no parece sencillo dar al G-20 un lugar determinado y claro en el manejo de los temas internacionales. En efecto, hay países que lo integran cuyo peso político internacional es escaso – ilustración clara: Argentina -, y hay otros, cuyo papel en la seguridad internacional es notoriamente marginal porque dependiente de los Estados Unidos – Japón, Arabia Saudita, Corea del Sur -. La integración de potencias regionales y no mundiales, como Turquía, Brasil, México, Australia, Indonesia y Sudáfrica, abren ciertamente el espectro de negociaciones a zonas del mundo que, por su dinamismo económico o por su peso demográfico, precisan de una mayor atención en el concierto internacional. Pero es claro también, que los temas centrales de las relaciones internacionales, pasado el escenario angustioso financiero de 2008-2009, siguen encontrando en el restringido G-8 un lugar natural de negociación y diálogo entre las principales potencias del mundo.De forma general, la multiplicación de los G-x es muestra clara de la necesidad de contar con escenarios de gobernabilidad que amplíen los previstos a la salida del orden de posguerra de 1945. ¿Podrán transformarse efectivamente en instrumentos eficaces de un nuevo orden mundial? La voluntad francesa de dotar de mayor institucionalidad al G-20, con una secretaría permanente, va un poco en ese sentido. Pero es una iniciativa que no desdibuja el papel del G-8, y que quiere dirigir los esfuerzos del G-20 en un sentido de mayor cooperación internacional y desarrollo, dejando de lado los temas estratégicos- militares y de seguridad. My project explores and compares different forms of gender performance in contemporary art and visual culture according to a perspective centered on photography. Thanks to its attesting power this medium can work as a ready-made. In fact during the 20th century it played a key role in the cultural emancipation of the body which (using a Michel Foucault's expression) has now become «the zero point of the world». Through performance the body proves to be a living material of expression and communication while photography ensures the recording of any ephemeral event that happens in time and space. My questioning approach considers the gender constructed imagery from the 1990s to the present in order to investigate how photography's strong aura of realism promotes and allows fantasies of transformation. The contemporary fascination with gender (especially for art and fashion) represents a crucial issue in the global context of postmodernity and is manifested in a variety of visual media, from photography to video and film. Moreover the internet along with its digital transmission of images has deeply affected our world (from culture to everyday life) leading to a postmodern preference for performativity over the more traditional and linear forms of narrativity. As a consequence individual borders get redefined by the skin itself which (dissected through instant vision) turns into a ductile material of mutation and hybridation in the service of identity. My critical assumptions are taken from the most relevant changes occurred in philosophy during the last two decades as a result of the contributions by Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze who developed a cross-disciplinary and comparative approach to interpret the crisis of modernity. They have profoundly influenced feminist studies so that the category of gender has been reassessed in contrast with sex (as a biological connotation) and in relation to history, culture, society. The ideal starting point of my research is the year 1990. I chose it as the approximate historical moment when the intersection of race, class and gender were placed at the forefront of international artistic production concerned with identity, diversity and globalization. Such issues had been explored throughout the 1970s but it was only from the mid-1980s onward that they began to be articulated more consistently. Published in 1990, the book "Gender trouble: feminism and the subversion of identity" by Judith Butler marked an important breakthrough by linking gender to performance as well as investigating the intricate connections between theory and practice, embodiment and representation. It inspired subsequent research in a variety of disciplines, art history included. In the same year Teresa de Lauretis launched the definition of queer theory to challenge the academic perspective in gay and lesbian studies. In the meantime the rise of Third Wave Feminism in the US introduced a racially and sexually inclusive vision over the global situation in order to reflect on subjectivity, new technologies and popular culture in connection with gender representation. These conceptual tools have enabled prolific readings of contemporary cultural production whether fine arts or mass media. After discussing the appropriate framework of my project and taking into account the postmodern globalization of the visual, I have turned to photography to map gender representation both in art and in fashion. Therefore I have been creating an archive of images around specific topics. I decided to include fashion photography because in the 1990s this genre moved away from the paradigm of an idealized and classical beauty toward a new vernacular allied with lifestyles, art practices, pop and youth culture; as one might expect the dominant narrative modes in fashion photography are now mainly influenced by cinema and snapshot. These strategies originate story lines and interrupted narratives using models' performance to convey a particular imagery where identity issues emerge as an essential part of fashion spectacle. Focusing on the intersections of gender identities with socially and culturally produced identities, my approach intends to underline how the fashion world has turned to current trends in art photography and in some case turned to the artists themselves. The growing fluidity of the categories that distinguish art from fashion photography represents a particularly fruitful moment of visual exchange. Varying over time the dialogue between these two fields has always been vital; nowadays it can be studied as a result of this close relationship between contemporary art world and consumer culture. Due to the saturation of postmodern imagery the feedback between art and fashion has become much more immediate and then increasingly significant for anyone who wants to investigate the construction of gender identity through performance. In addition to that a lot of magazines founded in the 1990s bridged the worlds of art and fashion because some of their designers and even editors were art-school graduates encouraging innovation. The inclusion of art within such magazines aimed at validating them as a form of art in themselves supporting a dynamic intersection for music, fashion, design and youth culture: an intersection that also contributed to create and spread different gender stereotypes. This general interest in fashion produced many exhibitions of and about fashion itself at major international venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Since then this celebrated success of fashion has been regarded as a typical element of postmodern culture. Owing to that I have also based my analysis on some important exhibitions dealing with gender performance like "Féminin-Masculin" at the Centre Pompidou of Paris (1995), "Rrose is a Rrose is a Rrose. Gender performance in photography" at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of New York (1997), "Global Feminisms" at the Brooklyn Museum (2007), "Female Trouble" at the Pinakothek der Moderne in München together with the workshops dedicated to "Performance: gender and identity" in June 2005 at the Tate Modern of London. Since 2003 in Italy we have had Gender Bender - an international festival held annually in Bologna - to explore the gender imagery stemming from contemporary culture. In few days this festival offers a series of events ranging from visual arts, performance, cinema, literature to conferences and music. Being aware that any method of research is neither race nor gender neutral I have traced these critical paths to question gender identity in a multicultural perspective taking account of the political implications too. In fact, if visibility may be equated with exposure, we can also read these images as points of intersection of visibility with social power. Since gender assignations rely so heavily on the visual, the postmodern dismantling of gender certainty through performance has wide-ranging effects that need to be analyzed. In some sense this practice can even contest the dominance of visual within postmodernism. My visual map in contemporary art and fashion photography includes artists like Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Hellen van Meene, Rineke Dijkstra, Ed Templeton, Ryan McGinley, Anne Daems, Miwa Yanagi, Tracey Moffat, Catherine Opie, Tomoko Sawada, Vanessa Beecroft, Yasumasa Morimura, Collier Schorr among others.
