Očitne so tematske in motivne paralele z nekaterimi drugimi britanskimi pisatelji (npr.

; The thesis contributes to the debate about the revision of the American literary canon. Its first focus is on the history and mythology of Puerto Rico, the second on the social situation and image of the Puerto Ricans in the U.S., and the third on the prose literature by authors of Puerto Rican descent published in English. (1) The Spanish colony of Puerto Rico became a possession of the U.S. in 1898 and experienced a rapid economic rise in the second half of the 20th century, at the expence of growing dependence on the American welfare state. In free referendums the people of Puerto Rico have so far condoned the intermediate status of their island, which still is neither a state of the union nor an independent nation. But in fact the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico remains a colony of the U.S., as the real power to decide about its status lies with Congress. Puerto Rico's mythology has from the start been dominated by stereotypes, which have resulted in a negative cliché of its national character. The United States' political, economic and cultural hegemony has reinforced the alleged schizophrenic state of Puerto Rico. The only chance of healing this Puerto Rican syndrome is the island's national independence. (2) Stereotypes have also determined the image in the American public of the Puerto Ricans who have migrated to the mainland. The bad reputation of this hardly assimilated group is constantly being confirmed by the mass media, although serious studies prove that earlier immigrants had similar problems. Most U.S. experts still advocate the migrants' gradual assimilitation according to the ideal of cultural pluralism. Since the rise of multiculturalism, within the U.S. Puerto Rican community the trend has been going towards a hybrid, bicultural, Nuyorican identity. The dissertation assesses the literature about Puerto Ricans in the U.S. published in English from 15 key aspects: culture, religion, education, language, politics, work, welfare, housing, ethnicity, race, class, gender, family, law and order und migration. A critical look at books, movies and musicals by non-Puerto Ricans shows that in these genres migrants from Puerto Rico have by and large been portrayed benevolenty. This is true even for the musical West Side Story, which has often been wrongly blamed for stigmatizing Puerto Rican youngsters as gangsters. (3) Puerto Rican prose literature in English has so far played little role in the American canon and in criticism. This thesis offers the first analysis of the many new volumes from the eighties and nineties on a socio-historical basis. The overall trends of recent Nuyorican literature are its diversification und feminization. There is a greater diversity of settings, text types and themes. Gender is a central issue not only with the women, but also with a number of male authors. Of those writers who take New York as the setting, Abraham Rodriguez, Jr. is the most important. Rodriguez's books are about teenagers in the South Bronx whose Puerto Rican ethnicity is no crucial factor any more. Thus he is the most Americanised author among the Nuyoricans. The most convincing interpretation of the migratory process is Esmeralda Santiago's. Her main thrust is against the Puerto Rican tradition of sexism. The works of Rosario Ferré, some told in magic realism and all set in Puerto Rico, also have a feminist tendency. The best books by Rodriguez, Santiago, Ferré and a few more Puerto Ricans deserve to be recognised as a valuable and visionary contribution to American literature.
(DIPF/Orig.) ; An assessment of the literature on globalization and (adult) education reveals that adult education plays only a marginal role in the discourse on internationalization, Europeanization, globalization and global society: Key questions and problems in this field that were brought up in the 1990s have still hardly received significant academic attention. As the author emphasizes, the result is a wide open field of research for adult education researchers in which there is much more to discover and explain than culture-related topics to which the questions of "global society" are often reduced. The basis of this assessment is a detailed discourse analytical review by the author in the course of which he compares the somewhat older work on the topic of globalization, "International Handbook on Globalisation, Education und Policy Research" (2005), with two more contemporary handbooks on adult education, namely "The Palgrave International Handbook on Adult and Lifelong Education and Learning" (2018) and "The Handbook of Adult and Continuing Education" (2020). Enriched by other literature, this review essay compares nearly two decades of "regional German" and "international English" academic discourse on adult education in globalization and global society and attempts to summarize important topics and conceptual developments. ; The monograph The Politics of Englishness (2007) by Northern Irish political scientist Arthur Aughey provides a thorough and sound overview of recent discussions of English national identity. In doing so, the author transcends the perspective of political sciences, making the study highly appropriate reading for those in the literary and cultural studies who are invested in the topic. Moreover (and in contrast to many studies by English authors, which tend to be ideologically charged) the author convinces by maintaining a high degree of objectivity when considering this politically charged issue.
Persia in the Trans-Atlantic Context: From Nineteenth-Century British Imperial Literature to American Transcendental Embrace principally explores the battle over the "discursive formation" of Persia in the nineteenth century within a primarily intra-European "discourse," first with an overt emphasis on English works, and then from a trans-Atlantic perspective. This dissertation offers an analysis of the pivotal The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan (1824) and tries to demonstrate how the emergence of this book in the Imperial Century introduced a novel and politically-charged image of the Qajar Persia, altering the aesthetic, historical, literary, mystical and generally civilizational perceptions of Persia that dominated the Western "discursive" reservoir during the previous centuries. Contextualizing this work and many other secondary sources within the very elaborate networks of imperial strife, intrigues and alliances, I argue that the entity of Persia does not emerge as homogenously as expected, while certain modes of "dis-course" within the intra-European setting inhibits the realization of the British imperial "discursive" policy vis-à-vis the dwindling Imperial State of Iran. I then show how these alternative "discourses," with their deep roots in Germanophone intellectual circles, try to challenge and decenter the "discourse" that emerged from the British imperial enterprise with regard to the Sublime State of Persia, as its geo-political "Other." I will then show how this sympathetic mode of German "Orientalism," together with the British imperial "Orientalism," trickled across to the other side of the Atlantic and paved the way for the same battle in the New World over the same entity. I contend that the aesthetically and philosophically-charged modes of "discourse," however, could find a more fertile ground in the nineteenth-century New World, where, for instance, a figure like Ralph Waldo Emerson, the distinguished transcendentalist philosopher and poet, tried to introduce and appropriate many tenets of pre-Islamic and Islamic Persia for his own intellectual purposes. This has been shown through a close reading of Emerson's "Oriental" endeavors.
Untersuchungsgrundlage sind sieben Romane – u. a. ; "Translating Race" examines the translation of African-American English into German. Drawing on both Translation Studies and Transnational American Studies, and focusing on seven U.S. novels in which African-American English constitutes a source of meaning – including Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982), and Danzy Senna's Caucasia (1998) – "Translating Race" argues that the strategies employed to translate African-American English into German frequently rely on racial or even racist stereotypes that are not present in the originals. In the context of translations of U.S. novels into German, African-American English has been translated in a large variety of ways, including standard German, colloquial German, German dialects, and made-up non-standard varieties of German. It is only through a comparison of the individual translations with their originals, however, that the effects of these different translation strategies become apparent: whereas in the U.S. texts African-American English serves to portray blackness as multidimensional, individualistic, and de-marginalized, as well as the basis of identity and community, the very same characters often appear as either silent or as marginalized "Others" in German translations, which thus reduce them to stereotypes and, occasionally, veritable caricatures of themselves. Moreover, while the American texts raise complex questions about racial identity and about the relationship between "black" and "white," the German translations universalize these issues, reformulating them as universal questions about social injustice. Shorn of the specific historical and cultural contexts of the African-American experience, and transposed into a German context, the texts are ideologically functionalized, also for political purposes, and perpetuate racial differentiations and racist ideologies. "Translating Race" simultaneously contributes to Translation Studies, especially to the investigation of power structures in and via translations, and Transnational American Studies, particularly to the literary construction of race within the context of cultural processes of exchange between Germany and the U.S. and to the role of translations in shedding new light on the originals. Finally, "Translating Race" also provides translators with practical advice on how (not) to translate African-American English. ; 274 Blätter
Literary imitations of the testament form have a European tradition going back to classical times and constitute a neglected part of English literature. Although examples appear from the 14th century onwards, no thorough study of last wills and testaments as a specific form of English literature has been undertaken. This neglect may be because, within the broad field of the literary idea of 'legacy', parodies of the testament form ('mock testaments') and serious imitations ('lovers' testaments' etc.) appear in nearly every genre as either single texts or parts of larger ones, themselves crossing the genre boundaries. Then too, a large number of literary testaments come under the heading of 'minor literature' , such as shortlived pamphlets and broadsides. Yet the use which major authors like Shakespeare and Donne made of the literary testament shows that it had become an established form in the 16th century. The texts under examination here would normally be referred to as courtly love poems, political pamphlets, jests, cook-books, nursery rhymes, epic poems, autobiographical verse (Chatterton's Will), modern poems (yeats, Auden and McNeice) or as parts of masques, plays or novels. The aim is to show that one can legitimately speak of all these texts as belonging to a single literary category. In addition to adescription of the history of the literary testament in England, the central problem of this study was one of generic form. The attempt has been made to apply recent ideas of genre theory, i.e., the structuralist generative approach, to texts imitating a non-literary or utility document. This non-literary model is narrowly defined by criteria set by the Church and the Law. Thus it becomes possible to proceed as if the model were the generic norm of a corpus of greatly varying literary texts, thereby avoiding the problems of defming and re-defming selective principles (and of the need to assume a hypothetical 'first form') for the gathering of texts. The testament is a private re cord especially weil suited for studies of this kind because of its traditional fixed form and wide popularization from the Middle Ages onwards. In its complexity, the testament allows for more variation of style, content and purpose than does the letter, but is more disciplined in its form. In categorizing the testaments as such, it is necessary to study contemporary connotations and to defme the basic structure of the model. A selection of genuine, nonficticious testaments drawn up by members of the University of Cambridge in the 16th century has been examined for this purpose. (The 16th and 17th centuries can be taken as the most productive of literary testament writing.) There seems to exist a dichotomy in the testament itself; on the one hand there are mundane considerations (bequeathing of property) and on the other thoughts directed towards the life to come. Ihis dichotomy is observable not only on the content level, but also on the formal level and the semantic level. Ihe relation between the two testamentary elements, which is characterized by polarization, can be postulated as the basic structure of the testament and as the genre norm of the literary texts examined here. Taking into account the fact that the testament has been of varying importance in various ages, a wide selection of literary imitations of the testament from Chaucer to Yeats and after is studied in detail. A distinction may be drawn between mock testaments and serious imitations, with the former representing rebellion against the exalted authorities behind the testament. When the theoretical rebellion coincides with the practical function of satire or attack in a particular case, then the mock testament is raised to a true literary form. The serious imitation, on the other hand, makes use of the metaphysical element of the testament, and is directed to a worldly being or to the 'human condition' (as in examples drawn from the modern poets). Its problems and aim assign this study to the wider fjeld of genre research, particularly research into the relationship between genuine documents (utility texts) and their literary imitations.
; Enlightenment paves the way for modernity; the critical reflection upon literature in the 18th century is considered the birth of modern literary criticism. This thesis analyses the literary criticism of Giuseppe Baretti. The textual corpus consists of five works. Particular attention is dedicated to the presentation of text models of literary critique: apology, satire and dialogue as well as other forms of polemic literary criticism are presented as primary forms for representing 18th century literary critique. Baretti's apology of Shakespeare reflects the literary battle between Baretti and Voltaire. However, its importance results even more from the critique on the supremacy of the French 'doctrine classique'. The critique on authors in Baretti's ''Literary Scourge'' foreshadows modern literary criticism, whereas his invectives, literary feuds and pamphlets represent 18th century polemics. These polemical writings do not only show Baretti's antipathy to Bowle, Goldoni, Sharp and Voltaire, they also express his displeasure about Italy's literary and cultural marginal position. As Baretti operates within the English, French, Spanish and Italian literary community his works are also significant for imagology as they express the increasing consciousness of cultural diversity. The analysis demonstrates the insuperable constraints between Baretti and Voltaire and the whole 'doctrine classique', as well as the parallels between Baretti and English literature and culture. The analysis shows that Baretti's criticism is not based upon coherent theoretical criteria and that personal resentment influences his critiques. On balance, Giuseppe Baretti uses his criticism as a tool for literary and cultural aims. ; This study examines eight narratives of Indian captivity in German published in Europe and North America from the late 17th to the late eighteenth century. The corpus of texts used in this study consists of the captivity narratives of Quentin Stockwell, Jonathan Dickinson, Richard Falconer, William and Elizabeth Fleming, Marie le Roy and Barbara Leininger, Abraham Urssenbacher, a young English officer, and Regina Leininger. These narratives were either translated from English into German or written in German for German audiences in 18th-century North America and Europe. This study argues that German immigrants to colonial Pennsylvania created their own version of this popular genre to serve their own purposes. The origins, causes, varieties and functions of attitudes, images and stereotypes expressed in the narratives are investigated and put into context with diverse cultural documents. Thus the development and dynamics of the negotiation of cultural identities, and the impact on the way America was perceived by Germans in America and Europe, who are linked by a cross-Atlantic reading culture, are shown. The study examines the various editions of the captivity narratives, specifically regarding typography and morphology, and identifies the source texts of translations. The analysis of further German-Americana and research in the history of printing and publishing produced a historical and linguistic framework for the findings. With this the relations between source and target text are determined and evaluated. Translational deviations are identified, their causes are determined and their consequences are described, thus contributing to the history of German-American translation activities. The references inscribed in and the responses to the narratives published under Frontier conditions in 18th-century Pennsylvania illustrate the history of cultural and political integration of German immigrants. This study also explores the strategies of international communication by investigating captivity narratives in their European literary and political contexts. It shows that the texts were altered not only according to diverse European national demands, but also at the discretion of publishers and translators, transporting images and stereotypes through a variety of printed media (i.e. anthologies, journals, travel-literature, etc.).This study argues for a parallel development of the genre both in English and German. Whereas most of the narratives examined share a moral of religious viewpoint typical for the environment they were created in, they also reflect the European developments in literature and philosophy at the time.
; The collected volume at hand introduces mostly well-known authors from the early modern era – such as Christine de Pizan, Marie de Gournay, or Mary Astell – from the new perspective of the political history of ideas. The presentation of a European perspective suggested by the book's title is, however, missing; the volume examines only English and French authors. The question as to which advantages are offered by the approach from the perspective of women's and not gender history is answered only unsatisfactorily. Therefore, the book serves at best as an initial introduction to a field that needs further examination.
; Literature in Germany was long characterized by a division between West and East, which many are now trying to overcome. Since 1989, there have been new attempts to peacefully reunify literature, such as the introduction of two new literary prizes, namely the German Book Prize (Deutscher Buchpreis) and the Leipzig Book Fair Prize (Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse). From the very beginning, the two have - thanks to the public success of the awarded works - established themselves as canon-forming authorities, influencing both the book market and literary criticism. This article attempts to investigate the role and structure of these prizes as a political-economic 'agent in the cultural economy' (James F. English 2005). In addition, I will also examine how these two awards enable the inclusion of individual works in the ruling canon by acting as material means of an 'invisible-hand-phenomenon' (Simone Winko 2002), and how they are used to produce texts called 'classics of today'.
