In his History of Greece, George Grote celebrates the Athenian democracy and considers it an exemplary political regime. Grote despises oligarchy and believes that Athenian popular sovereignty has put an end to factional struggles. In particular, the reform of the courts ensured respect for the law and prevented the strongest and richest from taking power. However, the popular dikasteries were also an effective system for controlling and governing the subjects of the maritime empire. Grote compares the Athenian rule with the British Empire: both are governments of dependencies, in which the subdued states freely manage their internal affairs, but depend on the dominant state in foreign policy. The disputes between Athens and its allies were discussed in the Athenian courts where, according to Grote, the Greeks found fairness and tolerance, and were thus rewarded for the loss of their autonomy. ; Nella History of Greece George Grote celebra la democrazia ateniese e la considera un regime politico esemplare. En este artículo se confronta el pensamiento de Georges Canguilhem (1904-1995) con el problema biopolítico de las discapacidades. La discapacidad constituye un pujante ámbito de activismo político y de investigación, concretado respectivamente en el Disability Right Movement y en los Disability Studies. En este terreno compiten dos modelos rivales de análisis: el modelo biomédico y el modelo social. Se trata de demostrar que la obra de Canguilhem proporciona herramientas conceptuales que permiten superar esa dicotomía. La demostración presentada tiene en cuenta los cambios en la trayectoria intelectual del filósofo francés, y está dividida en tres momentos: epistemológico, ontológico y ético político. ; ABSTRACT In this article, we confront the thought of Georges Canguilhem (1904-1995) with the biopolitical problem of disabilities. Disability is an emerging field of political activism and research, embodied respectively in the Disability Right Movement and the Disability Studies. In this field, there are two rivals competing models of analysis: the biomedical model and the social model. It is shown that the work of Canguilhem provides conceptual tools to overcome this dichotomy. The demonstration presented takes into account changes in the intellectual history of the French philosopher, and is divided into three stages: epistemological, ontological and ethical-political.

Elias Canetti described George Grosz as one more of the characters that Grosz appeared to criticize. This article takes a deeper look at the works and texts through which, between 1919 and 1921, Grosz stripped Expresionism of its mysticism, inverted the Dadaist nihilism, and, made the motifs of Metaphysics a means of political denouncement. Nevertheless, under the aggressive politicalization of his art, Grosz questioned the movements of the masses whatever its tendency was. Here we scrutinize the contradictions of this verism that more than answering to the Call to Order took pleasure in slicing into disorder.

El objetivo de la investigación es reconstruir el espacio lógico y el contenido (articulado o articulable) de la noción de transgresión tal y como es expuesta por Georges Bataille en "El erotismo" (1957) a partir de sus dos influencias teóricas fundamentales en lo que refiere a este punto: la teoría de la fiesta desarrollada por Roger Caillois (1939), y el modelo del sacrificio como lo entienden Marcel Mauss y Henri Hubert (1899). A partir de estas fuentes teóricas sostenemos que la noción batailleana de la transgresión ritual puede ser comprendida como el dispositivo privilegiado de contención de la tensión social, mecanismo que permite regular la reintroducción de la violencia -aquella que había sido separada para que la sociedad tuviese lugar- abriendo paso al mantenimiento, la renovación y la reproducción del ordenamiento social.

On March 2022, a few days after the first strikes of the Russian army on Ukrainian territory began, Time Magazine published a special issue on the topic with the title "The Return of History", subtitled "How Putin Shattered Europe's Dreams". As a backdrop, the cover featured a full-page, almost black and white photograph of a military tank with six soldiers looking straight into the camera. Although the phrase was most likely meant metaphorically and is obviously hyperbolic, the cover did express what seemed to be a widespread sentiment: something important had changed, and (Western) Europe was confronted with a reality it had deemed long gone, or at least, safely restrained. For those of us attentive to discourses around history, however, this cover – as many comments and declarations by analysts, journalists and politicians which followed a similar pattern – tapped into fundamental questions about how events are framed in specific temporal and spatial narratives.

The article considers Julian Barnes' novel Arthur and George (2005) as an outstanding case study of the presence of justice and the law in contemporary neo-Victorian fiction. The novel is a biofiction on Arthur Conan Doyle's commitment to campaigning in favour of George Edalij, an unjustly imprisoned young solicitor of Parsee origins, in a legal case that led to the institution of the Court of Appeal in 1907. Arthur and George engages with some crucial tropes of the Victorian novel, notably the nexus between testimony, evidence, knowledge and truth, which sustains the thematic core of the novel, and the epistemological concern with knowledge and belief. The novel subtly addresses issues of national identity, cultural and political ethos and renews Barnes' concern with the indeterminacy of truth and the difficulty of ever knowing the past.

Este artículo presenta el papel de Georges Dumas en el desarrollo de la psicología en Brasil durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Para ese momento, Francia tenía una gran influencia en el desarrollo cultural y científico brasileño, incluyendo el campo de la psicología. Georges Dumas tuvo una destacada presencia en Brasil, actuando como un guardián al elegir eruditos franceses para dar conferencias y clases en Brasil entre 1908 y 1940 como representante de la tradición cultural francesa. La bibliografía de Georges Dumas Traité de Psychologie, publicada entre 1900 y 1940, muestra una selección de los académicos brasileños que interactuaron con el autor. Se estudió el contexto político de los intercambios franco-brasileños y los nombres de los profesores que participaron en la misión francesa en Brasil en el campo de la psicología. La influencia cultural francesa en Brasil se interpreta como una estrategia destinada a contribuir a la solución de los problemas de Brasil, y que ayudó a cambiar la imagen de Brasil en Europa. Además, los intercambios científicos promovieron la extensión de la red diplomática francesa. ; This article presents the role of Georges Dumas in the development of Brazilian psychology in the first half of the twentieth century. France had at that moment a major influence on Brazilian cultural and scientific development, including the field of psychology. Georges Dumas had a prominent presence in Brazil, acting as a gatekeeper when choosing French scholars to give conferences and classes in Brazil between 1908 and 1940 as a representative of the French cultural tradition. The bibliography of Georges Dumas's Traité de Psychologie, published in 1922-1923, shows a selection of Brazilian scholars who interacted with the author 1900's ans 1940's. The political context of French-Brazilian exchanges and the names of professors involved in the French mission in Brazil in the field of psychology were studied. The French cultural influence in Brazil is interpreted as a strategy aimed at contributing to the solution of Brazilian problems, and it helped to change the image of Brazil in Europe. In addition, scientific exchanges promoted the extension of the French diplomatic network.
