(IAB).;;;"Five major groups of classic labour migrants' are established in Germany-Greeks, Italians, (ex-)Yugoslavs, Turks and Iberians, of which the largest single group are the Turks. There now are significant numbers of second-generation men and women from these origins in the German labour market. More recently they have been joined by a more diverse group of migrants from Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the (middle) East and Africa. In the first generation the labour-migrant groups had relatively low levels of education leading to marked ethnic stratification within the labour market. This ethnic stratification continues in the second generation although on a reduced scale. While the second generation has acquired higher levels of education than the first, they still lag some way (the Turks especially so) behind native Germans in their education. Ethnic penalties in the labour market itself are also much reduced in the second generation, although significant penalties remain for Turks. However most of the continuing ethnic stratification is due to processes that operate prior to entry into the labour market." (author's abstract, IAB-Doku).

"This chapter looks at gendered rhetoric of the peace movement of the early 1980s in West Germany, characterized as the largest social movement ever in that country and around the world. After reviewing the development of West German pacifism in the context of the Cold War in the preceding decades, the piece looks to the ways in which gendered rhetoric played a significant, positive role in bringing the range of feminists together, and in bringing enormous numbers of West Germans into activism. The article also traces some of the more negative aspects of this rhetoric, surprisingly consistent across the range of constituent organizations. On the one hand, the gendered language implies and perhaps reveals some problematic views of West German identity and history, particularly through notions of 'victimization'. On the other hand, this very language may also have contributed to the movement's ultimate lack of success in preventing missile deployment, also in part by emphasizing West German citizens' 'victim' role." (ICE)

The authors separate fact from myth in an analysis of the role of the West in the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election. After addressing the reasons for Western interest in the Ukraine, the authors discuss the basic tenants of EU & US Ukraine policy. Specific policies addressed include; western support of local NGOs, public relations assistance to Yanukovych, international observation missions, & crises mediation during the Orange Revolution. The author concludes with an analysis of the motives & interests of the US & EU. Tables. J. Harwell
Examines the improvement in women's educational attainment across cohorts & its influence on the process of family formation in West Germany, based on data from the German Socioeconomic Panel, a representative longitudinal database for the former West Germany. An exponential model is used to specify the rates of entry into marriage & motherhood as a function of time-constant & time-dependent covariates. It is found that women's average levels of educational attainment have steadily risen from one birth cohort to another, & enrollment in the educational system has extended over the life-course. It is concluded that women's educational attainment accounts in part for changes in family formation. 10 Tables, 3 Figures, 27 References. M. Wagner

This chapter examines regional & domestic cleavages that have occurred as a result of responses to the Bush strategy of preventive war. The types of responses -- support, resistance, & internationalism -- are explored to assess the future of international relations. Tables. D. Miller

(IAB).
