Selbstoptimierung ist der in der Gegenwart derzeit am meisten diskutierte gesellschaftliche Trend. Diese ethische Einführung konzentriert sich auf die Selbstoptimierung im engen Sinn oder das "Enhancement", d.h. auf technikbasierte, vorwiegend biomedizinische Methoden zur menschlichen Selbstverbesserung im Unterschied zu traditionellen Methoden.
