This article begins with an overview of the current context for the delivery of social/welfare services and goes on to consider client–worker relationship boundaries that fall within and outside conventional ethical parameters in professional practice. Alternative interpretations of "relationship" are discussed, noting in particular what consumers of services have identified as being beneficial qualities demonstrated by professional "helpers." Using touch and adopting notions of compassion, love, and reciprocity are discussed, noting how these ideas collide with the current ethical thinking commonly used to guide Western social work practice. Finally, a reexamination of "professionalism" is proposed, including ways to facilitate worker–client connectivity. Throughout, the complex tensions between balancing ethical considerations with ideas relating to trust, risk, and authenticity are articulated.

'Die vorliegende Studie untersucht an drei Fallbeispielen das Zusammenspiel von Profession und Organisation sowie Patient und Familie. Ausgangspunkt ist die empirische wie theoretische Erkenntnis, dass die Art und Weise, in der Patienten und Professionelle im Krankenhaus miteinander kooperieren, von mehreren Faktoren abhängt: (1) vom Status der Professionellen, (2) von der Konfliktkultur innerhalb der Klinikhierarchie, (3) von der organisatorischen Struktur der Klinik und (4) vom familialen und milieuspezifischen Wissen der Professionellen. Hinsichtlich der Einbeziehung von Familienangehörigen in die Kooperationsbeziehung zwischen Professionellen und Patienten ist festzustellen, dass sich die Einbeziehung bisher eher auf Ausnahmen in einigen Versorgungsbereichen beschränkt, die alleinige Fokussierung auf den Patienten ist dagegen die Regel. Auch in Bereichen wie der Pädiatrie, in der die Familie letztlich konstitutiver Bestandteil von solchen Kooperationsbeziehungen ist, werden die Eltern eher als Störfaktor denn als Partner wahrgenommen. Es fehlt auf Seiten der Gesundheitsprofessionen neben den entsprechenden Wissensgrundlagen vor allem aber auch an organisatorischen Handlungsroutinen, mit denen die Familie in das Versorgungssetting integriert werden kann.' The development of rehabilitation relationships with persons with mental illness is a topic that has had limited attention in psychiatric rehabilitation literature. This research presents findings from in-depth interviews that were conducted with 10 psychiatric rehabilitation workers in Israel. Six of them were social workers, two were psychologists, and two were occupational therapists. Eight central components that characterize the development of rehabilitation relationships have been highlighted. These components indicate that the rehabilitation relationship is unconventional and differs in many ways from traditional therapeutic relationships. In addition, the challenge of coping with the conflicts and dilemmas which professionals encounter during the implementation of these components has been emphasized. The findings illuminate the need to develop a knowledge base that would prepare rehabilitation workers to cope with these difficulties and provide suitable professional training and supervision.

The relationship of professionals with families of children and adults with intellectual disabilities is a key component in the planning and delivery of effective and enduring support services. Yet, the history of such relationships is not well understood. After briefly describing the context for these relationships in the early 20th century, a thematic analysis is presented of correspondence between parents and professionals at one institution for people with intellectual disabilities during the early 1900s. The study concludes with a brief discussion of what we can learn from this troubled history to improve family/professional relationships.

• Summary: This article examines the relationships between welfare, law and managerialism as key discourses in social work with children and families. It draws on empirical research into the relationships between local authority social workers, social services managers and lawyers in child care work in England. • Findings: Tensions between social workers and lawyers have, in the past, been seen as symptoms of a wider clash between welfare and law as paradigmatic approaches to the regulation of social life and professional activity. Likewise, the rise of managers and managerialism has widely been portrayed as being in conflict with welfare values. The relationship between law and managerialism, meanwhile, has often been treated as unproblematic — simply two sides of the same coin, the increasing regulation of social work. This study reveals a more complex picture of on-going and unstable overlaps and tensions between the three professional groups and discourses. • Applications : The study points to a more fluid understanding of the relationships between welfare, law and managerialism in social work, one that recognizes the dynamic nature of the inter-discursive and inter-professional relationships. The character of contemporary child care social work is constructed and constrained through these multi-layered interactions.

Research has shown that afterschool programs are effective in improving academic performance, helping children develop better work habits and social skills, reducing the likelihood of at-risk behaviors, and decreasing school-based crime. Many agree that such results would not be prominent if it weren't for the supportive nature of children's relationships with staff. This manuscript presents a theoretical understanding of the connection between relationships and human growth and development. Observations of outstanding youth workers will show how relationships are used to leverage the development of young people. The author also provides a model of adult-as-community-builder that elaborates the specific methods by which youth workers create what is being called here, developmentally-responsive relationships. The manuscript ends with suggestions for enhancing the vitality of adult-youth connections and supporting the growth of youth professionals.

Abstract: The Department of Family Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, developed a Preparing Future Faculty and Family Professionals program to enrich the graduate education and professional development of its doctoral students. This article describes key elements of the program, including informing students about the responsibilities of faculty positions at diverse institutions, fostering faculty‐student mentoring relationships, visiting partner colleges/universities, examining requirements of nonacademic family science careers, and preparing students for the job search. Student and faculty evaluations of the program are summarized, and recommendations are made for graduate educators in family science.

This study was aimed at investigating if students and professionals in helping relationships were less alexithymic than those in nonhelping relationships and if professionals were less alexithymic than students. The study was also aimed at examining if the pattern of results for alexithymia
could be reproducible for psychological distress. The 270 individuals (undergraduates and professionals) completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (Bagby, Parker, & Taylor, 1994), the Psychiatric Symptom Index (Ilfeld, 1976), and a measure of social desirability (DS36; Tournois, Mesnil,
& Kop, 2000). As hypothesized, results showed that alexithymia was higher among the nonhelping relationship group than among the helping relationship group and decreased as vocational maturity increased. Most importantly, the magnitude of change was similar for both groups. A distinct
pattern of results was observed for psychological distress.

Given the central role of professional identity (i.e., collective self‐esteem in this study), the authors examined whether collective self‐esteem mediated or moderated relations between job dissatisfaction and client relationships in a sample of 132 professional counselors in the United States. Results indicated that collective self‐esteem partially mediated the relationship between job dissatisfaction and client relationships. Furthermore, job dissatisfaction was negatively related to greater levels of private collective self‐esteem, and greater private collective self‐esteem was positively related to better client relationships.

Early adversity can alter development of neurocognition, including executive cognitive and emotional regulatory functions. This is the first study to explore differential relationships between personal (physical and emotional abuse and neglect, school and parental stressors) and community (neighborhood problems and witnessing neighborhood violence) stressors and neurocognition. Predominantly Latino children ( n = 553) aged 10 to 12 years completed tasks measuring intelligence, impulsivity, problem solving, cognitive flexibility, decision making, and emotion attributions. Adjusting for age and parent education, bivariate regression analyses found exposure to personal stressors to be associated with relative deficits in at least one neurocognitive function. Community stressors were related to relative deficits in emotion attributions and problem solving. In multivariate analyses, neglect was related to misattributions of emotion and IQ deficits, and physical abuse was related to problem solving. Community stressors were not correlated with neurocognition when viewed relative to personal stressors. Stressor types were differentially associated with performance on specific neurocognitive tasks.

PurposeThe paper draws out the key conceptual, methodological and substantive issues raised in the papers around the politics of equalities.Design/methodology/approachRather than reviewing and summarising each paper in turn this introductory article synthesises the key themes from papers to develop an overview of the key issues raised in the edited collection.FindingsThe papers trouble traditional dichotomies in equalities studies, suggesting complex and fluid relationships between states, activists and professionals. They also identify some key elements of current equalities work such as equalities framing, diversity interpretation and the negotiation of ambiguity produced through the seesaw of hope/failure characterising this work.Research limitations/implicationsThe collection highlights the continuing dearth of work around certain equalities strands, in particular, around sexualities and generation. It also suggests avenues for further work developing postcolonial analysis of equalities work in organisations.Originality/valueThe collection is unique in that it draws together current work crossing diverse national and sectoral contexts and from a range of equalities strands.
