Integrating geomechanical surveys and remote sensing for sea cliff slope stability analysis: the Mt. Pucci case study (Italy)
In: Natural hazards and earth system sciences: NHESS, Band 14, Heft 4, S. 831-848
ISSN: 1684-9981
Abstract. An integrated approach to the geomechanical characterization of coastal sea cliffs was applied at Mt. Pucci (Gargano promontory, Southern Italy) by performing field-based geomechanical investigations and remote geostructural investigations via a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS). The consistency of the integrated techniques allowed to achieve a comprehensive and affordable characterization of the main joint sets on the sea cliff slope. The observed joint sets were considered to evaluate the proneness of the slope to rock failures by attributing safety factor (SF) values to the topple- and wedge-prone rock blocks under three combined or independent triggering conditions: (a) hydrostatic water pressures within the joints, (b) seismic action, and (c) strength reduction due to weathering of the joint surfaces. The combined action of weathering and water pressures within the joints was also considered, resulting in a significant decrease in the stability. Furthermore, remote survey analyses via InfraRed Thermography (IRT) and Ground Based Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (GBInSAR) were performed to evaluate the role of the surveyed joint sets in inducing instabilities in the Mt. Pucci sea cliff. The results from the remote surveys: (i) GBInSAR monitoring revealed permanent displacements coupled to cyclic daily displacements, these last ones detected in certain sectors of the cliff wall; (ii) the thermal images allowed us to identify anomalies that correspond well to the main joints and to the slope material released due to recent collapses.

Dati di traffico telefonico e politiche urbane ; Mobile Phone Data and Mobility Policy
In: Caderno CRH: revista quadrimestral de ciências sociais, Band 20, Heft 51
ISSN: 1983-8239
INERTIAS AND TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE LABOR RELATIONS OF URUGUAY IN THE CORNERSTONE OF THE PROCESSES OF REGIONAL INTEGRATION Francisco Pucci This work intends to analyze the evolution of the labor relations in Uruguay, at the cornerstone of the productive restructuring processes that began to be developed starting from the constitution of regional markets in the Southern Cone. The hypothesis we support is that the transformations in the world of labor ocurred in Uruguay cannot be attributed only to the application of an economical or social model specific to development, but are enrolled in long term structural modifications, associated to changes in the social relations ocurred worldwide. However, the concrete evolution verified in labor relations is explained by the specific characteristics of the processes of regional integration that are expressed in the conformation of MERCOSUL. KEYWORDS: MERCOSUL, restructuring, actors, negotiation, work. The lady of Sing Sing: an American countess, an Italian immigrant, and their epic battle for justice in New York's Gilded Age
"In 1895, an Italian seamstress in New York was accused of killing the man who had raped her, promised to marry her, and was about to abandon her. Following a sensational trial conducted in a language she could not understand, Maria Barbella, at the age of twenty-two, became the first woman sentenced to die in the newly invented electric chair. Idanna Pucci tells this story with immediacy, passion and authority that no other author could have mustered, since Pucci is the great-granddaughter of Cora Slocomb, the American-born Italian aristocrat whose ingenious advocacy saved Maria's life. The result is not only a crime story with all the fury and pathos of classic opera, but a perceptive study of an earlier generation's attitudes toward immigrants, capital punishment, and a woman's right to reject the role of victim"--
The Anatomy of Stalinist Police States
In: Journal of Cold War studies, Band 23, Heft 4, S. 95-123
ISSN: 1531-3298
Abstract
This article examines the building of Communist surveillance networks in Czechoslovakia and Poland in the early 1950s, focusing on the methods employed by the operational divisions of the secret police in these countries and their system of "preventative policing," and shows how the secret police networks shaped the information reaching Communist party leaders and Soviet advisers in East-Central Europe during the Stalinist period. By examining how the regimes collected information on the economy, religious institutions, higher education, and other areas of everyday life, the article traces how blanket surveillance networks became more institutionalized, insular, and scripted over time, hindering the state's ability to collect and process meaningful information. These problems were symptomatic of larger informational barriers facing Soviet-style regimes.
