Forms of group identity play a prominent role in everyday lives and politics in northeast Africa. Case studies from Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya illustrate the way that identities are formed and change over time, and how local, national, and international politics are interwoven. Specific attention is paid to the impact of modern weaponry, new technologies, religious conversion, food and land shortages, international borders, civil war, and displacement on group identities. Drawing on the expertise of anthropologists, historians and geographers, these volumes provide a significant account of a society profoundly shaped by identity politics and contribute to a better understanding of the nature of conflict and war, and forms of alliance and peacemaking, thus providing a comprehensive portrait of this troubled region

Anhand einer ethnografischen Studie und einer Untersuchung der öffentlichen und populären Kultur in Hargeisa, Somaliland, reflektiert diese Dissertation (a) die Forschung über Somaliland als neuen Nationalstaat, der als Enklave des Friedens und der Stabilität in einer chaotischen Region gefeiert wird, und (b) nutzt Somaliland, um den "sezessionistischen Nationalismus" als konzeptionell-analytisches Paradigma einzuführen und zu theoretisieren. Während er die politische Reife Somalilands anerkennt und feiert, weist er auf eine zeitliche Begrenzung hin und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass Somaliland, weil es die Bilder von Krieg und Gewalt - die Somalia direkt vereiteln - in seinem populären und öffentlichen Bewusstsein beibehält, nicht nur um seinen [vermeintlichen] Feind herumgewickelt ist, sondern sich auch dann noch im Krieg befindet, wenn die Waffen verstummt sind. Mit der Einführung von "de-imagined communities" nach Benedict Anderson untersucht die Arbeit Somaliland neben Pakistan, dem Südsudan, Eritrea und anderen postkolonialen Sezessionsbewegungen und argumentiert, dass sich der sezessionistische Nationalismus diametral von früheren Manifestationen des Nationalismus unterscheidet, da er die sezessionistisch-nationalistische Intelligenz mit einer anderen Reihe von Auseinandersetzungen konfrontiert, die eine neue Grammatik erfordern, um ihn zu begreifen.

BackgroundTinnitus prevalence studies report large variability across countries that might be due to inconsistent research methods. Our study aimed to report a single Pan-European estimate for tinnitus prevalence and investigate the effect of individual and country-level characteristics on prevalence. We explored the relationships of healthcare resource use and hearing difficulty with tinnitus symptoms.MethodsBetween 2017-2018, a cross-sectional European Tinnitus Survey (ETS) was conducted in 12 European Union nations (Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Spain), using a standardised set of tinnitus-related questions and response options in country-specific languages. We recruited 11,427 adults aged ≥18 years.FindingsPrevalence of any tinnitus was 14·7% (14·0% in men and 15·2% in women), ranging from 8·7% in Ireland to 28·3% in Bulgaria. Severe tinnitus was found in 1·2% participants (1·0% in men and 1·4% in women), ranging from 0·6% in Ireland to 4·2% in Romania. Tinnitus prevalence significantly increased with increasing age and worsening of hearing status. Healthcare resource use for tinnitus increased with increasing tinnitus symptom severity.InterpretationThis is the first multinational report of Pan-European tinnitus prevalence using standardised questions. The overall prevalence estimates refine previous findings, although widespread inter-country heterogeneity was noted. The results indicate that more than 1 in 7 adults in the EU have tinnitus.
