I.F.A.N. was first established by the central government of l'Afrique Occidentale Française in 1936, as a successor to the Comité d'etudes historiques et scientifiques. At the time of the break-up of the A.O.F. federation, in March 1959, it became an Institute of the University of Dakar, and since then has been financed by the French Ministry of National Education.
