The study argues that forms of land expropriation, information gained through petitioning and outcomes of petitioning have influences on trust in the center. Specifically, there are three main arguments. Firstly, compared with land expropriation for public use, in participatory manners, and without negative influences on living security, land expropriation for commercial use, in imperative manners, and with negative influences on living security is more likely to cause petitioning. In the three forms of land expropriation, claims are hardly satisfied by local governments since they have surpassed the state rules. Secondly, during petitioning trust in the center changes in three phases: at the beginning, resisters distinguish the center from lower-level governments and retain high-level trust in the center. Secondly, activists gain increasing information about the center during times of petitioning to Beijing. They realize that the center has known their grievances, which are also worth its attention. Finally, failure of resistances results in decline of trust in the center's capacity as well as trust in its commitment. Thirdly, the declined trust in the center does not necessarily imply the demand for popular elections. Members of utopian communities are engaged in transformation projects and have chosen their utopian community as a strategic place from where to make a better world. Three communities are presented in ethnographic detail: 1. Life Chanyuan in China, which has attempted to promote free-love and communism as a short-cut to heaven but was finally closed down by the state, 2. Christiania in Denmark, a colorful political community standing for consensus democracy, the fight for freedom and urban space for all, a massive market for hashish, and a counter-cultural entertainment experience for visitors, and 3. Damanhur, an Italian esoteric community, whose members see themselves as warriors on a mission to rescue humankind. Further analysis shows that all these utopian communities act as distorted mirrors of their societies by addressing their societies' unresolved value contests. They are not just fictional fantasies of their founders. Intentional communities with utopian aspirations are presented as a regular social phenomenon related to social innovation and change and are shown to engage in historically specific conversation with their societies. Traditional studies on overseas Chinese focus on the relationship between overseas Chinese and KuoMinTang's revolutionary activities and highlight the importance of overseas Chinese to KMT revolution. However, these studies often ignore the relationship between overseas Chinese and revolutionary activities led by Chinese Communist Party. In the Chaoshan region, some of the emigrant communities, in order to attract overseas Chinese investment and develop cultural tourism, attempt to establish a "Red Emigrant Community" status through reconstructing the history of village's participating in CCP's revolution. ; "Red Emigrant Community", or Hongse qiaoxiang, is a cultural label linking emigrant communities and the State. This thesis, using Hougou village as an example explores how emigrant communities shape their own "red" history and culture. An important category of these photos are those taken by Westerners during the late Qing China. This thesis aims to investigate these subjects from a cultural historical perspective, the photos are thus considered as a form of representation instead of visual history materials, and a comparative approach was employed to discuss the complex relationship among photo image, imperialism, history narrating under the political structure of nation-state and China's contemporary social reality. ; Photographs which were taken by the Westerners during the late Qing China emerged in the age of European capitalism and imperialist expansion. After the year 1860, China was defeated by the British-French Alliance in the Second Opium War and the Qing government was forced to open up to the treat and culture of the west. This change attracted Westerners of different occupations, including commercial photographers, explorers and journalists, to photograph various geographical and social aspects that are of their interests. With considerable developments in the world system marking changes in the policing of national borders and politics of citizenship, it is of some significance to understand the processes that drive the motivations and trace the realities of over fifty million irregular migrants living in the world today. This research sheds light on the construction and realization of aspirations for irregular migration by examining cases of extralegal migrants in Hong Kong, where estimates suggest that 75 percent of the approximately 7,000 strong irregular non-Chinese migrant population comes from the South Asia. Despite Hong Kong's close connections to the subcontinent since the city's establishment as a British colony in 1841, this particular phenomenon dates back only ten years, stemming partially from strict changes in migration in the post-9/11 Euro-American West. ; In a society that is as ethnically homogenous as Hong Kong where the poorer non-Chinese immigrants clearly stand out and are open to social and political injustice, why do these migrants still come? 精神分裂症(簡稱精分)是一種常見且嚴重的精神疾病,它對患者及其家人的生活有著毀滅性的影響。在西方國家,研究者已經對精分患者子女的經歷研究了許多年,得出的結論在政府以及社會工作者幫助這些家庭時起到重要的參考作用。然而,在中國這個問題被忽視了,目前針對這個群體的、學術規範的研究還沒有在中國大陸展開。鑒於中西巨大的社會和文化差異,我們不可以照搬西方學者的研究成果。為了填補這方面的知識空缺,我們在上海展開了對精神分裂症患者子女經歷的質化研究。 ; 本文的資料來自八個家庭的成員對於相關經驗的敘述。我們從三個層面來探究這些青少年的特殊經歷,包括他們對家長的經歷、他們從患病與健康家長處感受到的養育模式、以及他們所經歷的擴展家庭和社會的支持。 ; 我們的研究發現包括:1)青少年對家長疾病的適應經歷了三個階段:漠然、焦慮、消極應對。2)患病家長大多對孩子溫暖有餘、管教不足。健康家長對孩子的管教很大程度上取決於家庭經濟情況。當經濟情況惡劣時他們往往忽視孩子的成長需求3)支援系統作用缺失。 ; 基於以上發現,本文提煉出三個主題:在惡劣成長環境中掙扎、消極應對、缺乏支持。我們提倡為這些家庭提供社會服務。 ; Schizophrenia is a serious and common mental illness which has devastating effects on those affected by schizophrenia, as well as family members including their offspring. In western countries, the topic about the experience of offspring living with a parent diagnosed with schizophrenia has been studied for many years. The outcomes are useful references to the government and social workers in helping these families. However, this topic has been neglected in the Chinese context. A well-designed qualitative study has never been carried out in mainland China. The result from western researcher cannot be used in China due to the vast differences in society and culture. To fill in the gap, a qualitative research was carried out in Shanghai to study children's experience of parental schizophrenia. ; This paper is based on the narratives elicited from eight families, including the parents diagnosed with schizophrenia, the adolescent children, and sometimes other family members. We studied the experience of this special group of adolescents, which contains the experience of their parent's mental illness, the parenting from both the parent diagnosed with schizophrenia and the healthy parent, as well as the support from extended family and the society. ; Our findings include: 1) Adolescents' attitude towards parental schizophrenia can be divided into three phases: indifference, anxiety, and finally passive coping. 中國大陸的電影審查是在意識形態領域對文化工業所施加的國家控制,以確保後者能夠服務於整體性的國家目的。20 世紀 80 年代中期,原本主要承擔宣傳和教育功能的電影工業開始了國家主導的改革,並在新世紀被定位為"文化產業"後,其主體迅速向資本化、商業化和娛樂化發展。本文的目的就是研究在這一過程中,審查制度及其實踐的變遷與延續,特別是要追問它在制度上沿襲了毛澤東時代基本框架和不放棄意識形態控制的同時,為什麼可以容納文化產業化電影工業的發展。為此,我選擇了生產研究(production study)路徑,從"結構-行動者"(structure-agent)的分析框架出發,以對電影人和審查者的訪談材料為基礎,綜合多種途徑搜集到的一手和二手資料,聚焦於這些行動者審查與自我審查的日常實踐,以及支撐他們實踐活動的信條(belief)和話語(discourse)體系。我認為問題關鍵在於改革過程中國家自身的分化。首先,國家控制電影工業的出發點從單一的政治目的,多元化為經濟、政治和文化三重目的。其次,隨著國家目的多元化,主要考慮政治問題的審查權力機構和兼顧經濟與文化發展的審查執行機構在利益和立場上的分化進一步加深。這些使國家控制本身出現了一定的彈性(flexibility),給電影工業有限的發展空間。這種彈性主要表現在兩個方面:一是審查標準上"去政治化的政治"原則;二是審查制度設計及其實踐上的"結構的不確定性"。前者代表了國家意識形態控制的原則,後者是具體的控制手段。因此,本研究同時也處理了中國國家在後社會主義轉型過程中,國家控制的性質及其運作機制的問題。 ; In China, censorship system of the film industry is ideological control of the state, for ensuring later can serve the object of the former. From the mid 1980s, the film industry begun to reform by the state, and it became one of the "cultural industries" in the beginning of the new millennium from the tool for propaganda and education, as well as is being capitalized and commercialized quickly. ; The purpose of this thesis is to study the change and continuity of this censorship system and its practice during this period, as well as to answer the question why this censorship system can allow such kind of development, while this system still follows the basic framework of the one in Mao's era and does not give up the goal of ideological control. ; So, methodologically, I chose the production study approach and structure-agent analytical framework. Basing on the interviews of filmmakers and reviewers, as well as other first-hand and secondary materials, this thesis focus on the agents' practice of censorship and self-censorship, as well as the belief and discourse system behind these practice. From the late 60's to the mid 70's, young writers and editors in Hong Kong responded to and engaged in local and oversea political incidents and social movements by running magazines that demonstrated various identity explorations and literary practices. Some of them identified with China through various means while some developed trans-regional identification by engaging in overseas student movements and culture, and nurtured a distinctive literary practice by integrating ethnic identification and anti-colonial discourse. Toward the end of "the fiery years", those young writers and editors who identified with China also tried to adjust their self-positioning of identity and direction of literary practice. This dissertation attempts to illustrate the various identity and literary explorations by examining representative publications including Pangu, Wenxue yu meishu, Wenmei yuekan and the 70's Biweekly. ; This dissertation contains five chapters. This thesis discusses the evolution and change of the court theatre institution throughout the Qing Dynasty. In the contexts of court entertainment, political activities and cultural policy, the creation and performance history of the grand theatre piece, Zhaodai xiaoshao, or The Glorious Music of a Brilliant Age, from the Qianlong-Jiaqing to the Guangxu period serve as an adequate example. In this case study, we can explore the nature of the Qing emperors and Empress Dowager Cixi, state ideology and the construction of the Empire's image. ; Most existing research in Qing court drama and theatre focuses on the Qing emperors' great passion for theatre, the three-tiered grand stage in the imperial palace and the wealth of props and costumes, as well as the repertoire change in the late Qing, especially the formation and development of Jingju or Peking Opera. This thesis arguesthat given its rich contents and relevant contexts, the Qing court theatre deserves far more research both in breadth and in depth. Ding's medical ideas and practices as the founder of the Shanghai Medical Bookstore exactly mirrored the popularization and commercialization of medical knowledge in modern China. Focusing on the popularization of medical knowledge, this thesis explains how Ding--an educated man born in a traditional Chinese culture--could make use of political power, marketing and social networks to achieve success with a career of producing and disseminating modern medical knowledge. This process also reflected the relationship between Ding's medical knowledge and his conceptions of the body with his philosophy of life; while further illuminating the conflicts and compromises in the Chinese medical circles of the time. This work is primarily based on medical books and journals produced by Ding Fubao during the Late Qing and Republican eras, from the collections of libraries in Beijing and Shanghai. ; Ding Fubao and the Medical Bookshop he established in Shanghai dominated the medical book market in China from 1909 to around 1915. Its originality lies in its intimate relation with the particular social and economic conditions of China. This thesis focuses on "Chineseness" in Chinese rock, which covers musical characteristics, political identity, traditional and ancient culture and regional performing arts. In order to demonstrate its historical development, I choose and discuss three musical acts from each decade in Chinese rock history. They are Cui Jian in the 1980s, Tang Dynasty in the 1990s and Second Hand Rose after 2000. ; Widely regarded as the forerunner of Chinese rock, Cui Jian's music has a "red" ideology; meanwhile, his brave expression of the inner youth voice of that generation also give Chinese rock a rebellious image from the very beginning. Tang Dynasty represents Chinese rock's "golden age". Through invoking a glorious period in China's ancient history, they build an ideal Chinese masculinity in their style of heavy metal. By expanding the breadth, diversity and sheer number of copyrighted works in existence, the internet has fundamentally changed the nature of copyright markets. ; This thesis attempts to argue that the laws in Mainland China should reserve enough space for information technologies to develop, without unreasonably prejudicing the interests of copyright holders. ; This thesis contends that the utilitarian justification for copyright plays an underlying role in both Chinese copyright legislation and judicial application. From an overview of its ten-year publication and circulation, it is clear that the gazette was born to serve the late Qing reform, and publicizing and reporting on the reform became its top priority. This thesis aims at studying the reform through textual and contextual analyses of the Beiyang Gazette. In details, the author first investigates the background of the gazette as the mouthpiece of the reform, to understand the unique political culture of the reform under the Beiyang authorities in the late Qing. This study also traces the textual links between the new-style Beiyang Gazette and other contemporary newspapers. Second, the thesis examines the Bureau of the Beiyang Gazette in length. 提升學前教育的機會與品質成為世界趨勢,近年來中國大陸政府在普及學前教育進程中逐漸關注並出臺政策以保障和監控教育品質,這對幼兒園教師提出高績效表現的素質要求。然而,實踐一線的教師們面臨著國家和市場的雙重期待,究竟如何看待自己?又如何為職業賦予了什麼樣的意義? 本研究借助詮釋性互動和符號互動論為理論視角,採用質化研究的取向,以北京為實地研究範圍,選取33名幼兒園教師和3名管理者,就其對身為教師的理解與詮釋展開深入訪談,輔之以文檔收集和實地觀察,探討幼兒園教師為職業賦予意義的過程。本研究主要有以下發現: ; 首先,影響幼兒園教師身份的三種結構性力量分別是國家權力、市場話語和性別文化。這三種力量共同交織,巧妙地將幼兒園教師群體置於弱者之境,導致幼兒園教師身份空間被擠壓、身份異化和性別化。其次,符號互動論視角下,幼兒園教師身份構建就是幼兒園教師與他人進行外部互動和與自我進行內部互動的過程。不同工作情境下的幼兒園教師身份構建呈現三種不同的路徑:外部主導型、內部主導型以及內外兼顧型,從而構建出不同類型的幼兒園教師身份:保姆與廉價勞動力、有特色的專業工作者、我不是保姆而是___老師。最後,情緒在幼兒園教師身份構建中的作用表現在:情緒是身份的晴雨表、身份呈現的工具、身份承諾的動力及促進身份轉化的誘因。幼兒園教師在身份構建過程中情緒產生並嵌入其互動的工作情境中,與不同對象互動中呈現出不同的情緒地理。幼兒園教師情緒規則包括善於控制情緒,積極運用情緒,堅持微笑服務;其情緒勞動時間長、多樣性、強度大。他們並運用偽裝、抑制、自我勸服和釋放等情緒勞動策略。 ; 本研究對幼兒園教師身份構建的探討豐富了教師身份研究;並回應了關於教師身份構建的宏觀結構因素、身份構建機制以及身份構建中的情緒等學術討論;同時,提出幼兒園教師專業性中的情緒情感維度,即情緒性的專業性。最後,就政府幼教政策推行以及政府制定市場規則方面提出政策建議,並探討了對幼兒園管理實踐的啟示。 ; Improving the quality of preschool education has become a global trend. In recent years, the Chinese government has increasingly focused on universalizing preschool education in the country, launching policies to guarantee high-quality education. Rigorous requirements have also been implemented to maintain the caliber of preschool teachers. In this context, how do front-line teachers in Mainland China understand their teacher identities amid the objectives set by the state and the market for them? How do they make sense of their careers? Informed by the interpretive and symbolic interactionism perspectives, this multiple-case qualitative study examines how preschool teachers in Mainland China construct their professional identities and how they understand and interpret the roles of preschool teachers.
