Examines the impact of the Catholic Church's shift to the right on progressive Catholic projects in poor neighborhoods of the Penalolen district of Santiago, Chile. The church's evolution from the progressive "Option for the Poor" to the conservative "Evangelization of Culture" is described, along with personal accounts of how this change affected poor Catholics. Information was obtained from a case study of a Catholic parish that included interviews with 15 priests & numerous lay members. The priests agreed that the change occurred without any dramatic confrontations. Conservative lay members welcomed the shift back to traditional catechetical Catholicism, while progressive lay members began to act as conscientized Catholics outside the umbrella of the church. A theoretical evaluation of the experience of the Chilean church analyzes the sources of the struggle over the Catholic Church, including intrainstitutional conflicts. Der Beitrag widmet sich den "silent citizens" in Frankreich, also den Leuten, die nicht wählen und nicht am aktiven politischen Leben teilnehmen. Insbesondere fallen hierunter jene, die wahrscheinlich auch an keiner Befragung teilnehmen, Personen aus dem populären Milieu. Der Begriff fasst Individuen zusammen, die sich in der Lage von Ausführenden befinden, die bei der Arbeit von anderen beherrscht werden und die außerdem sozial und ökonomisch angreifbar sind. Mittels qualitativer Interviews wird u. a. gefragt: Wann und mit wem sprechen diese Probanden über Europa? Für viele ist dies außerhalb des außergewöhnlichen Kontextes dieser Interviews niemals der Fall. Der Großteil der Befragten pflegt eine Bewertung aus der Distanz der europäischen Realitäten, die sehr schwach positiv und vor allem negativ ausgeprägt ist. Die Autoren unterscheiden innerhalb des populären Milieus drei Gruppen: die Politisierten, die mit einer ambivalenten Beziehung zu Europa und die Gruppe der Europa-Fremden, die kaum über Wissen verfügt und deshalb nicht in der Lage ist, Fragen zu Europa zu beantworten. Discusses the impact of conceptual & methodological decisions on the nature, assumptions, & conclusions of anthropological studies of youth & children's culture. Traditionally, studies of cultural meaning have focused on the particular characteristics of the adult male population & have thereby denied cultural agency to marginalized groups, eg, women & children. However, modern anthropology has attempted to overcome this bias, & it is argued that the productive study of children's cultures demands a more dynamic & relational perspective that defines culture as a product of diverse signifying practices rather than a strictly bounded entity. Within this framework, the potential of children to produce & transform their own social lives is not limited to the boundaries of mainstream male society. The often arbitrary distinctions between the categories of children's & youth culture are discussed. Drawing on fieldwork in Ontario & Nova Scotia, it is concluded that researchers must become more aware of how they define & thereby limit the agency of youth & children's cultures through their methodological & conceptual choices. 33 References. An exploration of "cumulative narrative" focuses on the story of the abduction of Samantha Mulder, FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder's younger sister, on the TV series, The X-Files. Perusal of the recurring Samantha theme over the seven seasons aired in the UK through 2000 notes that Fox Mulder's pursuit of answers related to the X-files is motivated by his desire to discover the truth behind his sister's abduction. The Samantha narrative is considered in light of both a "popular culture of conspiracy," which involves the production, circulation, & consumption of conspiracy theories in popular culture, & the "conspiracy of popular culture," which centers on how "fringe knowledges" about things like alien abductions achieve mass exposure & popularity. The X-Files includes the essential elements of conspiracy theories while emphasizing the search for "truth," but it is just one of many pop-cultural products with conspiracy at its core. Theodor Adorno's (1994) astrological readings are drawn on to examine the knowledge, commodity, & culture forms/functions that help to shape the current landscape of conspiracy. 25 References. J. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht, in welcher Weise sich die politische Kultur der Bundesrepublik seit den 50er Jahren, als Gabriel Almond und Sidney Verba ihre klassische Studie "Civic Culture" durchführten, geändert hat. Diskutiert wird das "Beweismaterial" für die Behauptung eines deutschen "Sonderwegs" und eines spezifisch deutschen "Nationalcharakters". Anhand von den Ergebnissen von Umfrageforschungen wird dabei geklärt, ob die Deutschen nationalistischer sind als andere Völker, ob sie seit Gründung der Bundesrepublik demokratischer geworden sind sowie ihre Einstellungen zum Nationalsozialismus und Antisemitismus und die Einstellungen gegenüber Ausländern andererseits. Die Frage, ob sich die deutsche politische Kultur einer "Civic Culture" angenähert hat, ist anhand der Umfragedaten und entgegen dem manchmal aufgeregten Tenor der Medien eindeutig zu bejahen. Allerdings ist die deutsche Gesellschaft nach der Vereinigung fragmentierter geworden. Sie ist im Sinne E.K. Scheuchs am besten als das "patchwork" eines nur lose gekoppelten Systems mit hohen Schwellen der Indifferenz zwischen den einzelnen Funktionsbereichen und deren Eliten zu beschreiben. (pmb)

The UK Arts Council subsidization & encouragement of the arts must fit within the fine line of "facilitating, rather than controlling, enabling rather than patronizing." The arts are a powerful force in civil society & of economic importance because of their place in the global economy driven by new information technologies. The community arts movement has recognized that enjoyment of the arts, once confined to the educated & wealthy, must reach the general population. Maintaining competitiveness means stimulating creativity within all UK citizens, but subsidization of amateur & community-based culture increases the danger of encroaching on its voluntary character. A "lighter regulatory touch" may involve technology & education. Participation in the growing power of the technologies can encourage interactive relationships & creative engagement in the arts. Giving greater space in the educational curriculum for creativity is necessary for economic competitiveness & the formation of participative citizenship. L. A. Hoffman

In ihrem zugrundeliegenden religiösen Schema "ist die Materie der Notwendigkeit unterworfen, das Gegebene, das nicht weiter Zurückführbare, das Übernatürliche aber gibt ihr eine Bedeutung für die Seele, die sich nach der Wahrheit sehnt." Der Autor fragt, wie der Übergang von diesen "schönen Gedanken" über die Kulturrevolution zur Umsetzung im täglichen Leben des Proletariers und des Bauern von Simone Weil konzipiert wird. Presents four conceptual frameworks that draw on different theoretical traditions of cultural theory to relate culture to collective action, using examples from the women's movement, in particular, the lesbian feminist movement, as illustrations. The four frameworks are labeled as emergent norms & interpretive frameworks, collective identity, ritual, & discourse. The emergent norms framework, which stems from the symbolic interactionist tradition, is described as emphasizing the ways in which challenging groups redefine normative frameworks to justify their mobilization efforts. Drawing on the Marxist tradition that focuses on class consciousness, other social movement scholars have developed a notion of collective identity to denote the ways in which shared group definitions are constructed as a vital component of grievance interpretation. Related to the study of collective identity is the recent concern with understanding ritual as the emotional dimension of social movements & the link between structural arrangements, culture, & personal feelings. Finally, the discursive framework emphasizes the ways in which language, ideas, & interpretations constitute social practices that are embedded within the institutional structure of social movements & the larger institutions in which they are situated. It is suggested that cultural analysis conducted through all of these frameworks must be attentive to the ways in which cultural meaning is linked to social protest, & thus, to issues of resources, power, & organization. Der Beitrag untersucht, in welcher Weise die gesellschaftliche Sicht auf Kinder von der Wahrnehmung, Kinder seien Schulkinder, beeinflusst wird. Darüber hinaus geht es auch um den Einfluss der Institution Schule selbst auf die außerschulischen Aktivitäten von Kindern. Außerdem werden Konzepte der Schulforschung und Kindheitsforschung der vergangenen Jahre diskutiert, die sich mit einer erweiterten Perspektive auf Kinder befasst haben, vor allem im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema der Chancengleichheit sowohl im Bereich der schulischen als auch außerschulischen Aktivitäten. Bei den Betrachtungen geht es um die Forderung an die Soziologie und Bildungsforschung, Schule nicht isoliert zu betrachten, sondern sie immer auch in Beziehung zu setzen zu informellen Lernprozessen. Anhand von rund vierzig Fallstudien in der westlichen Bundesrepublik wird die Filterwirkung der Schule aufgezeigt, die besagt, dass das Denken und Tun von Kindern auch außerhalb der Schule von schulischen Normen beeinflusst wird. Wünschenswert wäre in dieser Hinsicht eine gegenseitige Befruchtung der Schulforschung und der soziologischen Kindheitsforschung. (ICH).

Die amerikanische 'underclass'-Diskussion sowie verwandte Argumente in der deutschen und europäischen sozialpolitischen Debatte stehen jedoch vor veränderten Möglichkeiten der Überprüfung und besseren Datengrundlagen, die eine differenzierte Verwendung von kulturtheoretischen Erklärungen bei Armutslagen erforderlich machen." Cleary examines the forces that drive China's nuclear policy & the various considerations that shape its direction. The country's national security interests & strategic culture (primarily minimalism, strategic defense, & deliberate ambiguity) are reviewed, showing how they influence the preferences of the Chinese elite with regard to nuclear policy. Of considerable importance to the elite are comprehensive national power, the role of the Communist Party in China's overall development, & a stable security environment. While technology & the economy are not the constraints they once were in nuclear development, it is unlikely that they will be utilized to create a greater nuclear strike force. The country's aim seems to be modernization of its strategic capabilities &, eventually, development of a "small but modern nuclear war-fighting force.". J. Stanton

Explores the relationship between contemporary corporate culture & recent attempts to criticize its increasing growth & influence. Naomi Klein's critique of corporate culture, No Logo (2000), is drawn on to shed light on how cultural corporatism creates a third culture comprising brand names, brand people, & brand-made media. It is argued that capitalist institutions have always been a major site for conspiracy theory, & consumers become part of corporate conspiracy practices by consuming mass-produced objects. Popular forms of conspiracy theory & their links with societal trends are examined to illustrate how they relate to critical engagements with corporate culture & its products. A discussion of how global corporate culture manages to subsume "subvertising" that attempts to undermine the corporate message maintains that even the efforts of "culture jammers" are being incorporated into marketing campaigns, as exemplified by Nike's "I am not/A target market/I am an athlete" campaign. It is contended that contemporary critiques of corporate influence as a form of colonization run into difficulties because they require remembering a time before the occupation. 23 References. J.
