The author proposes, in the six essays of this her brand-new book, a reflection on the status of image in the contemporary world. Since the emergence of photography, and after cinema, the universe of technical images did not know a process of transformation as radical as that of our time. Images have become the main interfaces of daily mediation, occupying communication, affective relationships, infrastructure, surveillance aesthetics and body scan systems in the city. Speaking of image policies, she argues that images are, in addition to the transmission of ideas and languages, the very field of political tensions and disputes of today. Beiguelman associates the invention and massive distribution of smartphones with a new surveillance regime, no longer instituted by the state, but the result of the systematic capture of personal data, deliberately offered by users to social media platforms the datasphere. The countless production of images in the feeds and stories of social networks, surveillance cameras and official records configure, according to her, a new aesthetic of surveillance. Digital image, selfies, memes, image aging apps, Waze and Google Maps, deep fakes videos, body scanning, the internet of things, facial recognition machines, artificial intelligence, gable protest projections in cities, digital censorship, all these novelties from the contemporary world are analyzed by Giselle Beiguelman to describe (and even guide the reader to recognize in the world around him/her) the role of the image in social relations today
ABSTRACT. This article has as objective the understanding of the social actions performed by Lourival Soares da Silva, who stood out for a life dedicated to activism in the movements of rural workers acting for several years as president of the Rio das Pedras Settlement Association, in Uberlândia. To understand and analyze their actions, a qualitative, observational approach was used and also through semi-structured interviews, in the methodological perspective of oral history. The theoretical framework consisted of a combination of Max Weber's comprehensive sociology, which is based on the understanding of human conduct endowed with meaning, more specifically the rational action in relation to values, with Jürgen Habermas' theory of communicative action, centered on oriented actions by the intersubjective agreements that are revealed in language and communication. It is concluded that the meanings linked to the social actions carried out by the social movement leader are summarized in categories based on the values of equality, justice, right to work, dialogue, democracy and collective social action. These ethical and emancipatory standards are not limited to their finalistic aspect, or their results, but above all in the value of a daily course that is very present in the imagination of social movements. ; ABSTRACT. These ethical and emancipatory standards are not limited to their finalistic aspect, or their results, but above all in the value of a daily course that is very present in the imagination of social movements. ; We analyze how meaning is attributed to corporate social responsibility (CSR) by the markets, government, and actors from the civil society involved in aggregate mining in São Paulo. CSR is presented as fundamental for reducing the negative aspects and conflicts between representatives of society caused by mining. Little attention has been paid to the relationship between how different CSR interpretations emerge from interactions between multiple actors in the mining sector. Through a qualitative case study, 58 interviews were conducted with people representing civil society, the state, and the market. Additionally, document analysis and observation techniques enriched our data set. The paper reveals three interpretations of CSR among the groups studied: voluntary, environmental, and social. Based on the relationship between these interpretations of CSR, we can see a pattern in how those involved build meaning.
The present study sought to investigate, in the perspective of psychoanalytic clinic, a case study permeated by the specificities of the contexts of social urgency in the field of migration. Social urgency entails situations in which the lack of material conditions of a portion of people joins discourses that place the subject in positions of objectification, submission to the other in the social bond, therefore in situations of discursive helplessness (Rosa, 2016). The theoretical and clinical elaborations are based on the clinical experience that supported the construction of the clinical case of a child and their parents, Bolivians, marked by the consequences of slave labor and the child's autism diagnosis. Based on the movements arising from this case, we present the positions taken by the psychoanalyst facing a context in which the socio-political aspects of suffering articulate with situations of forced migration. This path converges in the effort to locate new approaches and psychoanalytic devices, which takes into account the subject position in the social bond, proposing significant changes vis-à-vis the demands addressed to the psychoanalytic clinic by institutional and social urgency contexts. In addition, we propose the notion of transferential network, as an instrument that guides the psychoanalyst's work with interinstitutional contacts, with professionals from other areas and with those who are in situations of social urgency.
Based on the axiological approach, it has been established that the moral-ethical orientations of the German society have been internalized in the minds of the ethnos and verbalized by the ethnosymbols. An ethnosymbol is a motivated, conventional linguistic sign with multiple meaning that embodies important cultural meaningful concepts. The reasons for the formation of ethnosymbols are the specificity and duration of interethnic contacts, social, political and economic conditions for the development of ethnic groups. The semantic structure of the ethnosymbol is formed on the basis of national associative relationships commonly used in a particular sociolinguistic system of agreements. The aim of the article is to establish the value dominants of German culture on the basis of the analysis of ethnic symbols as important components of the linguistic picture of the world. Symbolic meaning as an associative rethinking of the direct and figurative meanings of the word involves taking into account the social function and ethnocultural specifics of the denoted object. National verbal associations are a prerequisite for the formation of symbolic semantics of the word, but the involvement of only linguistic methods does not provide a thorough and comprehensive study. The connection between language and language consciousness can be explored through an associative experiment. The results of such an experiment make it possible not only to establish the features of verbal memory, mental lexicon, cultural stereotypes, but also to reflect the specifics of the worldview of the language community. Most German ethnic symbols objectify such concepts as order, punctuality, purity, diligence, thrift. The set of the value dominants creates a certain type of the culture that has been maintained in the language and is transferred from generation to generation.
This article discusses the conceptual and methodological issues faced during empirical research based on data collected via Application Programming Interfaces(APIs) of online platforms. Based on Platform Studies, digital methods, and other approaches anchored in Science and Technology Studies (STS), this article examines the entanglements between the politics of APIs and dimensions, such as affordances, governance, datafication, and algorithmic mediations in social media platforms (e.g., Twitter and Facebook). Material, political, normative, and economic aspects are discussed by examples ranging from the first APIs implemented in the 2000s to recent challenges, especially those following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
; This study aims to reflect on the subject's experience in the face of the covid-19 pandemic by a psychoanalytic perspective. The material analyzed discursively was constituted by testimonies of undergraduate psychology students published in a virtual space during the period of social distance. The subjectivation processes emphasized in our analysis were discussed in four thematic groups: facing the traumatic potential: being able to witness the fall of the Other; the (un)protection of the subjects by the State: the potentiation of psychological suffering; the superegoic imperative of capitalist production and the productive traces of unproductivity, and (im possibilities of mourning: changes in our attitude towards death. Finally, we seek to critically evidence the destructive and authoritarian aspect of the state management of affections on subjects and the transformative power (analytical and political) of the experiences of unproductivity, indeterminacy and helplessness.
I focus in this chapter on Revolutionary Marxist education, distinguishing it, in particular, from both Centrist, and Left versions of social democracy/revisionism. Accordingly, I set out what I consider to be five key aspects Marxists critique about education policy, and make proposals and seek to enact, relating to: (i) Curriculum and Assessment, (ii) Pedagogy, (iii) The Organisational Culture within the School/ Institution, (iv) Organisation of The Education System and of Students, that is, comprehensive schooling or selective schooling, and (v) Ownership and Control of Schools, Colleges and Universities. The conclusion sets out what is specifically Marxist about the proposals set out.
The purpose of this paper is to develop an ontological reading of the ethical and epistemic phenomenon that Miranda Fricker (2017) describes as testimonial injustice. In order to do this, we will resort to the ideas put forward by Ian Hacking (2001, 2002, 2006) concerning the relations between social classifications and social kinds. On the one hand, we will deal with the processes that Hacking terms "making up people", namely, processes in which the articulation of certain classifications make possible to existence of certain types of people. We will argue that episodes of testimonial injustice, that express the effects of stereotypical classifications, can be construed as part of the social processes of making up people because those episodes contribute to fabricate the epistemic attributes, such as credibility, of certain types or kinds of people. On the other hand, in order to conceptualize the ontological setting under which the phenomenon of testimonial injustice becomes recognizable and reproachable, we will draw on Hacking's idea of "interactive kinds". We contend that the concept of "interactive kinds" underlines the fundamentally unstable nature of human kinds and that emphasizing this dynamic aspect can illuminate the social conditions that make testimonial injustice ethically blameworthy. In this sense, we will argue that testimonial injustice can become the object of a normative point of view only insofar as the kinds whose existence is made possible by stereotypical classification are already undergoing a process of change.
Context: With the growing denunciations of violence and injustices in the social relationship, inside and outside schools, education based on human rights is insurgent in the current system of teaching and learning. Using the concept of school as a process of scientific, social and political construction, we planned the teaching and learning process of chemical interactions using the art of graffiti as a playful activity. Objectives: Reflection on chemistry teaching beyond the concepts of natural sciences, but also towards social issues to promote an education that transfigures the traditional model established by the hegemonic power during Brazilian history. Design: We use an ethnographic case study as a method. Scenario and Participants: In this way, we chose to bring graffiti art to chemistry workshops, since the paints are fixed on urban walls through chemical interactions between substances, building images and/or protest phrases that make us rethink the injustices and inequalities existing in Brazilian society and to dialogue the emergence of this art in the black movement with the political aspects of Human Rights. Thirteen students enrolled in a state basic education high school in the city of Goiânia-GO, Brazil, joined the workshops on Human Rights, Graffiti and Chemistry. Eight graffiti artists also participated in the workshop for free. Data collection and analysis: We used transcripts of semi-structured interviews and video-recorded workshops to categorise the data, analysing them with the Descending Hierarchical Classification technique and the use of dendrograms performed by the Iramuteq Software. Results: We obtained categories that evidence the chemical understanding of the content of chemical interactions and the socio-political understanding of human rights, and seven drawings on graffiti murals that show this correlation. Conclusions: The transgression of morals and the empowerment of the subordinate promote playfulness in the individual or collective social visibility of individuals, enabling better assimilation of scientific and social content.
Cordel Literature in the Northeast of Brazil has a significant notoriety because of the spontaneous theme, regional marks and political and social criticismo. Because of such peculiarities and relevance, the idea of this paper cames. This paper have the objetiv to contextualize such popular poetry, more specifically the poems of Antonio Gonçalves da Silva (Patativa do Assaré), with the political and social resistance and reexistence in Brazilian popular literature. For this, we read and studied some theorical approaches about popular culture (Cuche, 1999), poetry of Northeast of Brazil (Assaré, 1978), (Ribeiro, 1987) and the life and work of Patativa. For add such concepts and facts with politial resistance and social reexistence through the art, some reflections by authors were use to composse the discussion: Arantes (1982), Foucault (2011 and 2004) and Marcuse (1973). And in order to understant the poems of Patativa by the proposed of the article, a qualitative approach was used, through the analysis of the French discourse (Gregolin, 2008). Thus, through such reads, researchs and analyzes, it was possible to notice that art of Patativa resists and reexists socially, mainly, from theree aspects: language used, the life of Patativa and subjetcts dealt with in the poems.
