This book is the seventh volume in a series covering best practices in community quality of life indicators. The case studies and analysis in this volume demonstrate how community indicators projects today operate within a need to amplify the voice of disadvantaged communities, seriously explore the increasing use of information technology, produce positive community change and sustain these efforts over time. The work presented here spans North American and Australian community work and demonstrates how the field of community indicators has undergone a rapid evolution in only a few decades. Today as in their original formulations, community indicators projects are designed to gauge the social, economic and physical health and well-being of communities. Meg Holden (PhD, New School for Social Research) is a social scientist whose research investigates the promises and results of sustainability planning in cities around the world. She is an Associate Professor of urban studies and geography at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Meg served as a board member of the Community Indicators Consortium from 2011-2016 and she currently serves as editorial board member of the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life as well as the Springer book series on Community Quality of Life and Wellbeing. Meg is the author of Pragmatic Justifications for the Sustainable City: Acting in the common place (Routledge, 2017). Rhonda Phillips, Ph.D., FACIP, has research and outreach efforts that focus on quality of life and well-being related to community and economic development. At Purdue University, she serves as inaugural Dean of the Honors College and a professor in the Agricultural Economics Department. She is author or editor of over 20 books, including Sustainable Communities: Creating a Durable Local Economy, and Introduction to Community Development. Formerly a Senior Sustainability Scientist with the Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, Rhonda also served as director and professor in the School of Community Resources and Development at Arizona State University. She is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners, and immediate past president of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies. Chantal Stevens is a Performance Management Analyst for the King County Auditor's Office where she also holds the position of Program Oversight Manager for the Countywide Community Forums, an innovative collaboration between the public and King County to improve public engagement. She previously served on the CIC board from 2004-2007, and again in 2012. Chantal was formerly the Executive Director of Sustainable Seattle, a pioneer in the development of community indicators. She was the co- lead of the first conference dedicated to the exploration of CI-PM integration, and is currently an active advocate for community indicators and public engagement as a key element of a functioning performance management system at King County. She holds a BS and MMA from the University of Washington.

This book presents a comprehensive examination of Chinese consumer behaviour and challenges the previously dichotomous interpretation of the consumption of Western and non-Western brands in China. The dominant position is that Chinese consumers are driven by a desire to imitate the lifestyles of Westerners and thereby advance their social standing locally. The alternative is that consumers reject Western brands as a symbolic gesture of loyalty to their nation-state. Drawing from survey responses and in depth interviews with Chinese consumers in both rural and urban areas, Kelly Tian and Lily Dong find that consumers situate Western brands within select historical moments. This embellishment attaches historical meanings to Western brands in ways that render them useful in asserting preferred visions of the future China. By highlighting how Western brands are used in contests for national identity, Consumer-Citizens of China challenges the notion of the "patriot's paradox" and answers scholars questions as to whether Chinese nationalists today allow for a Sino-Western space where the Chinese can love China without hating the West. Indem die Selbstständigen ihren "Markt machen", positionieren sie sich mit dem und gegen diesen Diskurs. Der Autor zeigt aus einer wirtschaftsanthropologischen Perspektive, wie die Unternehmer*innen dabei ihre gesellschaftlichen Positionen und etablierte ökonomische Wissensbestände gleichermaßen verhandeln. Dazu folgt er dem Diskurs um "ethnische Ökonomie" von der politischen in die unternehmerische Praxis und zeigt: Geschäfte im Markt für muslimische Mode werden zum Resultat gesellschaftlicher Diskurse und der Markt zum Effekt beschreibbarer unternehmerischer Praxis - weit jenseits einer "unsichtbaren Hand".

This book presents the latest technologies and operational methods available to support sustainable freight transport practices. It highlights market requirements, cutting edge applications, and case studies from innovators in the logistics services industry. The goal is to help bridge the gap between advanced computational techniques and complex applied problems such as those in sustainable transport and logistics operations. Freight transport has traditionally focused on costs and service levels. However, it is no longer possible or socially responsible to neglect the environmental, social, climate, and energy implications of the freight moving globally. This book places sustainability at the forefront of the freight transport agenda. Sustainable Freight Transport: Theory, Models and Case Studies is divided into four sections. Section I includes chapters that focus on green freight transport policies and existing frameworks and issues. Section II is devoted to using modelling techniques and optimization for achieving sustainable freight transport, while Section III examines vehicle technologies and information systems that help achieve more sustainable transport operations both locally and globally. The final section focuses on the market requirements and presents case studies from key logistics service providers in achieving sustainable freight transport including intermodal transport applications. Ver- und Entsorgungssysteme haben bislang vorwiegend eine dienende Funktion. Die Träger der jeweiligen Fachplanung zur Strom- und Wärmeversorgung, zur Wasserver- und Abwasserentsorgung sowie zur Abfallentsorgung sollen eine Aufgabe der Daseinsvorsorge erfüllen und folgen daher, meist ohne auf diese Einfluss zu nehmen, der Siedlungsentwicklung nach. Die Alterung der Systeme, der demographische Wandel, die Finanzknappheit der Kommunen und nicht zuletzt die gesteigerten Anforderungen an den Umweltschutz bestimmen die Anforderungen an die derzeitigen Systeme und deren Strukturen. Künftig kommt es jedoch nicht nur darauf an, die vorhandenen umfangreichen Investitionen in den Untergrund zu erhalten, anzupassen oder zu erneuern. Die Gelegenheit ist günstig, die bestehenden Systeme zu überprüfen und zukunftsfähig auszurichten: bei effizientem Mitteleinsatz, hoher Verfügungs- und Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und künftig auch möglichst mit positivem Einfluss auf die Raumentwicklung.
Mit dem vorliegenden Band wird diesen Aspekten durch eine Analyse der technologischen, der regionalökonomischen sowie der verschiedenen raumstrukturellen Einflussfaktoren auf die Raumentwicklung nachgegangen. Die einzelnen Systeme haben zahlreiche Gemeinsamkeiten, sodass einige Analogieschüsse möglich sind. Dabei wird auch die Steuerungsmöglichkeit der Fachplanung durch die räumliche Planung insgesamt hinterfragt und die praktische Anwendung regionalplanerischer Instrumente im Bereich der Ver- und Entsorgungssysteme, die Rolle der baulichen Dichte sowie die Potenziale für ein künftiges Stoffstrommanagement werden aufgezeigt bzw. in ihren Ausprägungen analysiert. Die abschließend dargestellten Handlungserfordernisse lassen erkennen, dass es einer Vielzahl von koordinierten Aktivitäten der Politik und der planerischen Steuerung bedarf, um die noch lange nicht ausreichend definierten Ziele einer zukunftsfähigen Infrastruktur zu erreichen. Insbesondere wird es notwendig sein, die fachtechnischen Akteure dazu zu motivieren, auch einen Beitrag zu einer zukunftsfähigen Raumentwicklung zu leisten.

"Greenport, New York, a village on the North Fork of Long Island, has become an exemplar of a little-noted national trend--immigrants spreading beyond the big coastal cities, driving much of rural population growth nationally. In Village of Immigrants, Diana R. Gordon illustrates how small-town America has been revitalized by the arrival of these immigrants in Greenport, where she lives. Greenport today boasts a population that is one-third Hispanic. Gordon contends that these immigrants have effectively saved the town's economy by taking low-skill jobs, increasing the tax base, filling local schools, and patronizing local businesses.
