An unexpected alarm about youth and gang related violence in Cape Verde increased during the last decades. Moreover, the International community has encouraged the government of Cape Verde to fight juvenile delinquency and urban violence. The government reacted with repressive and securitization policies towards the youth, contributing to the ineffectively of social inclusion programs. Moreover, as various accounts suggest, the Cape Verdean parties and the election dynamics manipulated the local community and youth organizations. Some studies underlined how this dynamics influenced youth and child participation. A grassroots NGO born in 2010 in the capital city of Praia, led by António Mascarenhas Monteiro, promoted a primary violence prevention intervention named Simenti. Currently, a group of young leaders (with a background of ex-offenders) collectively manage the NGO. This group founded the Pilorinhu a cultural center in a low-income neighborhood, situated in an occupied building previously unutilized and the Korrenti di Ativiztaz, a social movement inspired by the pan-African legacy of Amìlcar Cabral, a national hero of anticolonial struggle. ; open
In the period extending from 1975 to 1990, Lebanon entered a very dark phase in its history, as it became the battlefield of clashing communities and factions. The end of the war invited a willing erasure of fifteen years of violence from the national consciousness of Lebanese people leaving them burdened with the heavy weight of trauma. As the government deliberately refuses to keep the memory of the War alive, the novels written in the postwar period by contemporary immigrant Anglophone Lebanese writers seek to pull the bloody events out of amnesia and offer the Lebanese people the possibility to deal with their trauma publicly by coming face to face with the violence they had to endure.
I ricercatori del progetto internazionale 'Victims and Corporations. ; Directive 2012/29/EU establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime sets down the duty to make an individual assessment of each victim's specific needs of protection from secondary and repeat victimisation, from intimidation and from retaliation; a duty which is potentially incumbent on a wide range of professionals (be they legal, social or health workers). Neither the Directive, nor the Italian transposition law, provide details about the specific individuals charged with the task and the specific ways to perform it. The researchers of the international project 'Victims and Corporations. Implementation of Directive 2012/29/EU for victims of corporate crimes and corporate violence' have developed a set of specific guidelines which may help all interested professionals in identifying the elements to be taken into account while performing said individual assessment, with specific reference to a typology of potentially vulnerable people, who, however, often fail even to be recognised as victims. They are the victims of corporate violence, i.e. people having suffered harms to life, health or personal integrity due to crimes committed by corporations in the course of their legitimate activity.
This paper explores violence against religious houses as an indicator of the limits of political negotiation and consensus building in early medieval polities. It analyses records of attacks against religious houses and clerics from León (NW Iberia) that escape traditional interpreta- tions of violence as a tool in the negotiation of social relations, and construes the events as an ex- pression of local social cleavages. In so doing, it provides a guideline for probing similar records in ways that might illuminate aspects of social relations and dynamics otherwise obscured by the dominant themes of the documentary sources from this period.
Our research on the dynamic of international agreements in preventing and treating violence against women is a specific topic and important for the spirit of legislation, policy recommendations and projects especially in the Muslim Arab countries working on the new status of Muslim women. Violence is a tragic situation for all; Governments make it a matter of concern because of the emergency alarming number of victims. The French media reports for example that one woman dies every two days due to the assault and violence caused by a spouse, parent or in the street. In Morocco, domestic, marital and social violence takes more space and is part of everyday life to such an extent that it no longer shocks anyone, it seems that the couple has integrity where the man is the core family, all the merit and the priority back mainly to him. Patriarchal power, brother, husband draws its strength from some misinterpretations of Koranic texts, a speech that does not promote the spirit of sharing and equality that the texts of the Koran, guidelines and practices of the Prophet encouraged fully. In this research, we will try to explore how we could prevent and treat violence against women, based on texts and experiences, which limit and fight against discrimination against women and against violence when they are victims. We will find a legal study, put in a frame to social, cultural, political and psychological, for they think that violence is closely related to all disciplines that will meet the needs of people and improve living conditions. Our research has been developed around practical work and field experiences. Violence against women remains a family problematic first. Around the world, women have their rights abused in the name of honor, love, jealousy, passion and tradition and religion, even within their families. Yet, none of these values allows the legitimate use of violence. Discrimination and violence against women are closely linked. Today, Morocco, Turkey, Yemen, Afghanistan and others, the little girl may be betrothed at birth; she became less easy to schooling and higher education than boys. Once adult, women are less informed about their rights, they will have fewer chances to develop its capabilities in different sectors, including politics. Without a profession and without its own financial resources, it is difficult to end a violent relationship. Violence against women is no longer considered as a taboo, women respond; they have no more difficulties to file complaints against their abusers. But the complaint is not an end in itself if the laws do not provide any text to protect women against violence, whether physical or moral. Non-Governmental Organizations call all leaders and the international community to support and to promote initiatives to ensure the prevention and the treatment of violence, to establish mechanisms of protection and that all women victims of violence receive compensation. The perpetrators of such violence must be sentenced to punishment applicable with their crime. The police and the judiciary should be trained to be able to act quickly and effectively against all forms of violence against women and grant them appropriate weight. Religious institutions are called on to give up any action that encourages or tolerates violence against women and to respect the rights thereof, and to introduce civic education programs in schools, highlighting the role of women within the family and society and promoting a change in attitudes. A cultural and economic revolution of women is necessary; independence allows freedom of choice and expression. The lack of places where they can escape, take refuge, a place to be listened and get the help needed faced to the violence constitutes an obstacle for them to denounce their aggressors and fight against this violence lived for a long time.
The authors analyzed the phenomenon of homicidal violence from a psychoanalytic viewpoint in the biographical reconstruction of an offender hospitalized in a judicial psychiatric hospital. The crime is viewed within the life history of the patient, a life history gathered during criminological-forensic interviews. This study used a hermeneutic qualitative approach to delineate the criminological dynamics within the psychobiography of the offender. For this purpose, the authors gathered information from the patient's records and from direct interviews with the penitentiary operators. The interesting scientific picture that emerged from the clinical and criminological interviews is different from an offender "history" that is frequently given by institutions, mass media and judicial bodies. In this narrative, there are visible projections of the fears and the anguish that cross contemporary society. The facts narrated by the media often do not reflect the reality that the author of a crime narrates. So-called journalistic information too often becomes only a detailed description of atrocious crimes that erup physical safety and the fear of the unknown. The simple description, even though minute, of a crime and of an offender is not, from a criminological and psychological point of view, sufficient for the understanding of the deep tensions in the offender. Nor is it enough to anticipate an intervention plan congruous with the spirit of present-day Italian penitentiary legislation or to prepare a preventive rehabilitative program in order to avoid recidivism.
; XXIV - Ciclo
The aim of this article is to review the literature on the effects of social environment on the development of physical aggression. We have chosen to consider the social environment in terms of a relatively recent unifying concept, the social capital. In recent years, this concept has increasingly come to the fore. Initially formulated by Bourdieu, Coleman and Putnam to explain such phenomena as social stratification and economic and political development, it has since been utilized to interpret various aspects of life in society. From the developmental standpoint, several empirical studies have demonstrated that both familial and extra-familial social capital have an effect, even in the long term, on the adaptation of children, on academic results and socio-economic success, and on health and well-being. In general, the social capital perspective has proved useful in helping to understand aggressive behavior and violence, though much more research is needed. Not all forms of social capital act in the same way, and several studies have found that social capital seems to exert a preventive effect on aggressive behavior only in certain circumstances and only with regard to some types of persons. The various types of social capital have a differential impact according to the age of the individual. Family social capital and the relationship resources offered by the child welfare system chiefly act during early childhood and childhood, when learning to regulate physical aggression appears to be at its peak. The influence of peers has been shown mainly during late childhood and adolescence: however, it is very likely that it is present very early at home through siblings, and in day care. Violent subcultures and organized crime are more likely to exert a direct effect on adolescents and adults. Broadly speaking, it seems that social capital at the micro level plays a stronger role during childhood, while the macro level acts especially during adolescence and adult life.
The author reflects, within the critical perspective of cultural anthropology, on the issue of the impact of pollutants on human bodies transformed into toxic bodies, ecological alterities characterized by social vulnerabilities and inequalities, but for this reason living texts able to tell stories about global environmental contamination, disease, power, exploitation, injustice and oppression. The toxic bodies reveal the inevitable intertwining between human subjects and non-human materials, requiring a significant collective responsibility, a total rethinking of the relationship between culture and nature and more appropriate ethical and political strategies of which, as the environmental historians show, women have already been active supporters from long time.
Stalking is often interpreted within the framework of violence against women or domestic violence. Contrary to research on domestic violence, the gender-specificity or the domestic violence context of stalking has received only little attention. Overwhelming empirical evidence suggests that stalking 'disproportionally affects women' in the sense that women run a higher risk of falling victim to stalking. Some studies also attribute more severe consequences to female victimization of stalking. There is furthermore evidence that a former (violent) relationship increases the risk of stalking victimization and that a prior romantic involvement has an influence on the seriousness and duration of the stalking. As a result, stalking can be considered a form of (domestic) violence against women. Although the violence against women and the domestic violence paradigms were once very useful in generating attention for the problem of stalking, and although empirical evidence suggests that these perspectives remain useful to date, the fact that stalking is a heterogeneous phenomenon, affecting male and female, intimate and non-intimate victims, should always be kept in mind. Legislation which explicitly (e.g., by reserving protection orders to victims of ex-intimate stalking) or inadvertently (e.g., by using a fear-requirement or by including gender-specific stalking tactics) excludes certain offenders or victims, as is the case in some EU Member States and the CoE Convention on Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, should be avoided.
In agreement with the title of this article, the essay is divided into two basic parts: one which is historical and the other philosophical. In the first part, the author examines at the beginning the classical Latin etyma of the term uiolentia (uis, uiolare, uiolator, etc .). After that comes the acclaration of the philosophical concept of «violence» in Aristotle and Saint Thomas, and in continuation an indication of the application of the same concept to the field of ethics, and finally to the juridical field within classical roman law. In another sphere of considerations -ethical and political- the author points out the opinions of some characters which Plato introduces in his dialogues Gorgias and The Republic, due above all to the resonance which these works hace had in the history of the Western World until the present time. The subject of bloody violence, which is inherent to the action of the tyrannicide, is treated here briefly with references to the works of Cicero, John of Salisbury, Saint Thomas, Marsilius of Padua, Coluccio Salutati, Juan de Mariana, etc. Phenomena of midieval history suchaas the Crusades and the trials of the Inquisition could not be silenced in this case because both phenomena legitimized morally the use of violence directed towards infidels and heretics. The historical excursus on the topic of the legitimacy of violence in the hands of those who govern passes in successive order, through Machiavelli, to the political literature on the a «reason of state», jusnaturalism, etc . To be underlined is the fact that since the end of the Eighteenth Century -and in an even much more important way in the realm of hegelian Idealism- the concept of violence has undergone a process of amplification as much within the field of Philosophy as within the experimental sciences: Darwin, Malthus and Hegel form the framework. This concept, which in Hegel's dialectic transformed itself into the dynamic principie of the antithesis, and which, therefore, affirmed the structure of the metaphysical ...
In Latin America, over the past decade, the term "obstetric violence" has become part of the legal framework. Specific laws against obstetric violence–gender-based violence and the violation of human rights – exist in Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay. In the European countries a political, social and medical debate on the matter is still weak. In this article, I focus on the political and formative potential of this novel concept, according to the results of the anthropological research project "Obstetric Violence". The new goal for research, policies and human rights on childbirth".
The Parliamentary Committee of Enquiry focused on femicide was set up by Senate of Italian Republic in order to investigate about the problem and to propose to Italian Parliament the way how to intervene. It's following the Istanbul Convention guidelines based on "4P": Prevention, Protection, Prosecution, Politics. Italy improved in prosecution and protection, less in the others. We need to reach a real turning point. We need a cultural battle to fight backing on the education of the future generation and investing in training and professional skills for operators who have to take action.
The present article deals with the concept of war from both a philosophical and a legal standpoint. The chief aim is to offer a clear and distinct definition of war, neutral with regard to any normative conception of the opponents. A brief discussion of the seminal definition provided by Carl von Clausewitz in his Vom Kriege (On War) – «an act of violence to compel our opponent to fulfil our will» – will make it possible to unearth the essential features of a general (that is, non state-oriented) concept of war. These features are the means and end of the violent act. Based on this and independently of any other feature or factor, a war can be defined as a voluntary act (or a set of voluntary acts) of physical violence perpetrated against individuals to impose one's will on the opponent. The implications, at both the political and the semantic level, of such an "extended" and context-independent definition of war will be examined in the final part of the article.
In this paper it is argued that lynching should be considered at the same time as the extreme of political violence and as the metaphysical foundation of social community. A historical and genealogical analysis of lynching should be integrated with a philosophical investigation to identify the essence of this peculiar political violence. In the first paragraph, the focus is on the relation between violence and law. In the second paragraph, this relation is applied to a case study, namely the lynching of black men in the Southern states. In the third part, the analysis deals with the political metaphysics of lynching through a Hobbesian approach. In the conclusions, I argue that this metaphysical framework is still working nowadays in different contexts such as social networks and media.
