Drawing on a critical overview of Jay David Bolter's volume Digital Plenitude (2019), the essay aims to provide a contribution to the theoretical debate on user experience design in the system of digital image displacement that is definable as "visual plenitude." The starting hypothesis is that today's visual plenitude – characterized by the hybridization of high and popular culture, old and new media, conservative and radical political instances – promotes self-reflective user experiences and forms of trainings to its very visual procedures. In particular, by navigating along the epistemological dichotomies identified by Bolter (catharsis/flow, originality/remix, spontaneity/procedurality, history/simulation), and by using the tools of software and visual studies, we will examine an "imaginary media" presented in the episode of the animated series Rick & Morty (Adult Swim, 2015-) titled The Vat of Acid Episode (2020), where Rick builds his nephew Morty a remote control that allows him to save and reload moments of his real life. The story of this device is considered as an example of "visual training" which guides the character and the spectators through the power relations among forms of audiovisual narration and strategies of capitalization of the imaginary, transparent uses and fantasies linked to digital display devices and invisible and material consequences linked to their global usage.

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of 'Dialogues' as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with 'others', which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, "dialogue" as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title 'translated' into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Through thematic analysis of an in-depth interview with Italian crossmedia artist Charlie G Fennel, the contribution investigates the relationship among art, gender politics and digital environments. Without any generalizing ambition, the study explores the production of meaning that emerges from the interaction between a gender non-conforming subject and the symbolic system of digital media. It inquires the ways in which social media and digital platforms provide spaces, tools and languages that are functional to the self-representation and deconstruction of (visual) gender conventions in a specific form of artistic activism.

Modernity is an essential trope of Western culture, and it is a seminal category for discussing the relation between the Americas and Europe; the writings collected in this volume discuss the relation between the Americas and modernity from a variety of perspectives. The opening essay focuses on the complex relations between modernity, modernism, and modernization especially in the context of cinema and visual media. In the following essays the issue of modernity and the Americas is explored in relation to specific contexts and examples in the visual arts, literature, the human and the social sciences. Among the topics: the relation between planning, urbanization, cinema and modernity, both in relation to North and South America. The volume then offers a reflection between theory, politics and aesthetics, considering the links between modernity and literary and filmic languages. Finally, the volume explicitly addresses the philosophic dimension, without forgetting the complexities of the geo-economic panorama produced by contemporary globalization.

Each contribution provides evidences to document some areas of the media landscape that are still critical, as they are characterized by design logics that underlie male supremacy. These areas were deeply observed by the authors to reveal the mechanisms that influence the stereotyping of female identity. The studies collected in the book pertain to different thematic areas, observed through a dual lens, that of communication design and gender studies. The reflection about the representational patterns and the power of the iconic act constitutes the underlying axis of the text. Through focused observations – stock visual content, mainstream music videos, visual ageism, pictographic languages, menstruonormativity, to mention a sampling of a few – the book gives evidence to the implications and repercussions bearing on the close concatenation that is established between visibility, representativeness, and social recognition.
; This PhD thesis offers a study regarding the 55 days of the Moro case in a comparative perspective between historical reconstruction and sociological analysis, using a specific type of source, the television one, through the examination of the news broadcast by Tg1 and Tg2 Rai (from March 16th to May 9th 1978, as well as the day 10th and the 13th May 1978) and an analysis of the media television itself, of its effects and of the consequences in terms of social reconstruction of reality that its use implies. In the collective imagination, from a television point of view, the visual memory moves between two time limits of reference: Paolo Frajese's service, broadcast in Tg1 extraordinary edition on March 16th in the morning, filming the scene of the ambush in via Fani, and Moro's body images filmed by Valerio Leccese in via Caetani, the only existing filmed evidence that Rai was forced to buy from a small private Roman broadcasting station, the Gbr. Immediately it comes to live the strong connection that links the event to the image, the relationship between the fact and its iconic representation and the great semiotic charge which the image in turn hands over the event itself, influencing the perception of it and expanding its sense and its meaning. Therefore, this work moves on two levels: the historical one, with the chronological reconstruction of the events (drawn through the interweaving of historical, institutional and judicial sources, supplemented with unpublished data that emerged from the television source) and the media level, with sociological and semiotic analysis of the communicative aspect, of narration and representation of the fact-news, through the examination of pseudo-events and media events concepts. The main objective is to be able to reconstruct the Moro case according to a different point of view, starting from the fact and proceeding through its transformation into the story, to finally arrive to dismantle and examine the structure and the media message procedures of composition built around and beyond the event.

Through the lens of visual culture studies, images can be investigated according to their "positions" on contemporary history as political instruments of human understanding. Images of borders, in particular, acquire special importance in the dialectics between visible and invisible – subjects and objects, ego and alter – and can shape a symbolic relation towards the otherness. Within the European culture and the various representations of migrants, media can contribute to rebuilding the notion of heterotopia by avoiding iconoclasm while implementing an ethical gaze and authentic comprehension about those global individuals that are reorganizing our World-Society.

Media were one of the main battlefields of the Second World War: propaganda, censorship, and counter-propaganda activities forged the imagery of war, selectively informing millions of people through a network of visual media: films, newsreels, animated short films, and comics. This article aims to highlight a specific transmedia path that involves the United States and Germany. The extremes of this trajectory are the film Triumph des Willens (1935) by director Leni Riefenstahl, and the Disney short film Der Fuehrer's Face (1943). Riefenstahl's film focuses on the Nazi Nuremberg Rally of 1934 and has been interpreted from time to time as a form of documentary testimony, propaganda product, or cinematographic art. Each of these dimensions is present in the film, which became a primary reference for the imaginary of the twentieth century. Between 1942 and 1945, the American director Frank Capra made a series of short films for war newsreels: Why We Fight is perhaps the most famous example of American counter-propaganda, and takes entire sequences of the Triumph. The transition between German and American media shows not only the migration of images but a particular appropriation which re-signifies German propaganda by turning it against itself. We also find satirical forms: in 1942 the British government distributed Lambeth Walk, a short-film that reworked Riefenstahl's work to ridicule Hitler, combining a famous popular song with the images of marches and parades. In less than a decade Triumph des Willens shows its great seductive power, and its influence its traced in famous works of American cinematography; an example is The Great Dictator (1940) by Charlie Chaplin. The linkages of transmediality expanded very soon, involving animated short-films and comics in 1942, two mass media that were an integral part of the American propaganda. Without the Riefenstahl's films, one could not comprehend a short-film like Der Fuehrer's Face, produced by the Disney studios for the American public and its allies. This Disney short-film won the Academy Award, and still maintain its effectiveness, so much so that in 2010 it was censored by a Russian court as "extremist material". The play of echoes and cross-references between media clearly shows the communicative nature of propaganda, that is, the selective and positive control of information (for emphasis). Thus, censorship is the inevitable complement, through a selective denial. Censorship seeks to limit the seductive power of images, that excess of meaning which cannot be totally enunciated or rationalized but only perceived. Satire also testifies the active power of images, rendered through a re-signification that defuses the narrations of authority. Unlike censorship, which hides, satire shows to criticize, through an illegitimate appropriation of images
