"There is solid evidence, from longitudinal studies such as the NLS and PSID, of the significant long-term impact of values and life goals on occupational attainment and earnings. So far, these findings have not been incorporated into sociological and economic theory. Preference theory does this, identifying the social and economic context in which values and attitudes can become important predictors of women's (and men's) behaviour. A theoretical and methodological distinction between causal and non-causal attitudes and values is made, illustrated by data on lifestyle preferences and patriarchal values from comparative surveys in Britain and Spain. The results show that lifestyle preferences have a major impact on women's choices between family work and employment, whereas patriarchal values are only tenuously linked to behaviour." Data from three national surveys conducted in Sweden, 1986-1996, are drawn on to explore potential class differences in attitudes toward the welfare state & whether these changed in the face of the economic crises & growing welfare state entrenchment of the 1990s. Opinions on issues of the delivery of welfare services, the financing of various welfare policies, & suspicions of welfare fraud are focal. Results indicate little support for strict class divisions in attitudes toward welfare policies; rather, there are significant differences within the middle class based on gender, occupational sector, & occupational level. Sie stellen die Ergebnisse der qualitativen Vorstudie und der quantitativen Hauptstudie aus den Jahren 2003 bis 2005 getrennt dar und erläutern zuvor die analytischen Problemstellungen und methodischen Verfahren der Untersuchung. Im Unterschied zu eher begrenzten Forschungen zur politischen Kultur wurden mikroanalytische Erweiterungen vorgenommen, indem das soziale Denken über Politik in den Mittelpunkt gestellt wurde. Die Autoren unterscheiden hierzu aus sozialpsychologischer Perspektive zwischen den kognitiven, evaluativen, affektiven und verhaltensbezogenen Dimensionen der Einstellungen gegenüber Politik. Sie diskutieren die Ergebnisse von offenen, halbstrukturierten Interviews sowie einer repräsentativen Bevölkerungsbefragung vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Entwicklungen in Geschichte und Gegenwart der beiden Länder Angola und Mosambik. Introduces this collection of essays on public attitudes toward the welfare state, particularly in light of recent restructurations, drawing on data from surveys conducted across the 1990s. Focus is on the traditional bastions of state welfare, the Scandinavian states, although the US, Australasia, & Eastern & Western Europe are also represented. Economic, political, social, & technological challenges to the traditional welfare state are reviewed, along with changes in the context of & pressures on government policy making & government responses. Sie berichten anschließend ausführlicher über die Ergebnisse aus dem "Biannual Attitude Survey of Students" (BASS), in welchem nach den Terroranschlägen des 11. September drei Gruppen von US-amerikanischen Studenten im Frühjahr 2003 befragt worden sind: College-Studenten, Kadetten des "Reserve Officer Training Corps" (ROTC) und Absolventen der Militärakademie. Draws on face-to-face survey data from 1,341 Belgian respondents to explore whether voluntary association membership leads to a sense of ethnocentrism & what mechanisms might underlie such an outcome. At issue is the relationship between participation & attitudinal elements of social capital. Discussion opens with a repudiation of the assumption of positive socialization effects -- in terms of trust -- of interactions in groups, finding that the social psychological research offers no support for social capital theory & the relevance it assigns to voluntary associations. However, it is suggested that interaction with group members can produce socialization effects, but they depend on context characteristics, with value changes seen as endogenous; ie, group members are subject to socialization effects because they are influenced by the values of other members, resulting in a process of value congruence. In this light, self-categorization theory is described & four reasons for examining ethnocentrism are proffered. It is next demonstrated that self-selection for participation in voluntary associations is occurring, with education proving to be very strongly related to participation & regression analysis suggesting that members of voluntary associations will be less ethnocentric than the rest of society. Analysis indicates that, in fact, voluntary associations are subject to a selection & adaptation dynamic. Then the link between membership & ethnocentrism is articulated via a regression model, & separate organizations are scrutinized for member & group characteristics, finding that not all kinds of organizations are equally effective in reducing ethnocentrism among their members. Thus, not all voluntary associations automatically produce democratic attitudes, contrary to social capital theory. Sowohl in Indien als auch in Deutschland ist das Grundproblem der politischen Kultur die Einbindung der Jugendlichen in den demokratischen Prozess. Es hat sich ein breiter Zynismus unter den Jugendlichen beider Länder gegenüber der jeweiligen Regierung entwickelt. Trotz einer teilweise gleichgültigen Einstellung gibt es jedoch ein bemerkenswertes Indiz dafür, daß das politische System als solches nicht abgelehnt wird. Im Gegensatz zu den Erwachsenen erheben Jugendliche Anspruch auf sozialpolitisch gleichberechtigte Behandlung und Beachtung bei der Behandlung ökonomischer Entwicklungen. Die politischen Parteien sind aufgefordert, Initiativen zu ergreifen, um öffentliche Werte und Ziele im Sinne der Jugendlichen zu aktivieren und die Notwendigkeit demokratischer Werte zu erhalten. Unkonventionelle Methoden in der politischen Aufklärungsarbeit sind gefragt, um das Interesse der Jugendlichen an der politischen Arbeit zu wecken. Mit zumehmendem Alter wird die Partizipation wachsen, so wie dann auch das Interesse an Politik wachsen wird. "Denn mit guter poltischer Bildung und der aktiven Beteiligung am Prozeß der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung wächst die Möglichkeit, daß aus politikfeindlich gestimmten Jugendlichen politisch aktive Erwachsene werden."
