; The paper deals with some aspects of the functioning of the Roman magistracies in the period following the end of the Second Punic War which became known in the historiography as the Roman Republic's "golden age". First of all the author focuses attention on the attempts undertaken in this period to normalize the system of magistracies (Villius' and Bebius' laws and some other measures). Reinforcement of the personal factor in the Roman politics of that time is also demonstrated as well as the absence of the efficient instruments of control over the actions of Roman magistrates in provinces. The author comes to a conclusion that all the attempts of the Senate to limit power of magistrates in provinces and to return magistracies into the framework of the republican constitution failed.
