On the basis of Tacitus' witness – thanks to which the 'economic style' of the High Empire can be reconstructed in broad terms – could be pointed out that, in the years 16 to 22 A.D., some basic features of the Roman society get established, including a financial policy designed to overcome structural financial problems in the agrarian economy, the intensification of the trade with the Orient (further cause of spreading of luxus), a res publica rotated around princeps and senatorial nobilitas, the increase in the average of slavish population. This paper aims to contribute to the discussion on the 'dominant rationality' that might have characterized the ruling roman classes, and on the role played by the Prince in this complex dynamic, whose intervention was requested by those powers that liked to show themselves true to the mos maiorum.

Throughout the ancient age the slavish 'class' was, by definition, the most exposed to a quotidian violence in a variety of institutionally coded forms (it is the case of the very harsh treatment reserved to fugitivi in all periods of Roman history) and consequently accepted by all categories which are integral part of a society already strongly unequal. This contribution aims to investigate the measure in which the legislative provisions that could be attributed to Emperors of the first dynasty and interpreted from the sources as acts displaying a kind of humanitas towards the slavish population had effectively contributed, if not to modify the ideology of violence on slaves, a least to seek of mitigate it, taking due account of the difference between domestic urban and rural slavery in terms of coercive instruments – physical as well as psychological – used by the masters on the slavish component of the above social communities.
