"A multi-generational story of growing up black and female in the rural South. This book captures the artistry, strength, hope, sound, language, and creativity shared by first-hand accounts of black women in a familial village community in North Carolina. Sweetwater is about the black female experience as it relates to friendship, family, spirituality, poverty, education, addiction, mental illness, romantic relationships, raising children, and everyday survival. The author uses a metaphor of home to discuss and situate a way of being in and seeing/experiencing the world through a raced and gendered lens. She uses what she calls blackgirl autoethnography to talk about embodied, critical, and culturally situated research that begins (and/or) ends at home, in the bodies we live with, and the social circumstances we live through. Using sensory data and preliminary interviews with women she has shared "home" spaces with, she incorporates intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1991), cultural representation (Hall, 2003), endarkened epistemology (Dillard, 2000), and critical autoethnography (Adams, Holman Jones, & Ellis, 2015; Boylorn & Orbe, 2014; Madison, 2012) to argue for blackgirl autoethnography as a praxis for black and brown women to do the home/work of self-construction, absent the influences of racist, classist, and misogynistic culture.

In this reflexive auto/ethnography, the author challenges the lessons she learned about difference growing up in a small community. Seeing Johnson's quare theory as an opportunity to reimagine problematic conditioning, she reflects on moments of clarity related to sexuality, race, class, and gender difference and theorizes the possibilities of quare auto/ethnography as an opportunity to critique and engage difference. She uses auto/ethnography to introduce the possibilities of bridging (backward) in an effort to make sense and make meaning from difficult, painful, and complicated experiences.

In recent years academic scholarship and the public imagination has focused on the love lives (or lack thereof) of black women. In response and reaction to the recent so-called black love epidemic I interrogate claims about black women's failure at love and critique the ways that black women are often blamed for their cultural positionality. Framing my personal story with Toni Morrison's fictional character Pecola Breedlove, I discuss the role of sexism and colorism in the context of heterosexual love narratives. I use autoethnography, references to popular culture, and interdisciplinary scholarship to discuss my personal journey of identity, identification, and transformation as an unmarried dark-skinned woman.

Reflexivity interrogates the cause and effect of self-awareness and self-reference in qualitative work. This article uses reflexivity to resolve the meaning and implications that race has on ethnographic research. The author argues that race automatically and inevitably influences research, therefore conscious race reflexivity is a useful tool for auto/ ethnographic work. Even when race is not named out loud, it is germane to how an ethnographic project will be conceptualized, interpreted, and completed. By using examples from ethnographic studies that concentrate on race and excerpts from personal experiences, the author names the reflexive stories "race stories" and identifies the analytic reflections that follow, "gray spaces," to reference and demonstrate the subjective and synergistic role of race in reflexive research.

One approach to talking about race and racism in the classroom is to promote dialogic communication through open-ended dialogue and autoethnographic storytelling. In an effort to understand and consider how the lived experiences of race and racism are communicated and reflected on outside of the classroom, the author initiated a focus group with Black students from a race class to reflect about their experiences in the classroom. By following a pedagogical strategy of engaging students once classes are over, this article seeks to initiate and continue conversations about race and racism inside and outside of college classrooms.

For the Crunk Feminist Collective, their academic jobs were lacking in conversations about how race and gender politics intersected with pop culture and current events. So they started a blog to create dialogue as critical women stuck between loving hip hop culture while hating patriarchy and sexism.

The Fire This Time (TFTT), a Black writers' collaboration which uses multiple genres of writing as our method is grounded in what Don Cornelius used to call Love, Peace, and Soul. Love, because our love for writing and the complexities and challenges of the Black experience, coupled with a passion for connecting with other Black scholars in ways that have the potential for making a difference in the world, is at the heart of this work. Peace, because through collaborative engagement with our experiences, we are reaching a deeper spiritual understanding of ourselves leading to a greater sense of inner peace, as well as how sharing our critical reflections, poems, and stories will help others make meaning out of the importance of peace in their own lives. Soul, because our souls bear witness to what it means to Black, and alive in a racist, sexist, homophobic society, from lenses informed by our race as well as our different genders, ages, and sexual orientations. This article will share the origin of TFTT, and excerpts we will construct from the larger body of work to give the reader a sense of what happens when Black scholars write to and with each other on a monthly basis.
