"In most Western developed countries, adult life is increasingly organized on the basis of short-term work contracts and reduced social security funds. In this context it seems that producing efficient job-seekers and employees becomes the main aim of educational programs for the next generation. Through case studies of Turkish and Arabic students in Berlin (Germany), Asian, Hispanic and Black students in Long Beach (USA), and children of landless rural workers in Espirito Santo (Brazil), this book investigates emerging educational practices and takes a critical stance towards what can be seen as "mainstream" or "dominant" educational politics. Kontopodis poses the question of whether encouraging students to engage in guided reflection about themselves, their past performance and their future career supports marginalized youth in dealing with complex everyday situations and actively participating in societal improvement. His interdisciplinary theoretical account draws on process philosophy and time theory, developmental and educational psychological theorising (mainly Vygotskian/post-Vygotskian), sociology of education, as well as on continuing discussions in the fields of science and technology studies and anthropology. Abstract
The Western school classroom can no longer remain a secluded and impermeable space in a world that is increasingly hyperconnected through dynamic flows of capital, technologies, populations, media images and ideas. Books brought to the school by diverse students, narratives from far-away countries and YouTube tunes from different cultures can become powerful teaching and learning tools in this frame. Such tools enable multiple metaphors and connections between various life spheres, diverse cultural and socio-economic milieus, and different times and places, as manifested in the thought-provoking ethnographic observation on 'The book and the author's reading' by Elise v. Bernstorff and Carla J. Maier.

Zum Abschluss seiner fundierten Auseinandersetzung mit den theoretischen, epistemologischen und methodologischen Aspekten unseres Buches "Das Selbst als Netzwerk" (KONTOPODIS & NIEWÖHNER 2010) wirft Niklas Alexander CHIMIRRI (2012) eine Frage auf, deren Beantwortung wir innerhalb unserer kleinen deutschsprachigen Einführung ins relational-materielle Denken nicht im Detail leisten konnten: "Does the relational-materialist perspective […] strive for emancipatory transformation, or plainly said, for improving the everyday life of people?" Um auf diese Frage zu antworten und die von Niklas Alexander CHIMIRRI angeregte Diskussion weiterzuführen, werden hier 1. die verschiedenen Konnotationen des Begriffes des Politischen in den Science & Technology Studies unterschieden und eingeordnet, 2. die zentralen Tendenzen der Expertisedebatte und der Biokapitalismuskritik wie auch die zentralen Merkmale von ontological politics identifiziert und 3. die Zusammenhänge zwischen Ethik und Politik im Rahmen von Science & Technology Studies diskutiert. The paper presented here is an attempt at casting human development as a semiotic-material phenomenon which reflects power relations and includes uncertainty. On the ground of post-structuralist approaches, development is considered here as a performative concept, which does not represent but creates realities. Emphasis is put on the notions of 'mediation', 'translation' and 'materiality' in everyday practices of students and teachers in a concrete school setting, where I conducted ethnographical research for one school year. The analysis of discursive research material of teachers' discussions and interviews with students proves the developmental discourse to be interrelated to teachers' and students' positioning in the school; the developmental discourse orders ongoing interaction and enables students and teachers to perform the past and witness the future in a way which corresponds with dominant values and state social/educational policies. By translating a variety of events into a line moving from the past to the future as well as by materializing this line as diagrams and other semiotic-material objects, development becomes a technology of the self of (late) modernity which implies power relations and supports the maintenance of the modern order. On these grounds, a relational approach to development is suggested, which raises methodological and political issues.

Dieser Aufsatz beginnt mit einer Bezugnahme auf moderne Zeittheorien und stellt im Weiteren alternative Sichtweisen in den Werken von FOUCAULT, DELEUZE, LATOUR und anderen vor. Die Studie konzentriert sich auf den konkreten Kontext einer Versuchsschule, die sich um die Integration ausgegrenzter Schüler und Schülerinnen in die Gesellschaft bemüht. Auf Grundlage einer Synthese aus Diskursanalyse und Actor-Network-Theorie werden zwei Fragen aufgeworfen: 1. ob und inwiefern die "Verfertigung von Zeiten" mit den Mikroformationen von Diskursen zusammenhängt, und 2. wie die Mikroformationen von Diskursen im konkreten Setting einer Schule hinsichtlich ihrer temporalen und anderen Aspekte als Prozesse entstehen. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, verknüpfe ich kritische ethnographische Forschung mit einer Methodologie der Actor-Network-Theorie – ein Ansatz, den man als "rhizomatische Analyse" bezeichnen könnte (DELEUZE & GUTTARI 1980). Bei der Untersuchung diskursiven und nichtdiskursiven Handelns unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Materialitäten (Orte, Schülerdokumentationen, Berichte, Lebensläufe und Akten) führe ich das Konzept "zeitlicher Kontrollmittel" ein und stelle zwei von ihnen näher vor: Synchronität und Konvergenz. Auf diese Weise schlage ich eine neue Sicht auf Zeit vor und setze sie zur Diskursformation in Beziehung. So wiederum wird ein neues Potenzial für die kritische Reflexion über Theorien von Zeit sowie aller Handlungen in der Schule erschlossen.

The special issue Doing Memory, Doing Identity: Politics of the Everyday in Contemporary Global Communities draws on anthropological theory, performance studies, feminism, post-colonial studies and other theoretical traditions for an insightful examination of the everyday practices of doing memory. A series of ethnographies and qualitative studies from locations as diverse as Italy, Norway, Greece, France, Brazil and China complement profound theoretical analyses to investigate the multiple links between individual and collective pasts, futures and identities, especially focusing on emotions, embodiment, the senses, difference and power relations. Taking a critical stance in regard to current social-scientific and socio-political debates, this special issue reflects on the political and ethical aspects of day-to-day memory practices and examines issues related to identity, imagination and otherness.

This article explores how socio-cultural, cultural-historical and activity theory approaches to education and psychology have traveled to Greece over the last three decades. It explores the history of introducing these approaches in the Greek context while identifying key dimensions of the process, such as: diverse interpretation of original works, key actors in academic teaching and research and linkages with educational policy and activism beyond the university spaces. Greece with its specific history of military dictatorship, constitutional change, varied struggles for democracy within the university, European integration, and current crisis and neoliberal reforms is seen as a sample case; taking this case as a point of departure, the authors develop a meta-theoretical frame on how to discuss the various ways in which socio-cultural-historical approaches have traveled across socio-cultural, historical, institutional, political, regional, and also, increasingly globalized contexts of education. ; Статья посвящена анализу того, как идеи социокультурного, культурно-исторического и деятельностного подходов в образовании и психологии распространялись в Греции на протяжении последних 30 лет. Прослеживается история прихода этих идей в Грецию, их преломление в греческом контексте и ключевые факторы этого процесса, как то: широкая интерпретация источников, значимые фигуры в академической среде и науке, взаимосвязь с образовательной политикой и активизмом вне стен университетов. Специфика греческой истории с ее военной диктатурой, конституционными изменениями, борьбой за демократию, европейской интеграцией, новейшим кризисом и неолиберальными реформами — все это становится для авторов отправной точкой для выстраивания метатеоретической концепции, описывающей разнообразные способы, которыми социо-культурно-исторические подходы проникали в социокультурный, исторический, институциональный, политический, региональный и интенсивно глобализирующийся образовательный контексты.

This special issue of Science, Technology, & Human Values critically explores a new stage in which the life sciences and biomedical practices have entered. This new stage is marked by postgenomic developments and an increased interest of life sciences in the everyday lives of people outside laboratories and clinical settings. Furthermore, particular attention is given to many chronic and degenerative disorders such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, or developmental disorders. These developments coincide—or have become entangled—with a new set of interests that an anthropologically inclined science and technology studies (STS) is bringing to the analyses of biomedical practices. An increased interest is observed in the anthropologically inclined STS in studying phenomena on different scales and in exploring fields that are not readily dominated by technoscientific rationality in practice. The introduction to the special issue examines briefly these developments and situates them in a broader genealogy of different movements that have taken place in the anthropologically inclined subfield of STS since the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Cardiovascular diseases present the leading cause of death worldwide. Over the last decade, their preventio has become not only a central medical and public health issue but also a matter of political concern as well as a major market for pharma, nutrition, and exercise. A preventive assemblage has formed that integrates diverse kinds of knowledges, technologies, and actors, from molecular biology to social work, to foster a specific healthy lifestyle. In this article, the authors analyze this preventive assemblage as a heterogeneous engineer, that is, as an attempt to order complex everyday life into an architecture of modernism. This article draws on research conducted as part of the interdisciplinary research cluster ''preventive self'' (2006-2009) bringing together analyses from social anthropology, history, linguistics, sociology of knowledge, and medicine. The authors report here primarily from ethnographic investigations into biomedical research, primary care, and educational practices in kindergartens. The authors conclude that the preventive assemblage largely fails to install any kind of singular order. Instead, it is translated into existing orderings producing heterogeneity of a different nuance.
