Au Népal, une divinité discrète, mais omniprésente, le dieu du sol et de la terre, Bhume, cache derrière une apparente uniformité terminologique une multiplicité de pratiques rituelles étroitement liées à l'autorité des chefs locaux. Son culte renvoie à la question de la modification des pouvoirs, due à la centralisation politique et surtout foncière engendrée par l'instauration du modèle royal hindou. Cette centralisation a transformé le statut des chefs locaux et a vidé la figure de Bhume de sa substance sauvage. Car si celui-ci est toujours particulièrement vénéré dans les communautés tribales, il y apparaît plus comme un dieu du cadastrage administratif que comme un dieu du pouvoir.

Cet article décrit les techniques de piégeage au filet utilisées par les Tharu. paysans qui vivent dans la forêt paludéenne du Terai. La chasse, comme la pêche, se pratique sans effusion de sang. Lorsqu'ils s'adressent aux esprits de la malemort. responsables de la plupart des maladies, les prêtres utilisent des techniques rituelles différentes selon la "catégorie du paysage" à laquelle les esprits sont associés, site habité ou forêt. "Dans la forêt", le prêtre, installé sur ses marges, comme le chasseur qui jamais ne s'y aventure en profondeur, tente d'attirer les esprits pour les piéger. Sur le site habité, il les "cloue" en les enterrant dans le sous-sol. Aux esprits de la forêt, le prêtre offre des sacrifices spécifiques, des "sacrifices de souffle", qui ne font pas couler le sang. Cet article se veut une première approche de la notion de "mise en ordre du paysage" dans l'efficacité symbolique des rites tharu. Il s'attache à montrer que la mise en ordre rituelle du monde s'appuie sur une séparation entre le village et la forêt et sur un rapport au monde forestier marqué par une attitude de repli et de non-violence caractéristique d'une société paysanne.

The book is the first volume of the Documenta Nepalica – Book Series, published by theHeidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the National Archives, Nepal.
