I study the economic value of obesity—a status symbol in poor countries associated with raised health risks. Randomizing decision-makers in Kampala, Uganda to view weight-manipulated portraits, I find that obesity is perceived as a reliable signal of wealth but not of beauty or health. Thus, leveraging a real-stakes experiment involving professional loan officers, I show that being obese facilitates access to credit. The large obesity premium, comparable to raising borrower self-reported earnings by over 60 percent, is driven by asymmetric information and drops significantly when providing more financial information. Notably, obesity benefits and wealth-signaling value are commonly overestimated, suggesting market distortions. (JEL D82, G21, G51, I12, O16, Z13)

Parmi les productions théâtrales déployant une écriture scénique des sciences sociales, certaines privilégient l'exposition du processus de recherche, en particulier au travers de la restitution de l'enquête de terrain. En s'appuyant sur la démarche de la compagnie Si et seulement Si, tout en la resituant dans un paysage plus large de spectacles issus de la collaboration entre artistes et chercheurs en sciences sociales autour de l'enquête, l'article décrit les traits spécifiques de cette écriture dramaturgique du social et la façon dont elle peut constituer un mode alternatif de présentation de la recherche. Cette démarche modifie tant le rapport du public aux travaux d'histoire et de sciences sociales que le rapport du chercheur qui y participe à son travail, propre à interroger et stimuler l'écriture scientifique.

À partir d'archives personnelles d'anciennes ouvrières de la bonneterie auboise, et d'entretiens répétés, l'article vise à éclairer les calculs économiques quotidiens effectués tant sur le lieu de travail, lieu de recettes liés à la production industrielle et à des transactions informelles, qu'en dehors du travail, à travers des activités rémunératrices en argent ou en nature et à travers un contrôle précis des dépenses. La gestion du budget est omniprésente et se manifeste par une comptabilité qui peut être écrite sur des livres de compte ou effectuée à travers des actes témoignant de la capacité à maîtriser et organiser recettes et dépenses. La lecture des documents individuels de comptes à la lueur des descriptions des actions et des évaluations quotidiennes des agents permet de restituer les logiques économiques singulières qui orientent les vies ouvrières, et de souligner le rôle central des femmes dans le déploiement de ces logiques.

Earn little, live well. The family life and professional career of a hosiery worker during the second half of the 20th century.
Using a survey conducted with a former worker in a textile company based in a rural area, this article discusses the combination of a professional and wage-based story characterized by holding a poorly-paid position with few qualifications, and the impression of a successful and accomplished life. This combination of ethnography and history reveals how life choices become intelligible once the overview of possibilities has been highlighted and provides an account of the life of a worker, a woman and a parishioner.

In this paper we analyze the relation-ship between war and politics in the Rio de la Plata from the case of the 'Ejército Auxiliar del Perú' during the first campaign (1810-1811). In order to fill our objective, we will track, through the officers of the army, the main conflicts and how certain political princi-ples defined the reasons for the struggle. ; En el presente trabajo se analizará la relación entre guerra y política en el Río de la Plata a partir del caso del Ejército Auxiliar del Perú durante la primera campaña (1810-1811). Fifty years after the creation of the European Common Market and fifteen years after the introduction of a chapter concerning public health in the CE Treaty, we can question about the consequences of the European law's influence on public health. To answer this question we must beforehand explain how public health was ruled by European law. In spite of uncertain legal basis, the European Community has become involved in public health questions and introduced material European law in a matter distant fiom the original concems of the European Community thus contributing to public health improvement, some States having yet no legislation regarding this matter. In spite of public health protection rema.ining, in principle, in the field of competence of the States members, the national objective of public health is at the same time infiuenced by communautarisation.
