This article describes a method of teaching orientation to the visually impaired student who has a knowledge of the basic concepts related to body awareness but has not learned to travel independently. (A review of the literature shows that past research has focused on teaching concept development to young children and use of maps to experienced travelers.) Orientation skills are presented in the form of instructional objectives. The theoretical bases for the objectives are discussed, as is their use with five students ranging in age from 11 to 15.
