Many observers consider the Nordic countries as representatives of affluent and well functioning welfare states. One special feature of the Nordic models has been a certain kind f class compromise between the main social forces, or 'democratic class conflict. During his decade economic crisis has hit all the Nordic countries. As a consequence of the crisis lass character of the societies has been become more visible. From the Nordic perspective lasses are not dead, and there is a need for sociological class analysis. An other important mature of social change during the 1990s has been the growth of economically non-active population. Not only unemployment, but also all major groups out of work (students, housewives, pensioners) has increased. This process has set new challenges for class analysis too. In this paper we ask how two main types of competing class theories, those of Wright and Goldthorpe, work in the Baltic and Nordic setting. The Baltic countries studied are Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the Nordic countries are Finland, Sweden and Norway. The data used is comparative survey data from the middle of 1990s.

"This comparative study aims to develop a deeper understanding of collectivism, trade unionism, and the capacity to create collective action using Finland and Cambodia as examples of individualistic and collectivistic societies, respectively.
The study has two goals: 1) To explore the relationship between collective action, and the level and forms of collectivism in Cambodia and in Finland. 2) To explain if and how the level of collectivism affects the degree of cooperation inside the living system. Phenomena such as political participation, family values, levels of trust within the society, and perceived collective efficacy are examined. The study is based on extensive survey data collected in Cambodia and Finland.
The theoretical framework is sociological, involving the study of social systems within which observed regularities emerge and evolve through collaborative and collective behaviour. This approach also entails the personality systems of individual actors and the cultural system built into their actions. The main analytical tool used in the study is the Cultural Agency Theory (CAT).
Significant differences were found in how individuals behave at the societal level. Collective action and political participation occur at a higher level in Finland compared to Cambodia. The results also show that the question of individualism versus collectivism is more complex than is generally believed."

Tämän vertailevan tutkimuksen tavoitteena on luoda syvempää ymmärrystä kollektivismista, ammattiyhdistystoiminnasta ja kyvystä luoda kollektiivista toimintaa käyttäen Suomea ja Kambodzhaa esimerkkeinä individualistisesta ja kollektivistisesta yhteiskunnasta. Tutkimuksella on kaksi tavoitetta: 1) Tuottaa uutta tietoa ammattiyhdistysten, kollektiivisen toiminnan ja kollektivismin eri muotojen välisistä suhteista Kambodzhassa ja Suomessa. 2) Selittää, millä tavoin kollektivismin taso vaikuttaa ihmisten väliseen yhteistyöhön. Teoksessa tarkastellaan muun muassa poliittista osallistumista, perhearvoja, luottamusta yhteiskunnassa ja koettua kollektiivista tehokkuutta. Tutkimus perustuu Kambodzhasta ja Suomesta kerättyihin laajoihin kyselyaineistoihin. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys on sosiologinen. Painettu teos on tilattavissa verkkokaupoista (mm. PurposeThis paper focuses on the relationship between leadership and work engagement (WE) in Finnish and Russian private sector organizations. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how Finland and Russia differ in the level of WE; in the level of satisfaction with leadership and in specific components of leadership as most important antecedents for WE.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical analysis of this study is based on survey data collected in Finland and Russia. The analysis focuses on 1,570 Finnish and 490 Russian private sector, full-time employees with permanent contracts, who have no managerial responsibilities. The data are analyzed using descriptive methods and binary logistic regression analysis.FindingsThe results show, first, that both satisfaction of leadership and WE are higher in Finland than in Russia. Second, WE in Finland is facilitated by nearly all components of leadership – both materialistic- and relationship-based – while in Russia WE is predicted by rewarding good performers and such relationship-based practices as feedback, delegating responsibility, discussing work matters, and building trust. Contrary to the hypothesis, such materialistic-based components as providing equal treatment turned out to be insignificant for WE in Russia.Practical implicationsOrganizations should invest in leadership quality to enhance WE and thus, to get a competitive advantage.Originality/valueThis study adds to the limited comparative research on WE and its predictors.
This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers.
According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims.
This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.
