; Midwives played a role as transmitters of technical knowledge on births that has been ignored by obstetrical and professional historiography. Using archives, legislative sources, the professional press and books on childbirth (among them the first written by a woman in Spain) the changes in the academic training of midwives throughout the 19th century are studied, along with the teaching initiatives of various of them from 1870 onwards. The testimonies of midwives who wrote in order to train others are recovered and their ideas on the woman, the profession and obstetrical science are analysed, together with the alliances they established with medical professionals in order to carry out their objectives.

; Through a bibliographical survey of more than 130 works published mainly en Spanish and in English by European and North American researchers, this paper analyses the relationship between feminism and natural and biomedical sciences, reviewing the concepts developed by the feminist critique, the newly developed epistemologies and the most fruitful research approaches within the natural sciences. The article also offers a critique of the methodological, educational, and political impact of these contributions in Spain.

Social studies focusing on women's health, women's history and/or medicine for women are not always elaborated using gender as a category of analysis. In the last twenty years in Spain, many scholars have made important contributions on contraception focusing on demographic, political or ethical aspects, but few of them have discussed their results from a gender perspective. These studies usually do not include woman's medical, scientific, social and religious definitions; the role of women as doctors, health administrators, scientific researchers, and/or health activists; the contribution of women's and social movements to the improvement of women's life conditions; the relations between sanitary and women's movements, the construction of collective gender identities, the experience of real women in accessing and using oral contraceptives and so on. In Spain, during the last years of the Franco dictatorship and the democratic transition (1970-1982) there was a widespread movement towards the legalisation of contraception, prohibited since 1941. In this paper we want to look at the discourses surrounding the legalization of the pill as represented in the press, and at the role played by the feminist movement and the medical professionals in this debate. For this purpose we analyse, on the one hand, the information on the hormonal contraceptives that was published in the Spanish general press, feminine magazines and different kinds of feminists' publications during the 1970s, as well as in the main gynaecology handbooks used in Spanish faculties of medicine during this period. On the other hand, we will use oral interviews with health professionals and feminist activists.

; This paper explores the reception and assimilation of knowledge on oral contraception by gynaecologists in Spain, starting with an analysis of a wide spectrum of medical publications, especially journals. We observe that the management of synthetic hormones in Spain followed a similar pattern to that in other European countries. Thus, the option of inhibiting ovulation as a therapeutic measure was known and used during the 20 years that followed the Spanish civil war. However its contraceptive use had to overcome the restriction of a dictatorial regime, its pro-natalist ideology and the predominance of the catholic church. After a decade of doubts, the church had included the pill in their general condemnation of sterilisation and abortion. Nevertheless, professional pressure, religious admonition and directly suppressive action failed to prevent development of the first contraceptive medical services from 1969 onwards.

The book that is now being presented is a result from work developed in the scope of a project within the Alfa Programme (Exchange Programme between Universities of the European Union and Latin America), integrated into EuropeAid – Cooperation Office Latin America Directorate, and financed by the European Commission, between 2005 and 2007. Entitled Graph – Graduate Programme in the Social Dynamics of Health, the members of the project were the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Patrice Bourdelais), the Colegio de México (Guillermo Palacios), the universities of Évora (Laurinda Abreu), Granada (Teresa Ortiz-Gómes), Nacional de Luján (José Luis Moreno), La Habana (Mariana Ravanet Ramírez), Linköping (Jan Sundin), Mannheim (Martin Dinges), Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Marcos Cueto), the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de S. Paulo (Denise Bernuzzi de Sant'Anna) and the Asociación Médica Argentina (Vicente Enrique Mazzafero Martín). Designed as a textbook especially destined for post-graduate students, the main purpose of this book is to make access easier to a diversified set of documents considered of great significance to illustrate relevant content in terms of health and welfare dynamics. The book is organized into three parts (Health and Welfare; Perspectives on Gender and Health; Migration, Urbanization and Health), that start with a general introduction to the subject, followed by a small presentation, and in some cases, problematization, of the documents. Each chapter ends with a bibliographic list of the most recent and/or most important titles, according to the chapter authors' perspective, for the subject in analysis. Issues in Europe and Latin America are the focus of the book. The linguistic diversity of the project partners was assumed as an added-value that we wanted to preserve, not only taking into account the book's potential public-target – students, researchers and professors of diverse countries, with expertise in several languages – but also as a way to escape from the imposition of a singlely language for science, without obviously denying the importance of the English as an international language. ; Comision Europea
