We present a method for recovering the intrinsic (extinction-corrected) luminosity of the 11.2 μm PAH band in galaxy spectra. Using 105 high S/N Spitzer/IRS spectra of star-forming galaxies, we show that the equivalent width ratio of the 12.7 and 11.2 μm PAH bands is independent on the optical depth (t), with small dispersion (5 per cent) indicative of a nearly constant intrinsic flux ratio Rint = (f12.7/f11.2)int = 0.377 ± 0.020. Conversely, the observed flux ratio, Robs = (f12.7/f11.2)obs, strongly correlates with the silicate strength (Ssil) confirming that differences in Robs reflect variation in t . The relation between Robs and Ssil reproduces predictions for the Galactic Centre extinction law but disagrees with other laws.We calibrate the total extinction affecting the 11.2 μmPAHfrom Robs,which we apply to another sample of 215 galaxies with accuratemeasurements of the total infrared luminosity (LIR) to investigate the impact of extinction on L11.2/LIR. Correlation between L11.2/LIR and Robs independently on LIR suggests that increased extinction explains the well-known decrease in the average L11.2/LIR at high LIR. The extinction-corrected L11.2 is proportional to LIR in the range LIR = 109-1013 L⊙. In this work, we report on high-pressure Raman scattering measurements in mercury digallium sulfide (HgGa2S4) with defect chalcopyrite structure that have been complemented with lattice dynamics ab initio calculations. Our measurements evidence that this semiconductor exhibits a pressure-induced phase transition from the completely ordered defect chalcopyrite structure to a partially disordered defect stannite structure above 18 GPa which is prior to the transition to the completely disordered rocksalt phase above 23 GPa. Furthermore, a completely disordered zincblende phase is observed below 5 GPa after decreasing pressure from 25 GPa. The disordered zincblende phase undergoes a reversible pressure-induced phase transition to the disordered rocksalt phase above 18 GPa. The sequence of phase transitions here reported for HgGa2S4 evidence the existence of an intermediate phase with partial cation-vacancy disorder between the ordered defect chalcopyrite and the disordered rocksalt phases and the irreversibility of the pressure-induced order-disorder processes occurring in ordered-vacancy compounds. High-pressure Raman scattering measurements have been carried out in ZnGa2Se4 for both tetragonal defect chalcopyrite and defect stannite structures. Experimental results have been compared with theoretical lattice dynamics ab initio calculations and confirm that both phases exhibit different Raman-active phonons with slightly different pressure dependence. A pressure-induced phase transition to a Raman-inactive phase occurs for both phases; however, the sample with defect chalcopyrite structure requires slightly higher pressures than the sample with defect stannite structure to fully transform into the Raman-inactive phase. On downstroke, the Raman-inactive phase transforms into a phase that could be attributed to a disordered zincblende structure for both original phases; however, the sample with original defect chalcopyrite structure compressed just above 20¿GPa, where the transformation to the Raman-inactive phase is not completed, returns on downstroke mainly to its original structure but shows a new peak that does not correspond to the defect chalcopyrite phase. The structural and vibrational properties of bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) have been studied by means of x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements up to 20 and 30 GPa, respectively. The measurements have been complemented with ab initio total-energy and lattice dynamics calculations. Our experimental results evidence a phase transition from the low-pressure rhombohedral (R-3m) phase (B-Bi2Se3) with sixfold coordination for Bi to a monoclinic C2/m structure (B-Bi2Se3) with sevenfold coordination for Bi above 10 GPa. The equation of state and the pressure dependence of the lattice parameters and volume of a and B phases of Bi2Se3 are reported. Furthermore, the presence of a pressure-induced electronic topological phase transition in B-Bi2Se3 is discussed. Raman measurements evidence that Bi2Se3 undergoes two additional phase transitions around 20 and 28 GPa, likely toward a monoclinic C2/c and a disordered body-centered cubic structure with 8-fold and 9- or 10-fold coordination, respectively. These two high-pressure structures are the same as those recently found at high pressures in Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3. On pressure release, Bi2Se3 reverts to the original rhombohedral phase after considerable hysteresis. High-pressure optical absorption measurements have been performed in defect chalcopyrite HgGa2Se4 to investigate the influence of pressure on the bandgap energy and its relation with the pressure-induced order-disorder processes that occur in this ordered-vacancy compound. Two different experiments have been carried out in which the sample undergoes either a partial or a total pressure-induced disorder process at 15.4 and 30.8GPa, respectively. It has been found that the direct bandgap energies of the recovered samples at 1GPa were around 0.15 and 0.23eV smaller than that of the original sample, respectively, and that both recovered samples have different pressure coefficients of the direct bandgap than the original sample. In this work, we focus on the study of the structural and elastic properties of mercury digallium sulfide (HgGa2S4) at high pressures. This compound belongs to the family of AB(2)X(4) ordered-vacancy compounds and exhibits a tetragonal defect chalcopyrite structure. X-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature have been performed under compression up to 15.1 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. Our measurements have been complemented and compared with ab initio total energy calculations. The axial compressibility and the equation of state of the low-pressure phase of HgGa2S4 have been experimentally and theoretically determined and compared to other related ordered-vacancy compounds. The pressure dependence of the theoretical cation-anion and vacancy-anion distances and compressibilities in HgGa2S4 are reported and discussed in comparison to other related ordered-vacancy compounds. Finally, the pressure dependence of the theoretical elastic constants and elastic moduli of HgGa2S4 has been studied. Our calculations indicate that the low-pressure phase of HgGa2S4 becomes mechanically unstable above 13.8 GPa. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V.
