Sue Robinson explores how journalists of different identities, especially racial, enact trusting relationships with their audiences. Drawing from case studies, community-work, interviews, and focus groups, she documents an emergent ecosystem around trust building and engagement journalism that represents the first major paradigm shift of the press's core values in more than a century. Developing a new theory of trust building, Robinson calls for journalists to grapple actively with their own identities - especially the privileges, biases, and marginalization attached to them - and those of their communities, resulting in a more intentional and effective moral voice focused on justice and equity through the news practice of an ethic of care.

Applying racial formation theory, this research argues that when the political progressive ideology becomes the status quo, it loses its focus on "reform" and "progress" toward equity. Critical discourse analysis of media texts reveals how the ideology evolved into a "racial project" perpetuating institutional racism. When a moment of racial reckoning is presented to challenge the hegemonic politics in this case study, politicians, journalists, and engaged citizens employ discursive strategies to uncover privileges, call out (dis)trusting relationships, and reclaim the dominant narrative around what reform and progress look like. This work demonstrates how political communication unfolds when a progressively maintained infrastructure is revealed to be a system of oppression and where digital platforms allow for a substantial challenge.

This research used interviews with producers and sources in news about racial disparities to understand obstacles in covering issues involving race. These data along with a Deweyan framework informed the creation of a service-learning class called "Journalism for Racial Justice: Amplifying Voices in Local Communities" aimed at better aligning the journalism profession with more inclusive democracy. Students explored how their privileges affected reporting, redefined roles of "source" as relational in collaborative work, and worked to build trust with wary citizens to knit communities together in conversation. It promotes a relational journalism, positioning reporters as within community as opposed to apart.

Using the anniversary coverage of Hurricane Katrina, this textual analysis explores how reporters and citizen journalists considered themselves and each other in their different versions of a specific news narrative. This research indicates that online citizen writers undermined the mainstream news story by offering an often contrary version of Hurricane Katrina. Their collective memory focused on personal experience, asserting their right to tell this societal story. By inserting themselves into the news production process of collective memory formation, these citizens renegotiated their relationships with journalists and with journalism. In some cases, this resulted in complete role reversals. The findings suggest that new patterns for information flow are being created, renovating the existing institutional power structure involving the press and society. The conclusion of this article suggests that theorists evaluate citizen journalism alongside mainstream journalists' work, for they are now part of the same news production process.

The author outlines the beginnings of a 'community project' involving a range of statutory, voluntary and community resources, intended to provide a range of better services to clients, and to contribute to the prevention of crime. She draws attention to the importance of involving volunteers, clients and ex-clients.

Civic participation in news production has been a trend under academic scrutiny for at least two decades. The prevalence of digital communication and the dominance of proprietary platforms are two combining forces that disrupt the established journalistic norms. In this article, we investigate news participation and make three grand statements regarding: 1) the holistic definition of participation, 2) the network structure of participation delineating the power dynamics of different media actors, and 3) the transnational context of participation exhibiting the structural constraints within nation-state sovereignty. It is our argument that news participation as a civic act in the digital, globalized age has not fundamentally democratized the information flow as early optimists predicted. Instead, a group of "information elite" have risen to power due to their access to institutional resources, their advantageous positioning in the media ecology, and their entrenchment in the dominant ideology. Participation on proprietary platforms can be easily co-opted to serve the interest of the new information elite.

As journalism's very relevance comes to be increasingly questioned, we focus on how different actors - from Trump to small-town newspaper editors - use their cultural power to define journalism, assess its value, & question what the news should look like. The chapters chronicle how Trump & his allies turned attacks on journalists into a central component of a right-wing populist formula, with journalists positioned as just one more self-interested, out-of-touch elite.
