Our study has confirmed the alpha (R3m) -> beta' (C2/m) ? beta (R (3) over barm) sequence of pressure-induced phase transitions and has allowed us to understand the mechanism of the monoclinic C2/m to rhombohedral R (3) over barm phase transition. The monoclinic C2/m phase enhances its symmetry gradually until a complete transformation to the rhombohedral R (3) over barm structure is attained above 10-12 GPa. The second-order character of this transition is the reason for the discordance in previous measurements. The comparison of Raman measurements and lattice-dynamics calculations has allowed us to tentatively assign most of the Raman-active modes of the three phases. Authors own version of final article on e-print servers ; We have studied the structural behavior of bismuth phosphate under compression. We performed x-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 31.5 GPa and ab initio calculations. Experiments were carried out on different polymorphs: trigonal (phase I) and monoclinic (phases II and III). Phases I and III, at low pressure (P 0.2-0.8 GPa), transform into phase II, which has a monazite-type structure. At room temperature, this polymorph is stable up to 31.5 GPa. Calculations support these findings and predict the occurrence of an additional transition from the monoclinic monazite-type to a tetragonal scheelite-type structure (phase IV). This transition was experimentally found after the simultaneous application of pressure (28 GPa) and temperature (1500 K), suggesting that at room temperature the transition might by hindered by kinetic barriers. Calculations also predict an additional phase transition at 52 GPa, which exceeds the maximum pressure achieved in the experiments. This transition is from phase IV to an orthorhombic barite-type structure (phase V). We also studied the axial and bulk compressibility of BiPO4. Room-temperature pressure-volume equations of state are reported. BiPO4 was found to be more compressible than isomorphic rare-earth phosphates. The discovered phase IV was determined to be the less compressible polymorph of BiPO4. On the other hand, the theoretically predicted phase V has a bulk modulus comparable with that of monazite-type BiPO4. Finally, the isothermal compressibility tensor for the monazite-type structure is reported at 2.4 GPa showing that the direction of maximum compressibility is in the (0 1 0) plane at approximately 15 degrees (21 degrees) to the a axis for the case of our experimental (theoretical) study. In this work we report the metastability and the energetics of the phase transitions of three different polymorphs of BiPO4, namely trigonal (Phase-I, space group P3(1)21), monoclinic monazite-type (Phase-II, space group P2(1)/n) and SbPO4-type monoclinic (Phase-III, space group P2(1)/m) from ambient and non-ambient temperature powder XRD and neutron diffraction studies as well as ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The symmetry ambiguity between P2(1) and P2(1)/m of the high temperature polymorph of BiPO4 has been resolved by a neutron diffraction study. The structure and vibrational properties of these polymorphs of the three polymorphs have also been reported in detail. Total energy calculations have been used to understand the experimentally observed metastable behavior of trigonal and monazite-type BiPO4. Interestingly, all of the three phases were found to coexist after heating a single phasic trigonal BiPO4 to 773 K. In situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements up to 22 GPa were complemented with first-principles theoretical calculations of structural and lattice dynamics properties. Our experiments show that the tetragonal structure of Sr2ZnGe2O7 at ambient conditions transforms reversibly to a monoclinic phase above 12.2 Gpa with similar to 1% volume drop at the phase transition pressure. Density functional calculations indicate the transition pressure at, similar to 13 GPa, which agrees well with the experimental value. The structure of the high-pressure monoclinic phase is closely related to the ambient pressure phase and results from a displacive-type phase transition. Equations of state of both tetragonal and monoclinic phases are reported. Both of the phases show anisotropic compressibility with a larger compressibility in the direction perpendicular to the [ZnGe2O7](2-) sheets than along the sheets. Raman-active phonons of both the tetragonal and monoclinic phases and their pressure dependences were also determined. Tentative assignments of the Raman modes of the tetragonal phase were discussed in the light of lattice dynamics calculations. A possible irreversible second phase transition to a highly disordered or amorphous state is detected in Raman scattering measurements above 21 GPa. ; Research supported by the Spanish government MINECO under Grant Nos. To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/jp512131e ; We report on high-pressure angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction data up to 27 GPa for natural MgAlBO4 sinhalite mineral and ab initio total energy calculations. The experimental bulk modulus of sinhalite is B-0 = 171(3) GPa with a first-pressure derivative of B-0' = 4.2(3). A comparison with other olivine-type compounds shows that the value for B0 is 27% larger than that of Mg2SiO4 forsterite and 29% smaller than that of Al2BeO4 chrysoberyl. These differences are interpreted, on the basis of our ab initio calculations, in terms of the relative incompressibility of Al-O bonds in AlO6 octahedra (with a calculated bulk modulus of 250(1) GPa) as compared to Mg-O bonds in MgO6 octahedra (with a calculated bulk modulus of 130(1) GPa). The spatial cation distribution in the Pbnm orthorhombic unit cell and different polyhedral compressibilities entails a strong anisotropic compression comparable to that of forsterite. The axial compressibilities are 1.06(2) x 10(-3), 2.17(2) x 10(-3), and 1.30(3) x 10(-3) GPa(-1) for a, b, and c axes, respectively. The crystal chemistry of sinhalite under compression is compared to that of other olivine-like compounds. When the initial orthorhombic Pnma Ag2CrO4 structure (phase I) is compressed up to 4.5 GPa, a previously undetected phase (phase II) has been observed with a 0.95% volume collapse. The structure of phase II can be indexed to a similar orthorhombic cell as phase I, and the transition can be considered to be an isostructural transition. This collapse is mainly due to the drastic contraction of the a axis (1.3%). A second phase transition to phase III occurs at 13 GPa to a structure not yet determined. First-principles calculations have been unable to reproduce the isostructural phase transition, but they propose the stabilization of a spinel-type structure at 11 GPa. This phase is not detected in experiments probably because of the presence of kinetic barriers. Experiments and calculations therefore seem to indicate that a new structural and electronic description is required to model the properties of silver chromate. The compression process in the α-phase of europium trimolybdate was revised employing several experimental techniques. X-ray diffraction (using synchrotron and laboratory radiation sources), Raman scattering and photoluminescence experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 21 GPa. In addition, the crystal structure and Raman mode frequencies have been studied by means of first-principles density functional based methods. Results suggest that the compression process of α-Eu2(MoO4)3 can be described by three stages. Below 8 GPa, the α-phase suffers an isotropic contraction of the crystal structure. Between 8 and 12 GPa, the compound undergoes an anisotropic compression due to distortion and rotation of the MoO4 tetrahedra. At pressures above 12 GPa, the amorphization process starts without any previous occurrence of a crystalline-crystalline phase transition in the whole range of pressure. This behavior clearly differs from the process of compression and amorphization in trimolybdates with β′-phase and tritungstates with α-phase. ; We thank Diamond Light Source for access to beamline I15 (EE1746) that contributed to the results presented here. We report on Raman scattering measurements in mercury digallium selenide (HgGa2Se4) up to 25 GPa. We also performed, for the low-pressure defect-chalcopyrite structure, lattice-dynamics ab initio calculations at high pressures which agree with experiments. Measurements evidence that the semiconductor HgGa2Se4 exhibits a pressure-induced phase transition above 19 GPa to a previously undetected structure. This transition is followed by a transformation to a Raman-inactive phase above 23.4 GPa. On downstroke from 25 GPa until 2.5 GPa, a broad Raman spectrum was observed, which has been attributed to a fourth phase, and whose pressure dependence was followed during a second upstroke. Candidate structures for the three phases detected under compression are proposed. Finally, we also report and discuss the decomposition of the sample by laser heating at pressures close to 19 GPa. We report on high-pressure x-ray diffraction measurements up to 17.2 GPa in mercury digallium selenide (HgGa2Se4). The equation of state and the axial compressibilities for the low-pressure tetragonal phase have been determined and compared to related compounds. HgGa2Se4 exhibits a phase transition on upstroke toward a disordered rock-salt structure beyond 17 GPa, while on downstroke it undergoes a phase transition below 2.1 GPa to a phase that could be assigned to a metastable zinc-blende structure with a total cation-vacancy disorder. Angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy evidence that this ordered-vacancy compound with pseudocubic structure undergoes a phase transition (7 GPa) toward a disordered rocksalt structure as observed in many other ordered-vacancy compounds. The equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active modes of this semiconductor have been determined and compared both to ab initio total energy and lattice dynamics calculations and to related compounds. Interestingly, on decreasing pressure, at similar to 2 GPa, CdIn2Se4 transforms into a spinel structure which, according to calculations, is energetically competitive with the initial pseudocubic phase. [EN] We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of layered monoclinic arsenic sulfide crystals (a-As2S3), aka mineral orpiment, under compression. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements performed on orpiment samples at high pressure and combined with ab initio calculations have allowed us to determine the equation of state and the tentative assignment of the symmetry of many Raman-active modes of orpiment. From our results, we conclude that no first-order phase transition occurs up to 25 GPa at room temperature; however, compression leads to an isostructural phase transition above 20 GPa. In fact, the As coordination increases from threefold at room pressure to more than fivefold above 20 GPa. This increase in coordination can be understood as the transformation from a solid with covalent bonding to a solid with metavalent bonding at high pressure, which results in a progressive decrease of the electronic and optical bandgap, an increase of the dielectric tensor components and Born effective charges, and a considerable softening of many high-frequency optical modes with increasing pressure. Moreover, we propose that the formation of metavalent bonding at high pressures may also explain the behavior of other group-15 sesquichalcogenides under compression.
