Abstract
This paper revisits the local leadership of the various inter-related campaigns, agitations and oppositional activities that animated many of the communities of the West Riding textile district during the 1825–40 period. After examining different levels and types of leadership, it explores how people became leaders, the attractions and drawbacks of their role, and the challenges they faced. The study argues that the emergence of a generation of leaders who tapped into and contributed to the cultural wealth of their communities helps to explain the vitality of popular radicalism and the easy replenishment of early Chartist leadership in these localities.

This collection was initially assembled by John Sanders during a period from 1984 to 2007 as working files in the Naval Postgraduate School Public Affairs Office (PAO). They were later transferred to the Dudley Knox Library (DKL) and placed in Special Collections & Archives. This collection consists of documents and photographs of notable NPS faculty, students, alumni and visiting dignitaries. The collection is currently located in Special Collections and Archives in the Dudley Knox Library. ; The NPS Biographical Collection is a growing file that includes records from the early years of the institution to the present. It includes photocopy and original articles, audio and visual media, correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes and newsletters, pamphlets, photographs and negatives, reports, speeches, and technical reports. Notable individuals in the collection are: Fleet Admirals Chester Nimitz and Ernest J. King; federal secretaries James Forrestal, Josephus Daniels, Dan Kimball, Leon Panetta, William Perry, Thomas White and James Roche; Admirals Arleigh Burke, Michael Mullen, James Watkins and Wayne Meyer; NPS astronaut alumni Scott Carpenter, Eugene Cernan, Dan Bursch and Alan Poindexter; Professors John Arquilla, George Haltiner, Richard Hamming, Wayne Hughes, Gordon McCormick, Michael Melich and Russ Stolfi; and dozens of U.S. military admirals and generals

Historical Highlights are provided by the Dudley Knox Library. ; The Dudley Knox Library provides historical highlights for the monthly publication, Update NPS. These "caption stories" blend archival photos and documents into a concise storyline to showcase the origin and evolution of NPS as well as achievements of the institution's leaders, faculy and alumni.

President Daniel T. Oliver, Dr. Jack Borsting, and the Naval Postgraduate School Board of Advisors (BOA) celebrate the group's 40th anniversary with a ceremonial cake on April 17. The board, established in May 1967 by Secretary of the Navy Paul Nitze, held its first meeting September 14-15 that year. In forming the board, Nitze noted, "in the Navy of today, we need.superior technical, analytical and managerials skills." Nitze's goal was to impanel distinguished civilian educators, military officers, business and professional leaders who could advise NPS leadership and the Navy secretary on the effectiveness of the service's advanced education programs.

When grandmasters Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky met for the World Chess Championship at the height of the Cold War in 1972, the two squared off in front of an open game board with 16 chess pieces each. Televised worldwide, the duel subsequently became known as the Match of the Century. But how would this strategy board game play out if many of the knowns became unknowns, including pieces that cannot be seen by the opponent? What if a player has less than 16 pieces and the heavy pieces (kings, rooks, knoghts, bishops) could be placed on any square within the starting rows? What if psychological operations and electronic warfare attacks becme a part of the game? How would strategy change? during the past quarter, students in the Defense Analysis Department course "Militaries and Technological Change" discovered the differences first hand in a team board game that includes invisible pieces and terror-war subtleties of attack and defense, The game: Info Chess.

The significant record of achievement by NPS astronaut alumni is a tribute to their individual talent and the unique, dynamic, and innovative programs at NPS, especially programs in the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Our goal is to educate the next generation of U.S. and international leaders and prepare them for the uncertainties and challenges of a rapidly changing technological world. GSEAS students learn why things work, but also why they don't work, as well as how fundamental scientific and engineering principles can be applied to the integration of U.S. military and defense systems. In the space systems engineering and operations tracks, students design and build satellites to combine classroom discussions with hands-on experience that links theory and operational reality.

Four NPS operations research faculty – three civilian and one military – have been honored for exceptional military operations and national security research and analyses.

Nystagmus is an eye condition which has so far received comparatively little attention. This article discusses the nature and effects of the condition with particular reference to children. It emphasises the need for a wider knowledge of the disease and for further research into treatment and possible cures.
