"Die Entwicklung von Web 2.0-Technologien hat die Möglichkeiten des Selbstausdrucks drastisch vergrößert u.a. mit der Folge, dass persönliche und potenziell kontroverse Fotos öffentlich breit zugänglich sind. In ihrer Studie hat die Autorin sich mit Fotos von Selbstverletzungen beschäftigt, die in Flickr.com eingestellt wurden, einem Portal, über das Fotos und kurze Videos hochgeladen und mit anderen 'geteilt' werden können. Sie interessierte, in welcher Weise Menschen, die solche Fotos veröffentlichen, ihre verletzten Körper darstellen, ob Verweise auf neue diskursive oder visuelle Konventionen findbar sein würden in Richtung einer (Re-)Definition von Selbstverletzung und in welchem Bezug solche möglichen neuen Konventionen zu dominanten kulturellen Diskursen über Selbstverletzung stünden. Hierzu hat sie 516 Fotos von 146 Flickr-Mitgliedern einer visuellen Inhaltsanalyse und Diskursanalyse unterzogen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass dominante Diskurse zu Selbstverletzung insgesamt überwiegen. Zugleich findet sich für einige Nutzer/innen eine eher subversive (Re-) Definition ihrer Verletzungen in einer Art Resilienz-Narrativ, in dessen Rahmen die Wunden als authentische Quelle ihres Selbstausdrucks präsentiert werden." This article is a collaborative autoethnographic reflection about two dance-based research projects. Our objectives for the projects were two-fold: to practice knowledge production and mobilization in a way that diverged from dominant traditional Western scholarship, and to re-examine our engagement with the self-injury focus of previous research. With our collaborative meaning making came new dilemmas and unanticipated relationship development. Through dance and collaborative writing, we discovered a vulnerability that could cast doubt on dominant knowledge practices. As a relational praxis, two stories converged to facilitate critically reflexive perspectives and less dominant ways of knowing directed toward social justice.

Images featuring self-injury (SI) have been proliferating on social media. This article reports the findings of a visual narrative analysis of 294 photo-based posts on Tumblr, exploring how SI is narrated through the interplay between image content, photographic composition, associated texts and tags, and reblogging. Findings reveal a shift in the iconography of SI from direct depictions of self-injured bodies to re-appropriations of popular media content that figuratively represent emotional struggles. Images of self-inflicted wounds received 10 times less reblogs than images without wounds, and media memes conveying hopeless moods were the most widely distributed. These memes represent SI as a form of life struggle virtually anyone can face while complicating conventional readings of SI as an individual pathologic experience. We discuss these findings in the context of an emergent online curation culture and how Tumblr's unique affordances may both offer and limit possibilities for narrating SI.

In this article, we undertake a reflective narrative inquiry into the GimpGirl Community (GGC), an online group of women with disabilities. We explore 12 years of GGC activity through community archives and auto-biographic narratives of GGC organizers, to understand how these women actively created a safe and open space for like-minded individuals, how community members used diverse online technologies for community building and social interaction, and how these online tools allow some members to experiment with their notions of self and identity outside dominant discourses. Our analysis of the lived experiences of GGC members reveals how they challenge the boundary between 'abled' and 'disabled,' and enact agency beyond their marginalization as women and as individuals with disabilities.
