"Systems of Classification in Premodern Medical Cultures puts historical illness concepts in cross-cultural perspective, investigating perceptions, constructions and experiences of health and illness from antiquity to the 17th century.

Focusing on the systematisation and classification of illness in its multiple forms, manifestations and causes, this volume examines case studies ranging from popular concepts illness through to specialist discourses on it. Using philological, historical and anthropological approaches, the contributions cover perspectives across time from East Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, spanning ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome to Tibet and China. They aim to capture the multiplicity of illness concepts and medical traditions within specific societies, and to investigate the historical dynamics of stability and change linked to such concepts.

Providing useful material for comparative research, the volume is a key resource for researchers studying the cultural conceptualisation of illness, including anthropologists, historians, and classicists, amongst others."

Franz Köchers standard work on Babylonian and Assyrian medicine, which was designed to provide copies of the texts with translation and commentary, had remained unfinished at his death in 2002. Six volumes of transcriptions with short introductory comments and quotes of parallels and duplicates were available. The publication of the series is now continued with Robert Biggs and Marten Stol as new publishers. The new volumes contain complete translations and philological commentary, making current Babylonian-Assyrian medical texts accessible to medical historians. - Franz Köchers Standardwerk zur Babylonischen und Assyrischen Medizin, das darauf angelegt war, Kopien der Texte mit Übersetzung und Kommentar vorzulegen, war bei seinem Tod 2002 unvollendet geblieben. Sechs Bände Umschriften mit jeweils kurzen einführenden Kommentaren und Zitaten von Parallelen und Duplikaten lagen vor. Die Publikation der Reihe wird nun mit Robert Biggs und Marten Stol als neuen Herausgebern fortgesetzt. Die neuen Bände enthalten vollständige Übersetzungen und philologische Kommentare und machen damit in aktuellen Untersuchungen die Babylonisch-Assyrischen Medizintexte für Medizinhistoriker zugänglich.

AbstractWas wussten die babylonischen Heilkundigen über die Anatomie und Physiologie des menschlichen Körpers? In diesem Beitrag analysiert die Autorin altmesopotamische Schriftquellen für medizinisches Körperwissen und diskutiert die praktisch-empirischen Grundlagen antiker Körperkonzepte, die maßgeblich auf der heilkundlichen Praxis, auf leiblichen Erfahrungen sowie auf Analogien zur Tieranatomie und zu Prozessen in der Lebensumwelt basieren. Ein Schwerpunkt der Studie liegt auf den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Körperkonzepten, Krankheitstheorien und Heilungsstrategien im Spannungsfeld physiologischer, umweltbezogener und numinoser Krankheitsursachen. Zudem werden innovative Entwicklungen in den heilkundlichen Keilschrifttexten des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr. thematisiert, wobei die Astro-Medizin und die Herausbildung physiologischer Modelle (Vier-Organ-System) sowie der Vergleich mit ähnlichen Systematisierungen medizinischen Wissens in China und Griechenland im Mittelpunkt stehen.

This contribution investigates the phraseology of descriptions of efficacy (efficacy phrases) in Mesopotamian medical texts, concentrating on the qualification latku 'tested, tried, proven', which implies that knowledge of effective drugs and remedies had been acquired through practical experience and repeated trials. The occurrence of latku-qualifications in different types or formats of medical manuscripts and in recipes that are duplicated in one or more historical periods will be analyzed, so as to raise questions regarding the role that 'tested' remedies played in the formation and transmission of Mesopotamian medical compendia. I also look at information about drug testing from outside the medical corpus, as for instance in several letters from Old Babylonian Mari, the role of efficacy labels from a cross-cultural perspective and the use of efficacy labels in connection with colophons. The paper concludes with a discussion of the relatively high frequency with which extract tablets make use of 'tested' remedies and the categorical role of the label in designating certain sections of medical compendia.
